To fix slow Wi-Fi after upgrading your router, first determine whether the slowdown is coming from your internet service, the router’s wired connection, or Wi-Fi itself. Compare speeds directly from the modem, through the router by Ethernet, and over Wi-Fi near the router. That sequence can identify the problem before you change settings or replace equipment.
1. Find out whether the slowdown is upstream of the router
Use a computer to run a speed test while connected directly to the modem, following your internet provider’s instructions for connecting safely and restoring your router afterward. Record download and upload results. The FCC consumer guide explains that speed tests measure both speeds in Mbps and advises contacting your provider when results are slower than expected.

Compare the result with what you expect from your service and, if possible, repeat the test under similar conditions. If the direct-to-modem connection is already slow, the router is not the only likely cause: investigate the modem, the service, or an outage with your provider. TP-Link also recommends testing through the modem before attributing a slowdown to the router (TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide).
2. Compare the router’s wired and Wi-Fi connections
If the modem test is healthy, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and test again. Then test Wi-Fi on that same device close to the router, with as few obstacles as possible. Run the tests under similar conditions so the comparison is meaningful.

| What you observe | Where to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Slow speed directly from the modem | Internet service or modem | Repeat the test as your provider directs, then ask about service or outage conditions. |
| Modem speed is good, but a wired device through the router is slow | Router state, setup, or modem-to-router Ethernet link | Restart the modem and router; inspect or swap the link cable. |
| Wired speed through the router is good, but nearby Wi-Fi is slow | Wireless settings, interference, or device capability | Check the Wi-Fi band and client capability, then consult your router’s model-specific guidance. |
| Wi-Fi is slow mostly in distant rooms | Router location, barriers, or mesh coverage | Improve router placement and check whether any mesh point has a good connection to the router. |
3. If the wired router connection is slow, check the Ethernet link
Restart the modem and router, then retest the wired connection. Check the Ethernet cable between them for a loose connection or damage. If you have a suitable spare, swapping it is a useful diagnostic; TP-Link specifies Cat6 or better for this check in its router troubleshooting steps. A new cable is relevant only if the existing wired link is the problem—it does not generally boost Wi-Fi by itself.
4. If only Wi-Fi is slow, test close to the router
Stand near the router and test with the same device that showed the slowdown. A nearby test reduces the effect of distance and walls, helping distinguish a whole-network problem from a coverage problem. Wi-Fi results can vary with distance, building materials, interference, frequency band, and the wireless capabilities of the device. Google’s guidance for troubleshooting slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi identifies these as factors to consider.

If one device is slow while another performs well in the same spot, check the slower device’s Wi-Fi capability and software or network settings before changing the router. If all devices are slow near the router but Ethernet is fine, focus on wireless conditions and router-specific settings.
5. Improve router or mesh placement
Place the router in an open, central location rather than on the floor, inside a cabinet, or in a closet. Retest in the rooms where you need coverage; a better central position can improve the path between the router and devices.

For a wireless mesh point or extender, avoid placing it in the dead zone it is meant to fix. Google Fiber advises positioning the mesh device about halfway between the router and the area needing coverage, while checking that the device still has a good connection to the router. See Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi speed guidance. Placement advice does not mean every coverage problem requires another device; first test whether moving the equipment improves results.
6. Change Wi-Fi settings only after confirming a wireless-specific issue
When Ethernet works well but Wi-Fi remains slow near the router, review the settings for your exact router model. TP-Link lists wireless channel and channel-width choices, Quality of Service (QoS), and parental controls among checks that may affect performance (TP-Link’s guide). The appropriate settings depend on the model and the local wireless environment, so use the manufacturer’s documentation rather than applying a universal channel or width recommendation.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Retest and contact your provider if needed
After repositioning equipment, changing a setting, or restarting the network, test again under the same conditions as before. Keep the modem, wired-router, and nearby Wi-Fi results separate; they point to different parts of the connection. If the direct-to-modem result remains below expectations, contact your internet provider about service or outages. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends restarting the network and checking mesh placement before escalating.
