Start by checking that your PC meets the game’s requirements, then verify its files and test reversible changes one at a time. For Sonic X Shadow Generations, SEGA’s guidance covers common PC troubleshooting, but no single step is a guaranteed fix: the right next move depends on whether the game crashes at launch, stutters during play, or slows down under system load.
1. Pin down when the problem happens
Before changing settings, note whether the game crashes before it opens, freezes in a particular scene, or starts having FPS drops after a settings change or mod installation. Record the exact error message and whether only the game closes, the display driver resets, or the whole PC restarts. Also note whether the issue occurs in both Sonic and Shadow sections.
Keep your PC details handy: Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, graphics driver version, and whether you play through Steam or Epic. These details help separate a launch compatibility issue from resource pressure or a software conflict. 2. Check the published PC requirements
Steam lists the following baseline and recommended specifications. They are storefront targets, not a guarantee of identical performance on every PC.

These requirements come from the Steam store listing. If your PC falls below a listed minimum, or its processor lacks AVX or its graphics adapter lacks D3D10 compatibility, settings changes may not resolve a launch failure. Identify the unmet requirement before considering hardware changes, and check whether your particular device can be upgraded.
3. Verify the game installation and update Windows and graphics drivers
Missing or corrupted installation files can affect performance, so SEGA recommends file verification as an initial check. Use the game client’s built-in verification option for your Steam or Epic installation. Then check Windows Update and your GPU manufacturer’s driver channel for available updates. 4. Reduce graphics load and check for overrides
If the game launches but stutters, lags, or drops frames, change one setting at a time and compare the same scene where possible. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.
- Lower detail and shadow settings.
- Reduce the resolution; higher resolutions use more VRAM.
- Try windowed mode to see whether it changes the behavior.
- Check whether NVIDIA or AMD graphics software is automatically applying settings over the game. SEGA’s FAQ points NVIDIA users to the automatic-optimization setting and advises checking game-specific Radeon features in AMD Adrenalin.
SEGA notes that graphics settings may be downgraded during loading to avoid out-of-memory crashes. That behavior reflects memory limits; it does not by itself identify the cause of every freeze or FPS drop. SEGA PC Performance FAQ

5. Test without mods and conflicting background software
Disable mods and retry the same activity. If the problem stops, add mods back individually to identify a possible conflict. SEGA’s general troubleshooting guidance says to remove mods and related files, not just unsubscribe from Workshop items. Follow the relevant support instructions carefully before removing files.
Close background applications you suspect may be interfering, then test again. SEGA’s FAQ names Razer Cortex as an example of software that has caused issues with SEGA titles in the past; that is not evidence that it causes problems with this game on your PC. 6. Check memory, VRAM, power, and heat
Look for low available system memory
Open Task Manager while reproducing a stutter and check available memory. SEGA says that less than 1 GB of free system memory with the game and other applications running may lead to paging and repeated stutters. Close unnecessary applications and test again before deciding that hardware needs replacing. SEGA PC Performance FAQ
Consider graphics memory and resolution
Higher resolutions use more VRAM. If stuttering or crashes coincide with demanding graphics settings, lower resolution and detail to see whether the symptom changes. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that the GPU is the only cause.

For laptops, test on mains power
Connect the laptop to mains power and use the manufacturer’s performance or cooling options when running a demanding game. If temperatures seem abnormal, improve ventilation or seek professional help rather than opening the laptop without the required experience.
Separate loading time from gameplay performance
SEGA recommends installing on an SSD or M.2 drive to reduce loading times. It presents this as a loading-time option, not as a stated fix for crashes, stuttering, or low frame rates. SEGA PC Performance FAQ
7. Try permissions or reset settings cautiously
If the game or launcher appears unable to access files or complete a normal operation, SEGA suggests trying both the game client or launcher and the game executable with administrator permissions. Use this as a test rather than a default change to every program.
SEGA’s FAQ also suggests deleting the game’s settings file to reset configuration. Such a file may be named config, graphics, or preferences and may be in AppData. Before changing or deleting anything, locate the specific file and make a backup so you can restore your existing settings. SEGA PC Performance FAQ

SEGA says a clean reinstall may help after other steps fail, but deleting game-related files can also delete saves. Back up saves before removing files. If following SEGA’s instructions, moving the relevant folder to a safe location is less destructive than deleting it outright; then reinstall through your game client. SEGA PC Performance FAQ
