If ReShade crashes, shows a black screen, or loads without its expected effects, first identify whether the game is failing to load ReShade or whether the preset and shaders are failing after ReShade loads. Then verify that ReShade is installed for the game’s actual executable and rendering API. For older games, the right API may require a compatibility wrapper, and each change should be tested separately so you can undo it if it causes problems.
Identify what is failing
The symptom points to a different first check:
- ReShade does not appear at all: Check that setup targeted the game executable rather than a launcher, and that the selected rendering API matches the game.
- The game crashes on startup or opens to a black screen: Test for a ReShade version or overlay conflict, then investigate any wrapper or API changes.
- The ReShade overlay appears, but effects are missing: Check the selected preset and the shader files it requires.
Make one change at a time and launch the game after each change. That makes it easier to identify the cause and reverse the change if necessary.
Check the game executable and rendering API
Run ReShade setup for the executable that actually starts the game, not just the launcher. Setup attempts to identify the rendering API, but ReShade’s official troubleshooting FAQ cautions that automatic identification can be wrong. Check the game’s documentation or a reliable compatibility listing, then install ReShade for the API the game uses.
The current ReShade setup source includes pathways for Direct3D 9, DXGI/Direct3D 10–12, DirectDraw, OpenGL, and Vulkan. The correct selection depends on the game and any compatibility wrapper it uses; the game’s original API alone may not be the interface ReShade sees after a wrapper is installed.

Choose a compatibility route for an older renderer
Some older games use APIs that ReShade cannot target directly through the usual setup path. A wrapper can translate the game’s graphics calls into an API ReShade can use, but it can also introduce visual glitches, performance problems, or crashes. Back up the game folder and follow the wrapper’s current instructions before changing files.
Direct3D 8: convert to Direct3D 9
- Get the
d3d8to9tool referenced by the ReShade troubleshooting FAQ. - Place its
d3d8.dllin the game folder beside the game executable. - Run ReShade setup for the game executable and select Direct3D 9.
- Launch the game and check for stability and rendering issues before adding other changes.
DirectX 1–7, DirectDraw, or Glide: use a wrapper
The FAQ describes DXGL and dgVoodoo2 as possible compatibility routes for older APIs. Its mapping is:
| Compatibility route | Interface to select in ReShade | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| DXGL | OpenGL | The FAQ describes DXGL as exposing OpenGL. Wrapper compatibility and stability depend on the game. |
| dgVoodoo2 | Direct3D 10 or newer | The FAQ says dgVoodoo2 exposes Direct3D 11 and is the option compatible with Glide; compatibility is not guaranteed for every game. |
Install and configure the wrapper according to its own current instructions, then install ReShade for the API the wrapper exposes. Do not assume a wrapper will fix every rendering issue: ReShade’s FAQ warns that wrapping old games can cause broken visuals, performance issues, or crashes.
Troubleshoot startup crashes and black screens
Update ReShade and check overlay conflicts
Start with the current ReShade release. Temporarily disable third-party overlays and monitoring tools one at a time, then relaunch the game. The official FAQ names MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as possible conflicts. If disabling one resolves the issue, you have isolated a conflict; re-enable other tools individually to determine which combination is responsible.

Try the targeted DirectX 11 DLL rename only when applicable
For a game using DirectX 11, the FAQ suggests trying a rename from dxgi to d3d11. Treat this as a compatibility test, not a general black-screen fix. Preserve the original filename and restore it if the test does not help or makes the game less stable.
Test wrappers and ReShade in separate stages
- Back up the game folder and confirm the unmodified game launches.
- Install and test the wrapper without ReShade.
- Install ReShade for the API exposed by the wrapper, then test again.
- If the game fails, remove or revert only the most recent change and retest.
This staged approach helps distinguish a ReShade problem from a wrapper problem or an interaction between multiple graphics hooks. Avoid changing several DLLs or settings at once.
If the setup tool itself crashes
The FAQ contains historical advice that ReShade versions from 4.4 used .NET Framework 4.8. That is version-specific guidance, not an established requirement for current setup releases. Do not treat it as a universal fix for a modern setup-tool crash.
Fix effects that are missing after ReShade loads
If the overlay is visible, verify that the intended preset is selected and that the shader files it calls for are present in the shader folder. A preset can load while some or all of its effects remain unavailable if the required files are missing. The ReShade FAQ also warns that presets made for older ReShade versions may not work with newer versions.

If setup could not download the standard shader archive, the FAQ’s workaround is to download the official shader repository and put its Shaders and Textures folders in the ReShade folder under the game path. Use the repository linked from the official ReShade GitHub page, and confirm the folders are in the game’s ReShade directory rather than an unrelated installation folder.
Remove ReShade or undo a failed change safely
The FAQ recommends uninstalling through the ReShade setup tool. If you remove files manually, first confirm that each file belongs to ReShade. A DLL with a familiar name may instead be part of the game or another required component. The setup source describes checking whether an existing proxy DLL belongs to ReShade and warning when it may not.
Files the FAQ lists for manual removal include ReShade configuration or preset INI files, the API proxy DLL (for example, d3d9.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll, or opengl32.dll), and the reshade-shaders folder. Back up files first, and do not delete a same-named DLL unless you have confirmed its origin.
