PS5 controller stick drift is unwanted movement registered while the analog stick is untouched. Confirm that the controller is reporting input, then try Sony’s reset and software-update steps. If drift continues, the next step depends on whether you have a DualSense Edge or a standard DualSense: Edge owners can replace a separately sold stick module, while standard DualSense joystick replacement is a soldering repair.
Confirm that the controller is actually drifting
Drift means the controller reports directional input while the stick is at rest—for example, a character moves or the camera turns even though you are not touching the stick. First check whether the movement is coming from the controller rather than assuming a game setting or other software is responsible.
One way to check is to connect the controller to a computer and view its input in a controller tester, as described by iFixit’s PS5 controller drift troubleshooting guide. If the tester shows input while the stick is untouched, the controller is reporting movement. This is a diagnostic check, not a Sony calibration procedure, and it does not identify which component is at fault.
Try Sony’s troubleshooting steps
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Reset the controller. Press and hold the small reset button on the back for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect it with the official USB cable and press the PS button.
- Update PS5 system software if the console is usable. Sony says DualSense controller device software updates are delivered with PS5 system software updates; Sony also lists a manual controller-update path at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
Sony gives these steps on its DualSense troubleshooting page. If the problem remains, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. Repair availability and terms depend on the controller and region; check with Sony for current eligibility, cost, warranty coverage, and turnaround.

What can cause PS5 controller stick drift?
Possible causes include software or settings, debris inside or around the stick, wear in the joystick mechanism, or a faulty circuit board. A persistent symptom alone does not prove which cause applies. A tester can confirm reported input, but it cannot distinguish debris from worn hardware or a board fault.
When cleaning may help
Cleaning is worth considering when grime or grease could be interfering with stick movement. iFixit’s DualSense Controller V2 cleaning guide is specifically for drift caused by gunk or grease; it is not a general fix for every DualSense revision or for a worn joystick.

Do not treat spraying or cleaning as a guaranteed repair. If the stick mechanism is worn or the fault is on the circuit board, cleaning may not resolve the drift. The cited guides do not establish a particular liquid or spray as Sony-approved, so avoid assuming that any cleaning product is safe for your controller.

DualSense Edge: replace the stick module
Sony says a DualSense Edge stick module that does not work properly or stops working can be replaced with a separately sold module. The modules are interchangeable between the left and right positions. Use Sony’s controller support information and the DualSense Edge instruction manual for the procedure and safety cautions. This module is for the Edge, not the standard DualSense.

Standard DualSense: joystick replacement requires soldering
For a standard DualSense, joystick replacement is not the Edge-style module swap. iFixit’s DualSense joystick replacement guide describes a repair involving soldering and difficult desoldering, and rates the work for people with intermediate soldering skills. Check the controller revision and replacement-part compatibility before starting. If you lack the necessary skills or equipment, use Sony’s repair route instead.

Decide what to do next
- The input test shows no movement while the stick is untouched: investigate game settings or software behavior before opening the controller.
- The input test shows movement, but debris or grease seems plausible: a model-appropriate cleaning procedure may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- The drift persists after Sony’s reset and update steps: consider a hardware fault. Edge owners can use the replaceable module path; standard DualSense joystick replacement requires soldering.
