Crashes, freezes, and launch failures can have different causes; a fix that helps one title or GPU may not help another.
1. Check the exact game’s compatibility and notes
Search the RPCS3 Compatibility List for the title. If relevant, match the region or game ID as well: entries and advice can be specific to a particular release. Read the current status and follow any linked wiki or forum notes for known launch, freeze, or gameplay issues.
RPCS3 defines Playable as a game that “can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” Other statuses indicate limitations or failure to initialize. Compatibility information changes frequently, so use the entry as it appears now rather than relying on an old status or compatibility count. The category describes the game’s reported state, not the odds that it will crash on your particular computer.
2. Verify the firmware and game setup
Check that RPCS3 has the official PS3 firmware installed and that the game was added from a legitimate game dump. Follow the project’s current setup guides for the relevant steps. An incomplete or incorrect baseline setup can prevent a game from starting, so confirm it before experimenting with advanced options.

For initial testing, use the standard resolution scale of 100%. The RPCS3 guide recommends starting there and increasing the scale gradually; avoid adding resolution scaling while diagnosing a crash or freeze.
3. Check the renderer and GPU driver
Confirm that your GPU supports the renderer selected in RPCS3, then check the project’s Graphics Driver Issues page for documented problems affecting your GPU or driver. Renderer support and driver defects depend on the specific hardware and software combination, so do not apply a workaround meant for a different GPU as if it were universal.

If you recently changed the renderer or graphics driver, test whether the failure follows that change. Change one factor at a time and retry the same game and reproducible action; changing several settings together makes it harder to identify what helped.
4. Isolate title-specific settings
Look up the affected game in the RPCS3 Wiki FAQ and its linked game page before changing options. A setting recommended for one title may be unnecessary or harmful for another.

When you need to test an option, use a per-game custom configuration if appropriate. That keeps the experiment limited to the affected title instead of changing behavior for every game. Compare the game with its default settings and with the single targeted change, then retain the change only if it addresses the symptom.
5. Match the symptom to the evidence
Use the following comparisons to narrow the problem; none proves a cause without testing on your own setup:

- Compatibility: Does the exact game entry document the same launch failure, freeze, or glitch?
- Graphics: Does the issue appear only with a particular renderer or after a GPU-driver change?
- Configuration: Does it reproduce with default settings, or only with a per-game option enabled?
- Log: Does RPCS3.log contain information that points toward setup, graphics support, or a title-specific failure?
6. Prepare a useful support report
If the official guidance does not resolve the problem, gather enough detail for others to reproduce and diagnose it. The RPCS3 FAQ asks issue reporters for system details—including OS, CPU, and GPU—and the RPCS3.log file.
- Operating system, CPU, and GPU
- Exact game title and title ID, plus region when relevant
- RPCS3 build and selected renderer
- What you were doing when the failure occurred and the steps that reproduce it
- The full RPCS3.log file
Include the log rather than only a description such as “it crashes”; the log and exact reproduction steps give helpers concrete evidence to assess.
