If a screenshot shows a blank or incomplete page, make sure your capture runs in a JavaScript-enabled browser, then wait for the specific content you need—not just the first page-load event—before capturing. In Puppeteer, enable JavaScript before navigation and wait for a real page-ready marker such as a visible selector.
Why a JavaScript website screenshot can be blank
A website can return its initial HTML before its JavaScript application has rendered the content you expect. A screenshot taken at that point records the early state, not the finished page. The capture must use a browser automation engine that executes JavaScript, and it must wait until the relevant content is present.
Other causes include JavaScript being disabled, content appearing only after an interaction or scroll, or the missing content living in an iframe. Treat these as separate problems: first verify the browser and script settings, then wait for the content in its actual location.
Fix the capture sequence in Puppeteer
Use a meaningful readiness condition tied to the target site. The example below assumes the page sets data-page-ready="true" on an element once the content is ready; replace that selector with a marker that actually exists on your target page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setJavaScriptEnabled(true);
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Set JavaScript before navigating. Puppeteer documents that a JavaScript setting change takes full effect on the next navigation; if you change it after the page has loaded, reload or navigate again before capturing. For a reusable script, define url and import Puppeteer in the surrounding program, and handle errors so the browser closes if navigation or a wait fails.
Choose a wait condition that proves readiness
- Best when available: wait for a stable selector to become visible, expected text to appear, or a known application state to become true.
- Useful for custom state: Puppeteer’s
waitForFunctioncan wait for a page-specific condition. - Diagnostic fallback: a fixed delay can help determine whether content simply appears late, but it is fragile. It may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one.
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' followed by Page.screenshot() (Puppeteer screenshot guide). That is an example, not a universal readiness test. Playwright lists commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle as navigation signals, but explicitly discourages using networkidle as a general testing readiness criterion; its guidance is to rely on web assertions instead (Playwright Page API). Sites with polling, analytics, streaming, or other ongoing requests may not become idle, while a quiet network does not prove that the particular content you need is visible.

Handle iframes, lazy content, and interactions
Content inside an iframe
A selector in the main document does not prove that frame content has loaded. Identify the frame containing the target, wait for that frame to appear, and wait for the required element or state inside it before taking the screenshot. Puppeteer documents frame waits and page-condition waits in its Page API.
Content loaded by scrolling or interaction
If a site loads images or sections only after scrolling, clicking, or another user action, reproduce that trigger before capturing. Then wait for the expected content to appear. There is no universal lazy-loading action: the target page’s behavior determines what must happen.

Make screenshots repeatable
For visual comparisons, keep the rendering environment consistent: use the same browser version, operating system, headless or headful mode, and relevant rendering settings as the reference capture. These factors can change how a page looks. Playwright discusses this in its visual comparisons guidance.
Also keep the viewport and any other capture settings stable between runs. If screenshots differ unexpectedly, first check whether the environment or the page state changed before altering the wait logic.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot is blank or shows only a shell | The capture happened before the application rendered, or JavaScript is disabled. | Use a JavaScript-enabled browser; in Puppeteer call page.setJavaScriptEnabled(true) before navigation. Wait for a visible page-specific marker. |
| The wait for network idle times out | Ongoing requests may prevent network silence. | Replace network-idle dependence with a selector, expected text, or page-specific condition that signals the target content is ready. |
| The screenshot succeeds but a section is missing | The content may be inside an iframe, appear after scrolling, or require interaction. | Find the correct frame or reproduce the required trigger, then wait for the missing content itself. |
| A fixed delay works sometimes but not always | Rendering time varies between runs. | Prefer an observable readiness condition. If none is available, choose a timeout appropriate to the site and treat it as a fallback rather than proof of readiness. |
| Two captures look different despite similar code | Browser, operating system, headless mode, or rendering settings may differ; the page itself may also be in a different state. | Align the capture environment with the baseline and verify the same content-ready condition is met. |
Check the installed Puppeteer version’s current API documentation before relying on exact method signatures; the example is an illustrative pattern, not a guarantee for every version or site.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
