A Galaxy phone may use more battery than usual just after setup while apps and services are being optimized. Samsung says this can be temporary, but it does not give a universal number of days for battery use to settle. If the drain continues, check which apps and features are using power before changing settings broadly.
1. Allow setup activity to finish
Installing apps, syncing data, and optimizing apps and services can increase battery use when a Galaxy phone is first configured. Give those tasks time to complete. If the phone continues to drain quickly afterward, investigate other causes rather than assuming setup is still responsible. Samsung describes the effect in its UK battery-drain guidance and Saudi Arabia guidance for new phones.
2. Find what is using the battery
Check the battery-usage screen before restricting apps. Menu names vary by Galaxy model and software version; look in Settings for Battery or Battery and device care, then open battery usage. Review apps and features with unusually high use, including their background activity. Display use and connectivity can also affect consumption. Samsung’s battery-drain guidance recommends checking usage so you can target the likely cause.
3. Update apps and phone software
Check for available device software and app updates. Samsung recommends keeping the phone and related apps current as part of troubleshooting a new Galaxy’s battery drain. The precise update menus vary by model and software version; follow the instructions for your device in Samsung’s new-phone guidance.

4. Run the built-in optimization
On supported software versions, open Settings > Battery and device care and tap Optimize now. Samsung says this can close background apps and manage abnormal battery use. If your menu differs, search Settings for “Optimize” or consult support for your model. Menu labels and availability can vary by software version.
5. Limit background activity selectively
For apps that do not need to run in the background, look under Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Samsung lists categories such as unused apps, sleeping apps, deep sleeping apps, and never sleeping apps, though labels may differ.
- Consider sleep restrictions for apps that do not need frequent background activity.
- Avoid deep-sleeping apps that need timely messages, alerts, or syncing.
- Remember that restricting background work can limit some app functions or delay notifications and updates.

6. Check whether signal conditions are contributing
Weak or unstable mobile signal can increase battery use. If drain is worse in a particular location, compare it with use where reception is stronger. Samsung also discusses reducing 5G use in weak 5G areas, but the available network controls depend on your Galaxy model, carrier, and software. 7. Check battery status if the problem persists
If the phone still drains unusually after you have checked usage, updates, optimization, background limits, and signal conditions, check battery status and contact Samsung support for your region. Samsung Australia recommends using Samsung Members > Phone Diagnostics to check battery status. That specific diagnostic guidance is for Australian products; the exact path and service options may differ elsewhere.
