Right-click failures in Windows 11 do not all have the same cause. A mouse with a worn button, an incorrect primary-button setting, a touchpad gesture problem, a frozen explorer.exe process, or a third-party shell extension can produce similar symptoms.

Start by determining whether the failure affects the input device, the context menu itself, or File Explorer. The tests below move from quick, reversible checks to Windows repairs that take more time.

First, identify the exact failure

Check which description matches your problem:

Symptom Likely area to investigate
The physical right button does nothing anywhere Mouse hardware, connection, button assignment, or driver
Right-click works with another mouse The original mouse, receiver, cable, battery, or its software
Right-click works in some programs but not File Explorer explorer.exe or a third-party shell extension
The menu opens but commands appear to be missing Windows 11’s compact context menu
The menu opens slowly, or Explorer freezes or crashes A shell extension or damaged Windows component
Only two-finger tapping or touchpad corner pressing fails Touchpad settings, gestures, or driver

1. Test the mouse and its connection

Wired USB mouse

  1. Unplug the mouse and wait a few seconds.
  2. Connect it directly to a different USB port. Bypass a USB hub or docking station for this test.
  3. Inspect the cable and right button for damage. Clean visible dirt around the button.
  4. Test the mouse on another computer.

If the right button fails on another computer too, the mouse is probably defective and replacing it is more productive than changing Windows settings.

Wireless mouse

  1. Replace or recharge the batteries.
  2. Turn the mouse off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
  3. For a USB receiver, unplug it, wait about 10 seconds, and reconnect it to another USB port.
  4. For a Bluetooth mouse, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and remove and pair the mouse again if necessary.

Keep a Bluetooth mouse close to the PC while testing. Low battery, distance, radio interference, and some unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interrupt wireless input.

  • This mouse is built by Logitech-the mouse experts; it comes with the quality and design we've built into more than a billion mice, more than any other manufacturer

2. Check the primary mouse-button setting

Windows may be using the right button as the primary button, making the physical buttons appear reversed.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
  2. Expand Primary mouse button.
  3. Select Left for the normal arrangement.

When Right is selected, the physical right button performs the primary-click action and the physical left button performs the secondary-click action. In that situation, the right button may not be broken; the buttons have been intentionally swapped.

3. Use the keyboard to test the context menu

Select a file, folder, desktop icon, or another item, then press:

Shift+F10

This is Windows’ keyboard equivalent of a right-click. Some keyboards also have a dedicated menu key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If Shift+F10 opens a menu but the mouse does not, focus on the mouse, touchpad, button assignment, connection, or input driver.
  • If Shift+F10 also fails in File Explorer, investigate Explorer, shell extensions, Windows components, or the user profile.
  • If the menu opens but has fewer commands than expected, continue to the next section before attempting repairs.

4. Check “Show more options” before repairing anything

Windows 11 uses a redesigned, compact context menu. Older commands and many legacy application integrations are placed in a second menu rather than removed.

Right-click an item and select Show more options. You can also select the item and press Shift+F10 to open the traditional menu.

Archive utilities, older graphics programs, PDF tools, and some cloud-storage applications may add commands only to the expanded menu. A short first menu is therefore normal Windows 11 behavior, not evidence that right-click is broken.

A registry command often suggested for restoring the old menu by default is:

reg.exe add "HKCUSoftwareClassesCLSID{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}InprocServer32" /f /ve

This changes how the menu is displayed. It does not fix a failed mouse, a touchpad, an Explorer crash, or corrupt Windows files, so it should not be the first troubleshooting step.

Amazon Basics 3-Button USB Wired Mouse with Responsive Tracking, Plug & Play, Compatible with Windows and Mac, Black
  • Computer mouse for easily navigating a computer interface; click, scroll, and more

  • High-definition (1000 dpi) optical tracking ensures responsive cursor control for precise tracking and easy text selection
  • 3 buttons offer effortless fingertip control

5. Test the touchpad gestures

On a laptop, try both documented right-click methods:

  • Tap the touchpad with two fingers.
  • Press the lower-right corner of the touchpad.

Review the relevant options at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Gesture availability varies by hardware, and some features require a Precision Touchpad.

If the touchpad itself is unresponsive or gestures are missing, check its driver. In Device Manager, touchpads may appear under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.

6. Restart Windows Explorer

If right-click fails on the desktop, taskbar, or in File Explorer, the Explorer shell may be stuck.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Find Windows Explorer in the processes list.
  3. Select it and choose Restart.

The desktop and taskbar may disappear briefly while Explorer reloads. Test right-click again afterward.

If Windows Explorer is missing or immediately crashes:

  1. In Task Manager, select Run new task.
  2. Enter explorer.exe.
  3. Select OK.

Restarting Explorer is only a temporary reload. If it hangs again whenever you right-click, a shell extension is a stronger suspect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Isolate third-party Explorer shell extensions

Context-menu extensions load inside the Explorer process. A faulty extension can make right-click slow, freeze File Explorer, or crash it. Common sources include cloud-storage clients, archive tools, PDF software, graphics programs, and security products.

Microsoft’s Sysinternals Autoruns can help identify them:

Logitech M185 Compact Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Swift Grey

  • Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
  1. Download and run Autoruns as administrator.
  2. Choose Options > Hide Signed Microsoft Entries.
  3. Inspect Explorer-related entries, concentrating on non-Microsoft shell extensions.
  4. Clear an entry’s checkbox to disable it. Do not delete it during the initial test.
  5. Restart Windows Explorer and test right-click.
  6. Re-enable extensions in small groups until the problem returns.

