A Qwen out-of-memory (OOM) error is usually best addressed by changing the workload or runtime settings before upgrading your GPU. First identify whether memory runs out while loading the model, processing the prompt, or generating tokens; then adjust the setting that applies to your runtime. The right configuration depends on the checkpoint, precision or quantization, context length, and serving load.
Identify when and where memory runs out
Record the configuration before changing it. The details make it easier to isolate the cause and compare each attempt:
- Model ID and checkpoint, including any quantized variant.
- Runtime and version: Transformers, vLLM, or TGI, for example.
- GPU model, number of GPUs, and currently available VRAM.
- Precision or quantization setting, maximum input/context length, and output-token limit.
- Batch size and number of concurrent requests, if serving requests.
- The full error message and whether it occurs during model loading, prompt prefill, or token generation.
Those stages can have different memory pressures. A failure during loading points first toward model-weight memory or device placement; a failure during a long prompt or under concurrent traffic points toward context, cache, or request-load settings. Change one variable at a time and retain the error output so you can tell whether the failure point has moved.
Fix dtype and placement in Transformers
Check the dtype used to load the checkpoint. Qwen’s Transformers documentation says that omitting torch_dtype="auto" can leave the model in float32 by default; float32 uses twice the memory of a 16-bit dtype and is slower. Where appropriate for the checkpoint and hardware, make dtype selection explicit:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
torch_dtype="auto"
For example, pass it to the model-loading call used by your application. Confirm that the selected dtype is supported by both the checkpoint and the hardware; do not assume that every model or GPU supports every precision. See Qwen’s Transformers inference documentation.
If you use device_map="auto", inspect which devices actually receive the model. Qwen cautions that this Transformers setting is not tensor parallelism, so it should not be treated as a way to split computation across GPUs in the same manner as a tensor-parallel serving setup. The Qwen quickstart provides workflow context for its documented Transformers and vLLM examples.

Adjust vLLM context and memory settings
Set the context limit to the workload
Lower --max-model-len to the longest context your application actually needs. A configured context limit can reserve room for larger requests than users typically send. Qwen’s v2.5 vLLM troubleshooting guide says, “Reducing it to a proper length for yourself often helps with the OOM issue.” Set a limit that still accommodates the prompt and desired response; a smaller limit will reject or constrain requests that exceed it.
Inspect utilization and CUDA Graph overhead
Check --gpu-memory-utilization and the behavior of your installed vLLM version. Qwen’s v2.5 guide describes a default of 0.9 and notes that CUDA Graphs can use memory outside vLLM’s controlled allocation. For that version-specific guidance, trying a lower utilization setting or --enforce-eager may help. Eager mode can reduce performance, so compare it against the normal mode under your real workload. These flags and defaults can change; verify them in the documentation for the vLLM version you installed before applying the older Qwen v2.5 vLLM troubleshooting guidance. For current Qwen serving instructions, consult the stable vLLM deployment page.

Reduce request load and token limits
If the model loads but fails on prompts or under traffic, reduce the workload before changing hardware. Try a shorter input/context limit, a lower output-token cap, a smaller batch, or fewer concurrent requests. Each reduction can affect what the application accepts or how many requests it serves at once, so validate the resulting limits against user needs.
TGI token controls
For Text Generation Inference (TGI), Qwen specifically identifies three settings to choose carefully when long contexts cause OOM errors:

--max-batch-prefill-tokens: limits tokens handled during batch prefill.--max-total-tokens: limits the total tokens allowed for a request.--max-input-tokens: limits input tokens.
Set limits that match the application’s actual prompt and output requirements, rather than raising them to the largest possible values. Consult Qwen’s TGI deployment documentation for its token-limit guidance.

Quantization can reduce model-weight memory, but it does not remove memory needed for the KV cache, context, or runtime overhead. Check that the chosen checkpoint is supported by your runtime and hardware, and weigh memory savings against any quality or operational trade-offs. Qwen documents FP8 and AWQ variants for Qwen3 with vLLM on its vLLM deployment page, and describes AWQ in its AWQ documentation.

One Qwen Transformers benchmark illustrates how much results depend on the specific setup: for Qwen3-14B at input length 1, it reports 28,402 MB for BF16 and 9,962 MB for AWQ-INT4. These are benchmark measurements for that model, runtime, quantization, and input length—not universal VRAM requirements. See the Qwen speed benchmark for its test conditions and other input lengths.
When a GPU upgrade makes sense
Consider a higher-VRAM GPU only if the model and workload still do not fit after you have checked dtype, context and token limits, request load, runtime settings, and compatible quantization. There is no reliable VRAM target from the model name alone: the checkpoint, precision, context length, serving cache, concurrency, and runtime all affect demand. Compare the memory available to your process with the requirements of the configuration you intend to run; a hardware recommendation needs those setup details.
