If your RuneScape: Dragonwilds world will not load, a character save is inaccessible, or the game crashes, first identify which problem you have: Jagex reported a specific launch-window save-corruption incident tied mainly to editing character appearance, while other crashes and save issues have different triggers. Jagex announced a planned replacement for affected corrupted character saves, but its September 29, 2026 update did not confirm that the replacement had shipped or explain how players can trigger it.
First identify the type of save or crash problem
The messages “Unable to load world!” and “crashes to desktop when trying to load in” describe symptoms, not a diagnosis. Jagex’s updates discuss several distinct issues:
| Issue | Trigger and affected data | What Jagex said about status |
|---|---|---|
| Launch-window corruption | During the launch window, disconnecting, putting a console into sleep mode, or similar circumstances could leave saves unreadable or inaccessible. Jagex identified editing character appearance as the main culprit. Around a thousand players across consoles and PC Game Pass were affected, according to Jagex’s September 29, 2026 update. | Jagex said Edit Appearance had been disabled and a preventative fix rolled out. It also announced a planned replacement character for corrupted character saves, targeting update 1.0.1 in mid-October 2026; the post did not confirm release. |
| Modded dedicated-server save issue | Jagex’s September 23, 2026 notes for version 1.0.0.5 describe player-save corruption when console players joined a modded dedicated server. | The notes identify the issue but do not establish a released fix for it. |
| General gameplay or loading crash | Crashes during gameplay, loading crashes to desktop, or a crash after choosing Play Online while offline are not necessarily the appearance-editing corruption incident. | Jagex’s December 16, 2025 troubleshooting post gave general crash steps and said loading crashes were under investigation at that time. Its September 2026 patch notes separately said the offline Play Online crash was being targeted for 1.0.1. |
Jagex’s September 23, 2026 notes also said investigation of world and character save corruption and possible restoration methods was ongoing, and that removing the Edit Appearance button would mitigate the issue. They noted that restoring some saves had reset Custom or Creative worlds to Normal. That earlier account is distinct from the September 29 update’s later description of a planned replacement character.
For the appearance-editing incident, the official update signed Mod Doom says, “The main culprit of this was editing your character’s appearance.” The figure of around a thousand affected players is Jagex’s approximate count, not an independently measured estimate. See Jagex’s September 29, 2026 update and the September 23, 2026 version 1.0.0.5 notes.

What to do if your character save became inaccessible
Jagex said it planned to clean corrupted character saves and install a replacement character into the world the player had progressed in. The update said names, appearances, and private-chest access would be unaffected, and replacement characters would be pre-levelled and supplied with vital equipment. The stated target was update 1.0.1 in mid-October 2026. At the time of that post, this was a future target, not confirmation of a shipped fix.
The announced replacement character levels were:
| Skill | Announced level |
|---|---|
| Attack | 60 |
| Ranged | 60 |
| Magic | 60 |
| Agility | 55 |
| Artisan | 61 |
| Construction | 85 |
| Cooking | 50 |
| Farming | 59 |
| Fishing | 50 |
| Mining | 72 |
| Runecrafting | 50 |
| Woodcutting | 47 |
These are the levels Jagex announced for its replacement character, not a general repair outcome for every corrupted save. The update gives no account-specific instructions for triggering or checking the replacement, and it does not establish whether all affected platforms receive it on the same schedule. Do not treat local file edits, hardware purchases, or ordinary crash fixes as a way to restore this incident’s corrupted character data.

Try the dated general crash troubleshooting steps
For crashes during gameplay, Jagex’s December 16, 2025 known-issues post recommends these steps. They are general troubleshooting guidance from that date; they are not a promised fix for the later appearance-editing incident.
- Remove all mods. Test the game without mods enabled.
- Update graphics drivers. Install a current driver for your graphics hardware, then retry.
- Verify Steam game files. In Steam, open the game’s properties and use its installed-files option to verify file integrity.
- Test a new world and character. Check whether the crash persists with both, which can help distinguish a general game problem from an issue tied to a particular save.
Jagex’s 2025 post also acknowledged crashes to desktop while loading and said it was investigating then. That dated notice does not establish whether the issue remains present or has since been fixed. The same post asks players whose crashes persist to send their log, world saves, and character saves. See Jagex’s December 16, 2025 Fellhollow known-issues post.
Collect Windows files for a support report
Jagex’s listed paths apply to Windows. Take the log immediately after a crash, while the game is not running. Include both the .sav and .verbackup versions of world saves when sending the files requested by support.
| File type | Windows location |
|---|---|
| Log | %localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedLogsRSDragonwilds.log |
| World saves | %localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedSaveGames |
| Character saves | %localappdata%RSDragonwildsSavedSaveCharacter |
To open a folder, paste its path into File Explorer’s address bar. Copy the requested files for a support report rather than altering them in an attempt to repair corruption. A Windows player can also store a separate manual copy of accessible save files on removable storage, but that is only a way to keep a copy; Jagex does not say that a flash drive repairs or reverses this corruption. These Windows paths and file instructions do not provide a console recovery procedure.

Keep the incident reports separate
- Appearance-editing corruption: Jagex’s September 29, 2026 update reported the launch-window incident across consoles and PC Game Pass, said the feature had been disabled and a preventative fix rolled out, and described a replacement-character plan.
- Modded-server corruption: The September 23, 2026 version 1.0.0.5 notes describe corruption affecting console players joining modded dedicated servers. Those notes do not say this was the same incident.
- Offline Play Online crash: The same patch notes describe a crash when selecting Play Online without an internet connection and say it was being targeted for 1.0.1.
- Other crashes: The December 16, 2025 known-issues post gives general PC troubleshooting and documents Windows file locations. It predates the later incident and should not be read as a fix announcement for it.
Jagex’s September 29 update is the latest dated official account included here. Its 1.0.1 timing is a target stated in that post, not proof that the update shipped or met that schedule.
