Compare the camera preview with the saved photo, then view that same file in another app or on another display if possible. The cause points to a different fix: improve the lighting or camera settings for a genuinely dark image, or adjust display settings if only the screen looks dim.
Check whether the photo or the screen is dark
Compare the image in three places: the camera preview before you take the picture, the saved file in Gallery, and—if available—the same file in another viewer or on another screen. If it looks dark everywhere, the image may be underexposed. If it looks different only in one viewing situation, check the display brightness and related screen settings before changing camera settings. This comparison is a practical way to narrow down the cause, not a Samsung-prescribed diagnostic test.
Samsung distinguishes underexposure from display brightness. Its support guidance says, “An underexposed photo will appear dark and fuzzy or spotty, whereas overexposure will cause it to look bright and washed out.” Samsung’s photo and video quality troubleshooting guide covers exposure and other camera symptoms.
If the saved photo is genuinely underexposed
Lighting, camera settings, shooting distance, and environmental conditions can all affect photo quality, according to Samsung. A bright light aimed directly at the camera can also create a scene with both overexposed and underexposed areas. Try taking another photo with more indirect light and compare the result.

- Move to a brighter location or change your angle so a strong light source is not shining into the camera.
- For low-light scenes, try Night mode if your Galaxy model and software version offer it. Samsung says Night mode can combine 30 images into one photo; the exact operation may vary by model and software.
- Compare the new photo with the original in the same viewer. If the new image is brighter, the scene or capture conditions likely contributed to the darkness.
To check for Night mode, open Camera > More > Night, if that option appears on your device. Samsung notes that availability varies by model and software version. Samsung’s Night mode guidance describes the feature.
If the camera preview is dark before capture
A dark preview does not necessarily mean the saved image will be equally dark. Take a test photo and compare the saved result before adjusting advanced controls.

Samsung identifies advanced controls in Good Lock’s Camera Assistant as a possible reason for a dark preview. If Camera Assistant is available in your country and you use its Advanced Photo mode controls, Samsung’s troubleshooting steps are to open Camera settings, go to Camera Assistant, open Advanced Photo mode controls, and set Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None. These are conditional, advanced settings—not a universal fix. Camera Assistant is available only in countries that support Good Lock. See Samsung’s troubleshooting steps.
If the screen dims while taking or viewing photos
For Galaxy S26 series phones, Samsung says the camera screen may dim because of Dim strobing, Adaptive brightness, or Extra dim. Check those controls and raise the screen brightness under Settings > Display if needed. The cited instructions are specific to Galaxy S26; menu names and availability can differ on other models and software versions. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 screen-dimming guide explains these checks. Samsung also describes Adaptive brightness as adjusting screen brightness according to surrounding light in its display guidance.

Some scene-aware camera behavior can change how a particular image looks without indicating a general post-save problem. For example, Samsung says that when the camera recognizes the moon, it may darken the background so the moon appears clearer. That example applies to moon photography; it does not establish that Galaxy phones generally darken saved photos. See Samsung’s explanation of moon photography.
Distinguish darkness from spots, glare, or flickering
A photo that is uniformly too dark calls for checking exposure and viewing conditions. Other visible problems have different likely causes:

- Dark or colored spots: Dirt on the lens can cause marks. Turn off the phone and gently wipe the lens with a soft, dry or microfiber cloth. Avoid pressing hard, and do not use liquids or cleaning solutions. Samsung’s camera-lens care instructions address this symptom.
- Glare or light streaks: A dirty lens or high zoom can make these more noticeable. Clean the lens carefully, change the shooting angle, or avoid pointing the camera at a strong light source, as described in Samsung’s photo-quality troubleshooting guide.
- Dark horizontal bands or flicker indoors: Indoor lighting can cause flicker because of lighting frequency. Samsung suggests adjusting shutter speed in Pro mode; the available controls vary by device. This is a different issue from an evenly underexposed photo. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
What to do if the problem continues
Make a note of the exact Galaxy model and One UI version, and observe whether the preview, saved file, or only one display looks dark. Also note whether the issue happens in ordinary light, only in low light, or alongside spots, glare, or flickering bands. Those details help distinguish exposure, display, and camera-setting problems when seeking model-specific support.
