First identify which feature is lagging: Remote Play streams from your own PS5, while cloud streaming delivers an eligible game from PlayStation’s service. Their network requirements and fixes differ. For Remote Play, check upload as well as download speed, reduce competing traffic, and test 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet. For PS Portal cloud streaming, check service eligibility and network status, then lower the resolution if the connection is unstable.
Identify the stream before changing settings

A speed test can identify a connection that falls below PlayStation’s guidance, but speed alone does not establish low latency or a stable stream. The guidance below comes from PlayStation support pages for the UK, Canada and US; availability and current instructions can differ by region.
Fix lag in PS5 Remote Play
1. Check the console, app and account
- Check PlayStation Network status if the problem appears service-wide or involves signing in.
- Make sure the PS5 is on or in Rest Mode, Remote Play is enabled, and the console and remote device are signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and make sure Enable Remote Play is on.
- If you need to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Install current PS5 system software and update the Remote Play app.
PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guidance lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. These are vendor thresholds, not a guarantee of lag-free play.
2. Reduce network congestion and test the connection
- Run speed tests on both the PS5 and the device receiving the stream. Check upload and download, not download alone.
- Pause downloads and other demanding network activity, then try again while other devices are idle.
- If using Wi-Fi, try a 5 GHz network and check whether other devices can use the connection reliably.
- Where practical, connect a PC or Mac by Ethernet to compare with Wi-Fi. If the PS5 is wired, check that its LAN cable is seated securely.
A wired test can help reveal Wi-Fi variability; it does not address every possible source of lag. PlayStation specifically recommends trying a wired connection on PC or Mac.

3. Check NAT and router-related connection problems
PlayStation says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. If the app cannot connect or the connection fails despite the basic checks, consult your internet provider, router manufacturer or mobile carrier before changing router settings. Avoid making unfamiliar port or firewall changes without understanding their effect on your network.
4. Separate app or compatibility issues from network lag
If Remote Play still fails, restart the app and, if needed, reinstall it. On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking the app. Some games and functions are incompatible with Remote Play; if the issue occurs only with a particular game or feature, check compatibility before treating it as a network fault.

Fix lag in PS Portal cloud streaming
1. Confirm the game and account are eligible
PS Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account with an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, a supported country or region, and a game currently eligible for streaming. A game appearing in a PlayStation catalog does not by itself mean it can be streamed on Portal. Check PlayStation’s current cloud-streaming overview for applicable service details.
2. Check Portal network status and adjust resolution
- Update the Portal’s system software.
- Open the Quick Menu and choose Troubleshooting to check network quality or status.
- During a stream, open the Quick Menu and choose Max Resolution. PlayStation’s Portal cloud-streaming support guidance specifies a minimum connection of 13 Mbps for 1080p with a stable connection, or 7 Mbps for 720p when speed is lower or stability is a concern.
- Restart the streaming game after changing the maximum resolution so the setting takes effect.
PlayStation’s US cloud-streaming overview gives a different set of figures: a 5 Mbps session minimum, with recommended speeds of 13 Mbps for 720p, 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p. These are overview recommendations, not the Portal support page’s resolution-specific minimums; use the guidance for the feature and device you are troubleshooting.

PlayStation cautions that “Individual game performance will vary based on the specific game being played, and the quality of connectivity in your network environment.” A speed-test result therefore cannot promise a particular resolution, frame rate or latency.

Contact your internet provider, router manufacturer or mobile carrier if Remote Play’s NAT type or connection path appears to be the obstacle and you are unsure how to check it safely. For Portal cloud streaming, first distinguish a network problem from account, region or game eligibility; a router change will not resolve an ineligible stream. If you can, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet before considering new networking equipment.
