A Selenium button that fails in headless mode usually needs a diagnosis, not a special click command. Start with the exception: check whether the button is found in the right page context, is visible and enabled, is unobstructed at its center, and is ready after the page’s asynchronous updates. Then wait for the application state that should follow the click. For Chrome, also verify the headless argument and that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions.
1. Record the failure before changing the test
Capture the exception text and the details needed to reproduce it: Selenium version and language binding, browser and driver versions, operating system or container, headless arguments, locator, and whether the same test works in headed mode. A headed-versus-headless comparison can narrow the investigation, but it does not prove that headless mode is the cause.
Do not begin by adding a long fixed sleep or forcing a JavaScript click. Those can hide the actual problem: an outdated locator, a page still updating, an overlay, or a browser configuration issue.
2. Check Chrome headless options and version compatibility
For Chrome, configure headless mode through Chrome options. Selenium’s Chrome documentation lists --headless=new as a commonly used argument and says Chrome and ChromeDriver must match at the major-version level.

Selenium’s January 2023 post, “Headless is Going Away!”, describes a migration in the Selenium convenience API: the headless convenience method was deprecated in Selenium 4.8.0 and removed in 4.10.0. The post is historical version guidance, not a current compatibility table. Check the documentation for your Selenium binding and browser release when updating an existing test.

3. Wait for the state the next action needs
A navigation wait for document readiness does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content, a single-page application update, or a control’s enabled state is ready. Selenium’s wait guidance recommends synchronizing on the condition the next step actually needs, instead of relying on a fixed delay.
For example, wait for the button to be clickable, click it, and then wait for a meaningful result. Adapt both selectors and the success condition to the application:

)The example uses a ten-second timeout; choose a limit appropriate to the application and test environment. After the click, the right condition might instead be a URL change, a dialog appearing, a selected state, or another application-specific signal. Do not mix implicit and explicit waits in the same session: Selenium warns that doing so can make timeout durations unpredictable.
4. Confirm Selenium is targeting the intended button
A locator can find an element that exists but is not the visible, enabled control a person would use. Confirm that it uniquely matches the intended button and that the driver is in the correct window, frame, or shadow-root context. If a page rerender, navigation, or context change replaced the node, locate it again rather than reusing its old reference.

Selenium distinguishes missing, stale, intercepted, and non-interactable elements because they point to different failure modes. Its error troubleshooting guide is useful for matching the reported exception to the next check.
5. Check whether another element blocks the click
Selenium’s element-click command scrolls the target into view and clicks its center. If an overlay covers that point, the click can be intercepted even when the button is visible on the page. Inspect for a sticky header, modal, consent banner, loading layer, popup, or animation; Selenium lists overlapping UI and animations among causes of interaction failures.
- Wait for a modal, loading layer, or animation to disappear before clicking.
- If a sticky element covers the target, adjust the page position or wait for the obstruction to move.
- Use a clickability wait as a useful check, while remembering it cannot guarantee that a later overlay will not appear.
- Prefer resolving the obstruction so the test performs a normal user-like interaction.
A JavaScript-triggered click can bypass normal pointer hit-testing. Use one only when the application specifically requires it and the test’s purpose allows it; it can make a test pass without proving that a real user could click the control.

6. Match the exception to the first useful check

7. Troubleshoot the failure in a repeatable order
- Read the exception. Use its type and message to choose a branch in the table rather than retrying blindly.
- Verify the target. Check the locator, uniqueness, current page or frame, and whether the element remains attached after updates.
- Verify interactability. Check visibility, enabled state, viewport position, and whether an overlay or animation blocks the center.
- Synchronize on the right condition. Wait for the element state needed before clicking and an application-specific result afterward.
- Verify the environment. Confirm the browser options and browser-driver compatibility; compare headed and headless behavior as a diagnostic.
