Start by identifying where the problem appears: in TrenchBroom while opening or editing the source map, during compilation, or when loading the compiled map in the game. The right fix depends on the stage and on whether the missing asset is base-game data, a mod file, a WAD, or a loose image. The steps below cover TrenchBroom’s documented Quake setup and one specific QuakeForge error; other engines and compilers may use different paths and rules.
1. Identify when the map fails
Separate the issue into one of these stages before changing files:

- In TrenchBroom: the map will not open correctly, or textures/materials are missing in the editor.
- During compilation: the compiler reports missing WADs or cannot find textures.
- In the game: the compiled map fails to load or displays missing textures at runtime.
TrenchBroom’s configuration and a game engine’s runtime asset lookup are not necessarily the same. If the map loads in the editor but fails in-game, note the engine or port, the full console error, and the compiler output; the editor steps below alone do not establish a runtime fix.
2. Check TrenchBroom’s selected game and map format
TrenchBroom attempts to detect the game and map format from the map file, but detection can fail. Quake maps can use Standard or Valve 220 format. If the map opens incorrectly or editor resources are missing, verify that TrenchBroom has the intended game and format selected rather than assuming detection was correct. See the TrenchBroom manual’s game configuration guidance.

3. Verify the Quake game path and active mod
TrenchBroom uses id1 as Quake’s default mod. Additional mods are directories inside the game directory and can provide their own assets. In the game configuration, make sure the configured game path points to the installation containing the assets, and that the map is using the mod where its required files are located. If the game configuration is missing or points to another installation, TrenchBroom may not have access to the expected materials.
4. Check WAD references in the map
Quake and related engines can store WAD paths in the map’s worldspawn wad property. The property contains a semicolon-separated list, and map compilers use these references to locate WAD files. Confirm that each referenced WAD exists at the specified path. If you manage the WADs through TrenchBroom, use its WAD controls to add or reload the files, then check that the map’s references point to the intended files. The TrenchBroom manual documents the WAD workflow.

5. Check the directory layout for loose images
If you are using loose image files instead of WADs, TrenchBroom expects a collection directory exactly one level below a textures folder under the configured game path or a loaded mod. For example, a file can be placed in textures/mycollection/. Loose files directly inside textures/, or images nested more deeply than one collection directory, are not detected by TrenchBroom’s documented layout. Adjust the folder structure or use the WAD workflow as appropriate for the map and target engine.
6. Apply the QuakeForge fix only to its documented WAD error
If QuakeForge prints W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad, its FAQ says the most common cause is that QuakeForge cannot find pak0.pak. This is a QuakeForge-specific diagnostic, not a general explanation for every missing texture. QuakeForge searches $fs_userpath/id1 and $fs_sharepath/id1. Its FAQ gives these defaults:

7. Use the error and asset type to choose the next check
| What is missing or failing? | First check |
|---|---|
| Materials in TrenchBroom | Selected game and map format, configured game path, and active mod. |
| WAD textures during editing or compilation | The worldspawn wad property, referenced paths, and whether the WAD is available to the editor or compiler. |
| Loose custom images in TrenchBroom | The one-level collection directory beneath textures. |
QuakeForge W_LoadWadFile: unable to load gfx.wad |
Whether QuakeForge can find pak0.pak under its configured user or share path. |
| Compiled map fails in another engine or port | Record the engine name, exact console error, map format, and compiler output; the checks above do not establish that engine’s lookup rules. |
