If Spotify downloads won’t play offline, first check whether the content finished downloading on this device. Then confirm your account and device meet Spotify’s download rules, check Offline Mode and available storage, and restart or update the app. Save reinstalling for last: it removes your downloads, so you’ll need to download them again.
1. Check whether the download actually finished
When you can get online, open the album, playlist, or podcast you want to hear and check its download status. Spotify distinguishes a completed-download symbol from an item that is still downloading or updating for offline listening. If it has not finished, reconnect and let the download complete before testing offline playback.
Make sure the content is downloaded on the device you’re using; a download on another device does not establish that this device has a local copy. Spotify says individual songs cannot be downloaded directly. On mobile and desktop, add a song to a playlist and download that playlist instead. See Spotify’s Listen offline guidance.
2. Confirm your account and device are eligible
Spotify’s official guidance, checked on October 4, 2026, says Premium accounts can download albums, playlists, and podcasts; free accounts can download podcasts. Spotify also requires the app to go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads. Its stated limit is up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices. If downloads exceed the device limit, Spotify says it removes them from the least recently used device. Check Spotify’s download rules if content has disappeared or stopped being available offline.

3. Check Offline Mode and the app’s state
Spotify says downloads normally play automatically when internet access is lost. Offline Mode is optional: it restricts playback to downloaded content, so items that are not downloaded appear unavailable. On mobile or tablet, find the setting at Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. For desktop, use Spotify’s platform-specific Mac or Windows instructions rather than looking for the mobile menu; see Spotify is offline.
If the item is confirmed downloaded but still will not play, restart Spotify and check for an app update. These reversible steps are preferable to removing the app while you are still diagnosing the problem. 4. Check free space, cache, and cleanup apps
Spotify recommends at least 1GB of free device memory. Its storage can contain both downloaded content and cache, so a nearly full device can interfere with downloads. Review the app’s Storage setting and, if appropriate, clear Spotify’s cache. Clearing cache is not the same as deleting and reinstalling Spotify.
Temporarily turn off cache-clearing or battery-saving apps while troubleshooting; Spotify lists these among possible causes of download problems. On Android, if you store downloads on an external SD card, check that the card is present and accessible. Spotify allows an accessible card to be selected as the download location and identifies a faulty SD card as one possible reason downloads disappear. 5. Determine whether this is a connection problem
If the download is incomplete or Spotify needs to refresh its status, the device must connect to the internet. Try opening another app or webpage. If those fail too, check Wi-Fi or mobile data, the router, network restrictions, or a firewall. Spotify’s offline troubleshooting covers connection checks, and its internet and data usage guidance explains the app’s connection context.
If other apps work and the Spotify item is already fully downloaded, focus on Spotify or the device rather than treating it as a general internet outage. A network upgrade is not a sensible first fix for a confirmed local-playback problem.

6. Escalate without losing downloads unnecessarily
If the preceding checks do not help, Spotify recommends checking that the device operating system is up to date, closing unused apps, and testing Spotify on another device or in the web player. If Spotify fails only on one device, the comparison can help isolate a device-specific issue. Check available memory and, on desktop, whether a firewall is interfering. For further device troubleshooting, Spotify notes that the device manufacturer may need to help.
Reinstall Spotify only after simpler checks. Reinstalling removes downloaded music and podcasts; you must download them again afterward. Follow the instructions for your platform in Spotify’s reinstall guide.
