Strong Wi-Fi bars show that your device detects a strong wireless signal; they do not prove that your internet connection is fast. To find the cause, compare repeatable speed tests across devices and locations, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet before changing settings or buying equipment.

Start with repeatable speed tests

Run a speed test more than once, noting the time, location, device, and whether it is connected over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Repeat tests in different parts of the home and at different times: a single result may reflect temporary variation rather than a persistent fault. Ofcom recommends repeated testing, and Microsoft recommends checking different locations and recording results before and after changes.

Keep the test conditions as consistent as practical when comparing results. If you change router placement, disconnect devices, or alter a setting, change one thing at a time and test again. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.

Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers checking network conditions and locations. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance recommends repeated checks; its advice is consumer guidance for the UK, not a guarantee of a particular service speed.

Check whether the problem follows one device

Test another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi, in the same location and close together in time. If one device is slow while another performs normally, concentrate on the affected device before replacing the router.

  • Check whether apps or downloads are using bandwidth in the background.
  • Confirm that the device’s Wi-Fi adapter supports the band and capabilities used by the router.
  • Update the device’s operating system and Wi-Fi adapter software through the manufacturer’s normal update process.

Microsoft’s guidance for slow Wi-Fi on Windows also suggests trying another device and checking background activity and supported bands. The exact menus and available adapter features vary by device.

Compare Wi-Fi with an Ethernet connection

When possible, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and run the same test. Use the router or internet provider’s instructions if you need to test at the modem instead; connecting directly may not work with every service or equipment setup.

What the comparison shows What to investigate next
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are both slow Check the modem, router path, service status, and internet provider. A Wi-Fi signal indicator does not rule out a broadband or equipment problem.
Ethernet is performing normally, but Wi-Fi is slow Focus on wireless conditions, router placement and settings, or the affected client device.

TP-Link’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide describes this wired-versus-wireless diagnostic split and recommends checking the connection through the modem. It dates from 2018 and uses TP-Link examples, so use your own router and internet provider’s instructions for exact steps. Ofcom also recommends using Ethernet where practical.

If Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, test wireless conditions

Make one change at a time, then repeat the speed test in the same place. A strong displayed signal can coexist with slow performance when the wireless environment, client device, or network settings limit the connection.

Try a more open router position

Place the router in an open, central position where practical, rather than hidden behind objects or surrounded by barriers. Test the affected device again from the same location. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance explains that physical surroundings can affect Wi-Fi performance.

TP-Link Deco XE75 AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E System, 3-Pack
  • WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
  • Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
  • True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential

Check bands, interference, and congestion

Confirm that the router and client device can use a compatible Wi-Fi band. Nearby wireless networks may compete for channel capacity, and other sources of interference or physical barriers may affect performance. If the slowdown happens mainly in one room, compare results near the router and in that room.

Google’s guidance on interference and placement applies specifically to Nest Wifi and Google Wifi; it is useful for those products, not a universal settings guide. For other routers, follow the manufacturer’s documentation.

Review channel settings cautiously

Router channel or channel-width settings may matter in a congested environment, but the right options depend on the router, region, and connected devices. Check the manufacturer’s directions before changing them, and record the original setting so you can restore it if performance worsens. Do not assume a menu path or setting from another brand applies to your equipment.

Check household traffic and equipment state

Ask whether other people or devices are using bandwidth-heavy services during the slow test. As a temporary diagnostic, pause downloads or disconnect unused devices and test again. If performance improves, the issue may be related to network load rather than signal strength.

Restart the router and modem according to your internet provider’s or equipment maker’s instructions. Check for firmware updates using the manufacturer’s normal update path; avoid interrupting an update once it has started. Ofcom includes checking network use and rebooting equipment in its troubleshooting advice, while Microsoft recommends checking firmware and background applications.

Choose the next step from the pattern you observe

  • Ethernet is slow too: Contact your internet provider with the test results and ask about service or line issues. If you tested through the router rather than at the modem, follow the provider’s instructions for any further isolation test.
  • Only one device is slow: Seek support for that device or its Wi-Fi adapter, and check its background activity and compatibility.
  • Wi-Fi is slow only in a distant room: Test router placement and coverage first. Consider a mesh system or extender only if the evidence points to a coverage limitation and the equipment is compatible with your setup.
  • The slowdown varies with household activity: Repeat the test when other network use is paused, then compare the results with normal busy periods.

Ofcom warns that boosters can affect speed, and coverage hardware cannot fix a slow broadband service. Buy an extender or mesh node only when the tests indicate a coverage problem. If you need to make a wired comparison or suspect a damaged Ethernet lead, use a working cable supported by the router and computer; TP-Link suggests Cat 6 or better in its guide, but a new cable is not a universal remedy for slow Wi-Fi.
