If a PS5 Pro game looks blurry or runs poorly, first check whether the problem affects one game or the whole display. A problem in one title usually calls for checking that game’s graphics modes and updates; problems across menus and multiple games point more toward the console’s video output, HDMI connection, or display. There is no single setting that fixes every game, because rendering modes and features vary by title.

First, determine whether the problem is one game or the whole display

Check the PS5 menus and a second game. If those look normal but one title is soft or choppy, start with that game’s settings and publisher updates. If menus and several games also look wrong, check the console’s output signal and the display path.

Sony documents game presets separately from system video-output settings. Not every game offers the same graphics modes or supports the same features, so do not assume every PS5 Pro title has a Resolution mode, Performance mode, PSSR, or a particular frame-rate target.

Why does one PS5 Pro game look blurry or run poorly?

Compare the game’s graphics modes

If the game offers Performance and Resolution modes, compare them in its graphics or display settings. Sony describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother motion and Resolution Mode as prioritizing higher graphic quality. These are general tradeoffs, not guarantees about a specific game’s image or frame rate; names and results vary by title. See Sony’s guide to game presets.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

For choppy motion, Performance mode is a useful comparison if available. For insufficient image detail, try Resolution mode. Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene so you can tell whether the change helps the symptom.

Check the game’s update and support notes

If only one game remains blurry or unstable, check for its latest update and the publisher’s current support notes. A title-specific patch, graphics option, or known issue cannot be diagnosed from console-wide settings alone.

Check the PS5 Pro’s reported video output

Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check Current Video Output Signal and the selected Resolution. Sony says Automatic resolution selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. Also review VRR, 120 Hz Output, HDR, and Video Transfer Rate when relevant to your display and symptom. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide explains these output options.

A 4K/120 Hz signal requires support across the console, game, TV, HDMI port, cable, and connection path. Selecting a setting cannot make an unsupported mode available.

Use output-setting changes only for the symptom they address

  • Flicker with 4K: Sony says setting Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 limits output and may improve picture quality. This is a targeted flicker test, not a general sharpness enhancement.
  • Video problems at 120 Hz: Turn off 120 Hz Output as a test. Sony advises disabling it if it causes problems with a monitor or other display.
  • Unexpected VRR behavior: If VRR is applied to an unsupported game and causes problems, turn VRR off as a test.

Inspect the HDMI cable, port, and display connection

If output is missing, flickering, or unexpectedly limited, reseat the HDMI connection and connect the PS5 Pro directly to the TV or monitor while troubleshooting. Use an HDMI port that supports the signal you want, update the display’s firmware, and confirm whether the TV requires a setting for high-resolution signals.

Sony recommends the cable supplied with the PS5 for high-performance features; a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is another option for 4K/120 Hz. Consider replacing a cable only if it is damaged or unsuitable. A new cable will not improve a game’s internal resolution or frame rate when the existing signal path is working correctly. Remove receivers, splitters, or capture devices temporarily to isolate the connection.

Adjust PS5 Pro image enhancements only when relevant

PSSR for compatible games

The Enhance PSSR Image Quality option is under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says it is on by default and applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games. If image behavior is unexpected in a compatible title, toggle it off and compare. It is not a universal blur switch. See Sony’s video output guidance.

Image enhancement for PS4 games

Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate setting for PS4 games on PS5 Pro models in the CFI-7000 group; it is not a setting for PS5-native games. Sony says it requires a display supporting 2160p (4K) or 1440p at 60 Hz and advises turning it off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. Consult Sony’s PS5 Pro output guidance and PS5 backward compatibility information for details.

Try Safe Mode only for persistent system-level performance symptoms

If the console has persistent system-wide performance drops after checking game settings and the display path, Sony lists Clear System Software Cache as a Safe Mode option to try for performance drops or system-feature issues. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database; Sony describes it as useful for system-feature issues or stale game icons. Neither is a guaranteed fix for an individual game’s graphics quality.

Some Safe Mode options erase data. Do not use reset or reinstall options as routine picture-quality troubleshooting; back up important data and consult Sony’s Safe Mode instructions before choosing an option.

When to contact the game publisher or PlayStation Support

If one game remains blurry or unstable after checking its modes and updates, contact the game’s publisher or consult its current support notes. If multiple games, the console interface, or the video signal continue to have problems after the output and connection checks, use Sony’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance or PlayStation Repairs. Sony lists TV connection, flicker, overheating, and 8K image concerns as separate troubleshooting categories.
