A phone that sounds quiet, muffled, or crackly may have a blocked opening, an audio-routing or volume setting, a problem with one app or file, or a call connection issue—not necessarily a failed speaker. Test different kinds of audio first, then try the reversible checks below. If the same distortion persists across sources after those checks, contact the phone maker or an authorized service provider.
First identify which sound is affected
Test a local recording and play two or three songs or videos from different apps. Then place a call and compare the earpiece receiver with speakerphone. These comparisons help separate a speaker problem from an issue with one file, app, call route, or network connection.
- Only one song, video, or recording sounds wrong: The file itself may be distorted. Try another copy or source before changing phone settings.
- Media is affected across apps: Check volume, output routing, and openings; persistent distortion across sources may need service.
- Calls are affected but media is clear: Check in-call volume and reception separately. Test both the receiver and speakerphone.
- Only alerts seem quiet: Check alert-related settings as well as the relevant volume control; these settings do not necessarily explain quiet media.
Google recommends testing multiple songs or videos from different apps on Pixel phones. If all sources remain distorted, Google advises contacting Pixel support: Google Pixel speaker and sound troubleshooting.
Check volume and where the audio is going
Play the affected audio—or keep a call active—while adjusting volume, so you change the relevant control. A phone can have separate controls for media, calls, and alerts. Check that Bluetooth or another connected audio device is not taking the sound instead of the phone speaker. Samsung recommends removing connected accessories and disabling Bluetooth while troubleshooting Galaxy audio: Samsung Galaxy audio troubleshooting.

On an iPhone, Apple also recommends checking Silent mode and Do Not Disturb when alerts are affected. Those settings concern alerts and may not account for quiet music or video. See Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch speaker troubleshooting.
Remove anything covering the speaker or receiver
Temporarily remove the case and screen protector, then retest. Inspect the speaker and receiver openings for visible blockage, but do not push anything into them or remove internal parts. A poorly fitted protector can cover the top receiver; Samsung also notes that a case or film covering Galaxy air vents can contribute to low or crackly sound. Vent and opening locations vary by model.

Clean only in the way your phone maker recommends
Follow instructions for the exact device rather than assuming one cleaning method suits every phone. Apple advises: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure the brush is clean and dry.” Use that method only for a compatible Apple device and only if needed. Google advises gently wiping dirty speakers with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Samsung warns: “Avoid using cans of compressed air when drying or cleaning your device, as these may cause damage.” Avoid liquids, sharp tools, forceful poking, or treating cleaning as a fix for a damaged speaker. Cleaning guidance: Google Pixel support and Samsung Galaxy support.

If the problem happens only on calls, check the connection
Raise the volume during the call and try a different location. Weak reception or a call connection can cause static or crackling even when local media sounds normal. Google recommends checking signal strength, trying another location, and checking Wi-Fi calling conditions; Apple also notes that reception may explain persistent call static or crackling. If calls are the only affected sound, investigate the connection before concluding that the media speaker is faulty.
Consider moisture or a pressure change where relevant
Water in a speaker can affect sound. For a wet Galaxy, Samsung advises drying the exterior and gently patting the earpiece, microphone, external speaker, and USB port with a clean, soft cloth. Salt residue may collect as water dries and block openings. Follow the water-resistance and drying guidance for your own model; do not apply Galaxy-specific instructions to other phones.

Samsung also says that on some Galaxy devices, a recent air-pressure change can temporarily make sound quiet, crackly, or distorted; the symptom may improve as pressure equalizes. If it does not improve, use Samsung’s troubleshooting and support guidance rather than probing openings.
Restart, update, and use device diagnostics
- Restart the phone. Restart steps vary by model and generation. After restarting, test more than one app or sound source again.
- Install available software updates. Samsung includes updates among its Galaxy audio troubleshooting steps.
- On a Galaxy, run Samsung Members diagnostics. Samsung also suggests Safe mode as a way to check whether a downloaded app is involved. Follow the instructions for your model in Samsung’s audio troubleshooting guide.
- Contact the manufacturer if the symptom persists across sources. Apple, Google, and Samsung each provide support paths for unresolved device audio issues.
When to seek service—and why a factory reset is a last resort
Seek manufacturer support if distortion continues across multiple apps and files after checking routing, volume, obstructions, and a restart; if the sound problem began after damage or liquid exposure; or if a speaker remains abnormally quiet despite clear openings. Ask whether the service provider is authorized for your exact device, whether it diagnoses before replacing parts, what the total quoted price and turnaround time are, how warranty coverage may be affected, and what backup or data-handling steps are required. Prices and repair times depend on the device and provider; the support guidance cited here does not establish comparable estimates.

A factory reset is not a first-line speaker fix. Samsung warns that it erases data and recommends backing up first. It may also fail to permanently resolve an app-related problem if that app still needs an update. Try the reversible checks and manufacturer support options before considering a reset.
