If a Steam download is stuck, slow, or failing—or a game update will not finish—start by checking the Download Manager, restarting Steam, and confirming the destination drive has space. Then choose a targeted fix: clear the download cache for stalled downloads, repair the library folder when Steam cannot write files, verify one affected game’s files, or try another nearby download region when content servers appear slow or unavailable.
First, identify what is stopping the download or update
Open Steam’s Download Manager and check whether the game is actively transferring, paused, queued, or waiting for a scheduled update. Note the exact error message; different errors point to different causes. Steam lets you pause or reorder downloads, set bandwidth limits, and schedule updates. Check that a bandwidth limit or schedule is not preventing the download from running, and confirm the destination drive has enough free space. See Steam’s guide to managing downloads and updates.
- Restart Steam, then restart your computer if the problem persists. Steam lists restarting as an initial step for installation and update errors; see Steam’s Update & Installation Issues guide.
- If only one game is affected, start with that game’s files rather than changing client-wide settings.
- If several downloads fail or will not start, try clearing the download cache.
- If Steam reports a write or disk-related problem, repair the library folder and check storage.
Steam download is stuck or will not start: clear the download cache
In the Steam client, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, then confirm. Menu wording can vary by operating system or client version. Steam says clearing the cache can help when games will not download or start. It does not remove installed games, but you will need to log in to Steam again afterward. Follow Steam’s download-cache instructions.
Steam update will not finish: repair the library folder
If Steam cannot write game files, updates may fail even when the game is already installed. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the library’s more-options menu, and choose Repair Folder. This repair targets the selected library folder and its write-permission trouble; it is not a general fix for slow network transfers. One game is failing: verify its installed files
For a single game that will not update, start from that game’s Library page and open Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam checks the installed files and can replace damaged or missing content. The check may take several minutes.
Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification normally because local configuration files should not be replaced. Run only one verification at a time, and avoid doing it while the computer is under heavy disk or processor load. See Steam’s file-verification guide.

Steam download is slow or reports a server error: try another region
A content server serving your selected download region can be slow, overloaded, or temporarily faulty. In Steam, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and select a different region that is still relatively close to you. Retry the download and test one region at a time; switch back if the alternative performs worse. Steam recommends changing regions for slow downloads, and for the “No Steam content servers…” error it advises choosing the closest region—or the next closest if the current one is already selected. Steam download speed looks too low: check the units first
Steam may display download rates in bytes per second, while internet plans commonly advertise speeds in bits per second. One byte equals eight bits, so the figures are not directly comparable: for example, a rate shown in megabytes per second must be multiplied by eight to compare it with megabits per second. Also check Steam’s display setting and remember that a local network properties panel may show the speed of the connection between your device and router, not the speed of your internet plan. If the rate still seems unexpectedly low after checking the units, test a nearby download region and review whether firewall, antivirus, or other filtering software could be affecting network traffic.
If basic fixes fail: check the network, security software, and drive
Steam identifies network hardware, firewalls, antivirus, and other software that monitors or modifies network or disk activity as possible sources of interference. Restarting modem or router hardware and checking operating-system or network drivers may help narrow down a connection issue. Avoid broadly disabling security protections as a routine fix; advanced firewall or security changes should be handled carefully, with specialist help if needed. Use another drive only when storage may be the cause
If the original drive is nearly full or appears to have storage-related problems, testing an installation on another hard drive can help isolate the issue. An external SSD can be an option if you need additional library space, but it is not a remedy for a content-server outage, a slow internet connection, or a Steam cache problem. Steam lists reinstalling its client to the same location as a possible remedy for damaged client or service files, and says this can preserve installed games when done that way. However, Steam also warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. Do not treat an ordinary uninstall and reinstall as a risk-free step: follow Steam’s current instructions and protect game data before removing anything.
