First find out whether the problem affects one device, one room, or the whole home. Compare a speed test near the router with one in the problem area, then check other devices and—if possible—test over Ethernet. That pattern helps distinguish weak Wi-Fi coverage from a device issue or a problem with the modem, internet service, or plan.

Diagnose where the problem is

Wi-Fi performance depends on distance, walls and other barriers, frequency band, the device’s capabilities, and how busy the network is. A slow result in one room may point to local coverage or a weak mesh connection. Slow results across devices and locations make an issue with the incoming connection, modem, or ISP more plausible. Google describes these factors in its slow-internet troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Compare devices. Check whether one device or several are affected. An older device or one with different Wi-Fi capabilities may perform worse than newer devices, so one slow client alone does not establish that the router or ISP is at fault.
  2. Compare locations. Test near the router, then in the room where the problem occurs. If the result improves near the router, investigate coverage and placement.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection, if feasible. A wired test can help separate a wireless coverage problem from an issue affecting the incoming service. Use the same device and test method where possible.
  4. Note the test conditions. Record the time, result, test method, and whether other devices are streaming or downloading. A speed test is evidence, not a promise of what every app will deliver. Google’s test measures what the router or primary Wi-Fi point can send to and receive from Google’s servers; network congestion can affect the result, especially at busy times. See Google’s explanation of its speed test.

Improve coverage and router placement

Before changing settings or buying equipment, try a placement check. Put the router in an open, central location rather than inside a cabinet or behind large obstacles. Walls, floors, concrete, brick, metal, mirrors, appliances, and furniture can weaken or block wireless signals. Google’s placement guidance explains how to position Wi-Fi devices.

  • Move the affected device closer to the router or nearest Wi-Fi point and compare performance.
  • If you use mesh Wi-Fi, check the connection between points with the system’s mesh test, if available. A device can have a strong connection to a nearby point even when that point has a weak link back to the main router.
  • Move a weakly connected mesh point closer to its upstream point, then test again. Google provides a mesh test guide with advice on connection quality and point placement.

Check interference and Wi-Fi settings

Nearby networks can compete for wireless airtime, and some electronics or building materials can interfere with or weaken a signal. Make one change at a time and retest so you can tell whether it helped. Google’s wireless interference guidance discusses competing networks, channels, electronics, and extenders.

  • Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
  • Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
  1. Use automatic channel selection if your router supports it. If performance remains poor, a manual channel change can be tested against the original result; the best choice depends on the conditions in your home.
  2. Move a nearby electronic device that could be interfering, or temporarily turn it off if practical, then retest.
  3. For routers with band-specific settings, Apple recommends Auto channel selection where available. Its router settings guidance says 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz can help avoid performance and reliability problems near other networks and 2.4 GHz devices; for 5 GHz and 6 GHz, it recommends Auto or all widths. Router controls differ, so follow the maker’s documentation.
  4. If a modem/router and a separate router are both configured to route the home network, check the setup before changing it. Apple warns that a network should have only one DHCP server; multiple enabled servers can cause address conflicts.

Restart the equipment and check the ISP connection

Restarting can resolve some connection problems, but it does not identify or fix every cause. Follow the modem and router maker’s or ISP’s restart instructions, and allow the equipment time to reconnect. If the modem and router are separate, make sure you know which device you are restarting. Google notes that restarting a modem can fix some internet connection problems and occasionally improve slow connections in its troubleshooting guidance.

If multiple devices remain slow in multiple locations, check your ISP’s service status and compare measured speeds with your subscribed plan. The FCC Consumer Guide: Broadband Speed recommends contacting the ISP about unexpectedly low speeds or possible disruptions. A new router cannot make the incoming internet service faster than the connection allows.

When to consider coverage hardware

Consider new equipment only after tests point to a persistent coverage problem rather than a slow incoming service. Neither a mesh system nor an extender repairs an ISP outage or increases the speed delivered to your home.

Option Problem it may suit Placement and limitations
Mesh Wi-Fi system Several rooms with weak coverage, or a larger home where additional points can extend coverage. Points need strong links to one another; a weak wireless link can become a speed bottleneck. Check whether Ethernet backhaul is possible and whether the system has the ports, bands, and controls you need.
Wi-Fi range extender A localized dead zone where there is still a usable signal at the extender’s proposed location. It rebroadcasts the router’s signal, so placing it where the signal is already unusable will not solve the underlying coverage gap. It does not fix low ISP service.

Before choosing either option, check compatibility with your ISP and modem/router setup, the Wi-Fi generations and bands supported by your devices, wired backhaul and port needs, app requirements, roaming behavior, guest or parental controls, and firmware support. A router replacement may be appropriate if the current router lacks needed capabilities or cannot meet the home’s coverage needs after placement and configuration have been checked. Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7 by itself does not guarantee faster real-world internet: the router, client device, radio conditions, and ISP service all matter.
