On a computer, Chrome does not use a separate search box. Web searches are performed from the combined address bar—also called the omnibox—at the top of the window. If that bar is missing, Chrome is usually in a display mode that hides its controls, such as full screen or kiosk mode. If the bar is visible but the expected search provider is missing, the problem is with Chrome’s search-engine settings instead.
First, check whether Chrome is hiding its controls
Before changing settings, move the pointer to the top of the screen and press F11 on Windows or Linux. On a Mac, try Control + Command + F. These shortcuts toggle full-screen mode in many desktop configurations.
If Chrome is running as a kiosk or application-managed window, the address bar may be intentionally unavailable. This is common on public computers, shared terminals, and some work or school devices. You may not be able to restore it without exiting that mode or contacting the administrator.
Close and reopen Chrome normally after leaving full screen. The address bar should appear below the tab strip. Click it, type a search, and press Enter.

If the address bar is visible but the search engine is wrong or missing
This is a search-provider problem, not a missing-bar problem. Chrome uses the address bar for both website addresses and searches.
- Open Chrome and select More ⋮ in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Search engine.
- Under Search engine, select Change.
- Choose Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, or another available provider.
Test the change by clicking the address bar, entering a phrase such as Chrome search test, and pressing Enter.
Add a search engine that is not listed
If the provider you want is absent, Chrome lets you add it manually.
- Go to More ⋮ → Settings → Search engine.
- Select Manage search engines and site search.
- In the Site search section, select Add.
- Complete the three fields shown in the table.
- Select Add.
- Find the new entry, select More ⋮ beside it, and choose Make default.

Reset Chrome settings
Reset Chrome if the search engine keeps changing, an extension has altered search behavior, or Chrome’s interface is behaving unexpectedly.

- Select More ⋮ → Settings.
- Select Reset settings.
- Choose Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings to confirm.
This resets the default search engine, homepage and startup settings, new-tab settings, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. It does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords. It is also not a complete removal of every Chrome preference; for example, some font and accessibility settings remain.
Chrome may also reset settings automatically when it detects that an installed program changed them improperly.
Check extensions and unwanted software
An extension or installed program can replace your search provider or repeatedly change it back. If the setting will not stay selected:

- Open More ⋮ → Extensions → Manage extensions.
- Disable extensions you do not recognize, especially search, shopping, coupon, or new-tab extensions.
- Restart Chrome and test the address bar.
- Remove the extension if the problem disappears.
Unexpected search-engine changes can be a symptom of unwanted software or malware. Remove recently installed programs you do not trust and run your operating system’s security scan. Do not install a random “Chrome repair” utility or command-line fix; Google’s documented recovery options are changing the search settings, resetting Chrome, or reinstalling it.
Reinstall Chrome if Settings will not open
If the More menu is missing, or selecting Settings does nothing, Google’s supported recovery path is to reinstall Chrome.

- Uninstall Chrome using your operating system’s normal app-removal process.
- Download Chrome again from google.com/chrome.
- Install it and sign in again if you use Chrome Sync.
Save any important local profile data first if Chrome Sync is not enabled. Bookmarks and passwords stored only on that computer may not be recoverable after removing the profile.
When a work or school administrator controls search
Chrome can show Managed by your organization when policies control the browser. An administrator may set the default search engine, prevent changes, or manage the available search engines. In that situation, the controlled entry may not be removable or changeable from Chrome’s settings.

Fix a missing address bar on Android
On Android, the address bar can be moved between the top and bottom of the screen, so it may appear to be missing when it has simply been repositioned.
- Open Chrome and select More ⋮.
- Go to Settings → Address bar.
- Select Top or Bottom.
You can also touch and hold the address bar, then select Move address bar to the bottom or Move address bar to the top.

To change the Android search provider, open More ⋮ → Settings. Under Basics, select Search engine, then choose a provider. Recently visited search engines may appear in the list.

Fix the search provider on iPhone or iPad
- Open Chrome and select More ⋯.
- Select Settings.
- Tap Search engine.
- Select the provider you want to use.
Recently visited search engines may be added to the available choices. The iPhone and iPad versions do not use the same desktop address-bar layout, so desktop instructions for restoring a toolbar do not apply.
If a search-choice screen is blank or unresponsive
When Chrome displays a search-provider selection screen but its button cannot be clicked, update your antivirus software and restart Chrome. Google also lists browser or device zoom as a possible cause when a confirmation button is not visible. Reset the page or system zoom and restart the browser.
Some Chrome address-bar features, including AI Mode and “Ask Google about this page,” are gradually released and may not be available for every account or region. They are features accessed from the address bar, not separate search bars.

How do I get the Google search bar back in Chrome?
If you mean the desktop browser control, exit full-screen or kiosk mode; Chrome does not provide a separate toolbar search box. If the address bar is visible but uses another provider, go to More ⋮ → Settings → Search engine → Change and select Google.
Why does Chrome keep changing my search engine?
An extension, unwanted software, or an organization policy may be controlling the setting. Disable unfamiliar extensions, reset Chrome settings, and check whether Chrome says Managed by your organization.
Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks and passwords?
No. Google’s settings reset does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords. It does reset items such as the search engine, homepage, extensions, themes, cookies, and site settings.
Can I move Chrome’s address bar on Android?
Yes. Open More ⋮ → Settings → Address bar, then choose Top or Bottom. You can also touch and hold the address bar and choose its new position.

On desktop, restore the missing Chrome search control by restoring the browser window—not by looking for a separate search-bar setting. Exit full-screen or kiosk mode first. If the address bar is present, fix the provider under Settings → Search engine; add a missing provider through Manage search engines and site search. Reset Chrome when an extension or unwanted program keeps changing the setting, and reinstall Chrome if Settings itself will not open.
