If Wi-Fi is faster near your router than through a range extender, first compare both connections on the same device, from the same location, with other heavy internet activity paused. If the extender is the slower connection, check its link back to the router and move it closer until that link improves—while keeping it close enough to cover the weak-signal area. A stronger signal bar on your device does not prove the extender itself has a strong connection to the router.
1. Check whether the extender is actually the problem
- Pause downloads, streaming, backups, and other high-bandwidth activity where practical.
- Using one client device, run an internet speed test while connected to the extender.
- Connect that same device to the router’s Wi-Fi and repeat the test from the same location under similar conditions. Make sure you know which network the device joined.
TP-Link recommends comparing the extender and router connections this way in its slow-speed troubleshooting guide. If speed is poor through both, investigate the internet connection or router before blaming the extender. If only one client is slow, the issue may be specific to that device; the comparison narrows the possibilities but does not identify a cause by itself.
TP-Link also suggests checking the Wi-Fi link speed with the client 2–3 meters from the extender, if you know how to view that measurement on your device. Link speed describes the local wireless connection; it is not the same as the internet throughput measured by a speed test.
2. Check the extender’s connection to the router
An extender can provide a strong signal to a nearby phone or laptop while receiving a weak signal from the router. Check the extender’s signal light or status interface, then consult the manual for your exact model: indicators and their meanings vary.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For the models covered by its working-status guide, TP-Link says a solid signal LED indicates a successful connection to the router; some models show signal strength separately with a color or bars. A poor-signal indication is a reason to try moving the extender closer. Do not assume a particular color means the same thing on every model or brand.
3. Reposition the extender and reduce interference
Start with a location roughly halfway between the router and the area with weak coverage, but adjust toward the router if the extender’s upstream signal is poor. TP-Link recommends this starting point in its placement guidance; it must still be within usable router range. NETGEAR also recommends a midpoint that remains within router coverage, especially when thick walls obstruct the path, in its extender placement advice.

Test a few nearby positions rather than treating halfway as an exact measurement. Keep the extender around router height; TP-Link’s article suggests roughly four feet for the models and conditions it discusses. Where the extender has external antennas, keep them vertical. Try to avoid thick walls, masonry, cabinets, large metal or reflective objects, and sources of interference such as microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators, and baby monitors. These are practical placement recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every home.
4. Make sure your device is connected to the extender
If the router and extender use similar or identical Wi-Fi names, it may be unclear which one your device is using during a test. TP-Link recommends giving the extender a different Wi-Fi name in its slow-speed troubleshooting instructions. A distinct name helps identify the connection; changing the name alone does not increase speed.

5. Use a wired access point if the wireless link cannot be made stable
If distance or obstacles prevent a reliable router-to-extender wireless connection, a wired access point arrangement may be an option. TP-Link’s placement guidance says: “If a stable wireless connection is not possible due to obstacles or distance, use Access Point (AP) mode with an Ethernet cable running from the router to the extender.” Put the extender near the area that needs coverage, connect it to the router by Ethernet, and configure AP mode if your model supports it. Check the device manual for compatible modes and exact setup steps. This approach requires a cable run and does not guarantee a particular speed.
6. Avoid daisy-chaining extenders
NETGEAR cautions that a connection can become sluggish when traffic has to pass from one extender to another before reaching the router. Its daisy-chain guidance recommends one hop from each extender to the main router or access point.

When to contact support
If the extender remains slow after comparable tests and placement changes, contact its manufacturer with your speed-test results. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends sharing the network topology and the router and client-device models when seeking help. Include the extender model and describe which network each test used; those details help support distinguish a weak backhaul link from a broader connection or device issue.
