If Wi-Fi slowed down after you changed a router setting, first compare it with a wired connection and then undo or test one change at a time. That helps distinguish a Wi-Fi radio issue from a modem, ISP, or individual-device problem—without making more changes that obscure the cause.
Find out whether the slowdown is Wi-Fi-only
Run a speed test on the affected device, then repeat it on another device if possible. Keep each device in the same place for its own repeated tests and use the same test method. If you can, compare those results with a device connected to the router by Ethernet.
- Wi-Fi is slow, Ethernet is normal: Focus on wireless settings, signal conditions, and the affected device.
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet are both slow: A Wi-Fi radio setting alone is unlikely to explain it. If your setup allows, connect a computer directly to the modem and test again. TP-Link says that if the result is still slow at the modem, the modem or ISP may be responsible; it also recommends restarting the modem before the router. TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting steps explain that comparison.
- Only one device is slow: Check that device’s Wi-Fi capability, operating-system or driver state, and adapter settings before changing router-wide options.
For the wired comparison, use a known-good Ethernet cable. If you suspect the existing cable, TP-Link recommends trying another and specifies Cat6 or better for this check. A cable helps diagnose a wired path; it does not improve Wi-Fi when the wired connection already tests normally.
Undo the recent change, or isolate it safely
If you remember the setting you changed and its earlier value, restore that value and run the same comparison again. If you do not know the previous value, record the current configuration before testing. Change only one setting at a time, then repeat the test from the same device and location. Changing several options together makes it difficult to tell which one mattered.

Router interfaces and safe settings vary by model. Use the manual or manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact router rather than relying on a menu path or value intended for a different model.
Check channel and channel width
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime. If your router offers automatic channel selection, use it as a baseline. If it does not, Apple advises choosing the channel that performs best in the local environment. Test a change from the same spot and compare repeated results rather than assuming a particular channel is best everywhere.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Channel width is also environment-dependent; maximizing it is not a universal fix. TP-Link’s slow-internet guidance suggests trying 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz and 80 or 160 MHz on 5 GHz. Apple recommends 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz to help avoid reliability or performance problems around competing networks and 2.4 GHz devices. These are different recommendations for different troubleshooting contexts, not a single setting that suits every router and location. If your router exposes width controls, compare supported narrower and wider options and keep the one that performs reliably in your environment.

Verify the band, radio mode, and signal at the test location
A faster band helps only when both the router and the client device support it and the signal reaches the place where you use the device. Microsoft notes that 6 GHz requires a Wi-Fi 6E-capable router and client. An older adapter may not support the selected band or channel width. Check the device specifications as well as the router’s settings before selecting a band or mode.
Test once near the router with few obstructions, then again in your normal location. If performance is good nearby but poor where you usually connect, the difference points toward signal reach or obstructions rather than a speed-test inconsistency. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and your home layout guidance covers congestion, device compatibility, and 6 GHz requirements.

Rule out QoS and parental-control limits
Quality of Service (QoS) and parental controls can prioritize, limit, or schedule traffic. If one of these settings may apply to the affected device or service, temporarily disable it as a diagnostic and repeat the test. Then restore the intended policy and test again. TP-Link lists QoS and parental controls among the settings to check when speeds are slow; its troubleshooting guide provides the model-specific context.

A factory reset is a last resort, not a quick way to reverse one setting. It clears router settings, so you will need to set the router up again. ASUS describes reset guidance in its router reset instructions. Before resetting, make sure you have what you need to restore your network configuration; if your router is ISP-supplied or locked down, contact the ISP for the right support path.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step from the test results
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: Continue with channel, width, band or radio mode, placement, and traffic-control checks.
- Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi are slow, including a direct modem test: Contact your ISP or investigate the modem and WAN connection rather than spending more time tuning Wi-Fi channels.
- Only one client is slow: Check its supported bands and modes, driver or operating-system state, and adapter settings. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide covers Windows-side checks.
