If Streamlabs Desktop will not save a recording, first check the recording folder and available disk space. Then test a folder your account can write to, note the exact error, and work through the relevant fix below. For missing audio, a recording that will not stop, or an encoder option that is absent, use the symptom-specific sections.
Fix a recording that does not save
Streamlabs Support notes that recording may fail to create a video file in the chosen folder. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking storage and folder access first, then testing administrator permissions and the app’s listed software dependencies. These steps address common causes, but no single fix is guaranteed.
- Write down the exact error. In particular, note whether it says “An unexpected error occurred: Unable to write to,” shows an empty unexpected-error message, or displays no error.
- Check free disk space and the recording destination. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Output and review the recording path. Confirm the destination drive has space and that your Windows account can write to the selected folder.
- Test a folder you can write to. Change the recording path to a known writable folder, then make a short test recording. If the file saves there, the original destination or its permissions are likely involved.
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop and try running it as administrator. Then test recording again.
- Update or reinstall the listed dependencies and drivers. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting article lists the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2017 and current graphics-card drivers. Try these if the earlier checks do not resolve the problem, especially when the error is empty or no file appears.
For the “Unable to write to” message, prioritize the destination’s permissions and available space. Streamlabs’ full guidance is in its Recording Issues in Streamlabs Desktop article, last updated April 25, 2025.
If recording fails only while streaming
Recording and streaming at once can expose encoder or quality-setting conflicts. Streamlabs suggests testing a recording encoder different from the stream encoder, or setting recording quality to Same as Stream for an empty unexpected-error case.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings > Output and review the recording encoder and quality options.
- If you are recording and streaming simultaneously, try a different recording encoder from the one used for the stream.
- If the error is empty, test Same as Stream for recording quality.
- Make a short test recording, first without streaming and then with streaming, to identify whether the failure is tied to the combined workload or configuration.
Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affects the result. Streamlabs’ How to Record on Streamlabs Desktop guide, last updated October 2, 2025, covers the recording options.
Choose recording settings your computer can sustain
In Settings > Output, Streamlabs Desktop lets you configure the recording path, format, encoder, and rate control. The right combination depends on your hardware, what you are recording, whether you are also streaming, and how much editing flexibility or file size matters. Treat the guide’s settings as starting points, then record a short sample and check both playback and system performance.

Encoder: CPU or GPU
- x264 encodes using the CPU. If the CPU is already busy with a game or other work, encoding can add load.
- NVENC uses the GPU’s encoding capability. Its availability and options depend on your graphics hardware and Streamlabs Desktop version.
Monitor system performance during a test recording. If the computer struggles, reduce output resolution or adjust other quality settings before committing to a long capture.
Rate control, resolution, and frame rate
Streamlabs’ recording guide recommends CQP for supported recording workflows and CRF for x264. These are guide recommendations, not universal presets: test a brief clip on your own system and check visual quality, file size, and performance.

- For gameplay, the guide recommends matching the base canvas to the monitor resolution. If performance suffers, lower the output resolution.
- It recommends 60 FPS for action-heavy footage; 30 FPS can be adequate for static content. Higher frame rates require more resources and can increase file size.
- Balance resolution and frame rate against available CPU or GPU headroom, especially when recording and streaming together.
Format and destination
Choose the recording format based on whether you need to edit the footage and what your workflow accepts. Keep the destination on a drive with enough free space and a folder your account can write to. If a recording fails, test another writable destination before changing unrelated quality settings.
If Streamlabs will not stop recording
If clicking stop leaves a spinner, the recording timer resets, or the app appears unable to finish, check whether Logi Tune is installed. Streamlabs’ issue article identifies Logi Tune as a possible cause and reports uninstalling it as a workaround. The issue page is marked resolved with a workaround available; if the problem continues, contact Streamlabs Support.

- Check the mixer. Make sure the desktop audio source is not muted.
- Select the correct device. In Streamlabs Desktop, manually choose the intended desktop audio device rather than relying on an incorrect or unavailable selection.
- Close audio-management utilities. Streamlabs says such utilities can conflict with capture; close them and test again.
- Check Windows playback-device exclusive mode. Review the selected playback device’s properties in Windows and test with exclusive mode disabled if it is enabled.
- Try the listed software checks only if needed. Streamlabs’ audio support article also lists Windows C++ redistributables and describes a software-routing workaround as a last resort.

If NVENC rescale output is unavailable
Streamlabs’ May 25, 2026 support article describes a specific case in Desktop 1.20.4: standard NVENC lacks the rescale option, while NVENC (New) has it. First check your installed Streamlabs Desktop version and the current support article, since the described behavior is version-specific.
The reported alternatives are x264, which uses the CPU, or a preview build, which may be unstable. Consider x264 only if your CPU can handle the added work. A preview build is not a routine first fix when you need a dependable recording setup.

Or let it run in the cloud
Streamlabs Desktop is for making recordings on your computer. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
Quick Recap
- Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