The last extension or group enabled before the failure returns is the likely conflict. Update or uninstall that program, or leave its Explorer integration disabled if the program supports that choice.

8. Update or reinstall the mouse or touchpad driver

Use Windows Update

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates and restart the PC.

Windows Update may not offer a driver for every mouse or touchpad. For a laptop or manufacturer-specific device, check the PC or device manufacturer’s support page for the model-specific driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Device Manager

  1. Search for and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices. For a touchpad, also check Human Interface Devices.
  3. Right-click the relevant device.
  4. Select Update driver. If updating does not help, select Uninstall device.
  5. Restart Windows. It will attempt to reinstall the device driver.

Do not uninstall an unknown device at random. If you are working on a laptop and removing the touchpad driver would leave you without a pointing device, have a keyboard or external mouse available.

9. Install updates and restart

Pending Windows updates can affect Explorer, input drivers, and shell components. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what is offered, and use Start > Power > Restart.

A full restart is preferable to assuming that closing the laptop lid or signing out has applied every pending update.

10. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use these tools when the problem affects multiple accounts or Windows features, or when Explorer continues failing after driver and shell-extension checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for the operation to complete successfully. Then run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until SFC reaches Verification 100% complete. DISM repairs the component store that SFC may need, which is why the order matters.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, an administrator can provide a valid repair source:

11. Use Safe Mode as a diagnostic test

Safe Mode loads Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If right-click works there but fails during normal startup, a startup application, nonessential service, driver, or shell extension is more likely than a physical mouse fault.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. After the restart, select the Safe Mode option.

Restart normally to leave Safe Mode. If Windows keeps starting in Safe Mode, press Windows+R, enter msconfig, open the Boot tab, clear Safe boot, and restart.

12. Perform a clean boot

A clean boot starts Windows normally but disables non-Microsoft services and startup applications. It is useful when Safe Mode works but you need to identify the conflicting program.

  1. Search for and open msconfig or System Configuration.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. Select Hide all Microsoft services.
  4. Select Disable all, then Apply.
  5. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
  6. In Startup apps, disable each enabled startup item.
  7. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.

If right-click works, re-enable services and startup apps in small groups to locate the conflict. Restore normal startup afterward: open System Configuration, select Normal Startup on the General tab, then re-enable the services and startup applications you disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a work-managed PC, policies may prevent a clean boot, and disabling managed services can remove important functionality. Ask your IT department before changing these settings.

13. Test another Windows user profile

When right-click fails in only one account, the user profile may be damaged.

  1. Create a new local Windows user account and make it an administrator for testing.
  2. Sign in to that account.
  3. Test right-click in File Explorer and on the desktop.

If it works in the new account, copy personal files from the old profile to the new one. Applications may need to be configured or installed again, and Microsoft Store apps may require another sign-in. If the problem affects every account, a profile is not the likely cause.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.

This reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet. The option may be absent on older installations or on computers whose organization controls Windows Update.

15. Reset Windows only as a last resort

Before resetting, back up important files and make sure you can access your BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.

Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. The choices mean:

Option What it does
Keep my files Preserves personal files but removes installed applications and resets settings.
Remove everything Removes personal files, applications, and settings.
Cloud download Downloads a fresh Windows copy.
Local reinstall Uses Windows installation files already stored on the PC.

Keep my files does not preserve installed programs or settings. Use Reset PC only after checking the hardware, Explorer, extensions, drivers, system files, Safe Mode, and user profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to use

Do not rely on old Windows 10 instructions such as Settings > Devices or Update & Security > Recovery. Current Windows 11 paths use Bluetooth & devices, Windows Update, and System > Recovery.

Likewise, the old Control Panel troubleshooters and msdt.exe-based guides are being retired. They are not the appropriate default fix for a current Windows 11 right-click problem.

FAQ

Why does right-click work in apps but not File Explorer?

File Explorer may be hanging because of a third-party shell extension, such as an archive, cloud-storage, PDF, graphics, or security integration. Restart Windows Explorer, then use Autoruns with Microsoft entries hidden to disable non-Microsoft Explorer extensions one at a time.

Why are some right-click commands missing in Windows 11?

Windows 11 uses a compact context menu. Select Show more options, or select the item and press Shift+F10, to see legacy commands. Commands being in the expanded menu does not mean right-click is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I right-click without a working mouse?

Select the item and press Shift+F10. On a laptop, you can also try a two-finger touchpad tap or pressing the touchpad’s lower-right corner.

Will reinstalling the mouse driver delete my files?

No. Using Device Manager’s Uninstall device option removes the device driver, not your personal files. Restart Windows afterward so it can attempt to reinstall the driver.

Does Reset PC with Keep my files keep installed programs?

No. It preserves personal files but removes installed applications and resets settings. Back up important data and record application licenses before resetting.

The Bottom Line

Test another mouse first, confirm Primary mouse button is set to Left, and use Shift+F10 to separate an input problem from a context-menu problem. For File Explorer-only failures, restart Explorer and isolate third-party shell extensions. Update the driver and Windows next, then run DISM followed by SFC. Use Safe Mode, a clean boot, a new profile, the Windows Update repair reinstall, and finally Reset PC only when the earlier checks do not resolve the fault.
