Test several local file types first: if only one type fails, troubleshoot the application that supplies its preview handler; if downloaded files fail but local ones work, check for Mark of the Web.
The Preview pane and file thumbnails are separate features, and an application that opens a file does not necessarily provide a File Explorer preview handler.
1. Turn on the Preview pane
First make sure the pane itself is enabled:
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select View on the command bar.
- Select Show.
- Select Preview pane.
The pane should appear on the right side of the File Explorer window. Select a file to test it.
If Preview pane is already selected but the pane remains blank, continue with the next fix.

2. Enable preview handlers
Windows uses separate preview handlers to render PDFs, Office documents, images, email files, and other formats. File Explorer can be configured to prevent those handlers from running.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select the See more button (…).
- Select Options.
- Open the View tab in Folder Options.
- Under Advanced settings, select Show preview handlers in preview pane.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Do not clear this checkbox as a troubleshooting step. It allows registered preview handlers to render content; clearing it disables handler-based previews.
3. Test several file types
Use files stored locally on the computer, not just downloads or network files. Test one file from each group:

| Tests the installed PDF preview component | |
| .docx or .xlsx | Tests the Microsoft 365 or Office preview handler |
Use the results to narrow down the problem:
| What happens | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| No file type previews | The pane or preview handlers are disabled, File Explorer is malfunctioning, or Windows components are damaged. |
| Images preview, but PDFs do not | The PDF preview handler is missing, disabled, conflicting, or blocked. |
| Office documents do not preview | The Office installation or its preview handler needs repair. |
| Only one extension fails | The application associated with that extension owns the broken or missing handler. |
| Downloaded files fail, but locally created files work | Windows is blocking files marked as downloaded from the internet. |
An application that opens a file is not necessarily an application that provides a File Explorer preview handler. Those are related but separate functions.

4. Unblock trusted downloaded files
Windows 11 security updates released from October 14, 2025 changed how File Explorer handles files downloaded from the internet. On Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, File Explorer can disable previews for files carrying Mark of the Web information.
You may see this warning in the Preview pane:
The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents.
This does not mean that Microsoft removed the Preview pane. It means Windows is preventing a preview handler from processing content with an internet-origin security mark.

Unblock one file
Only do this when you trust both the file and its source:

- Right-click the file in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, select Unblock.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If the preview does not return immediately, sign out of Windows and sign in again. The change may not take effect until the next sign-in.
Unblock multiple trusted files with PowerShell
Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell and run this command, replacing the path with the folder you want to check:
Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath “C:\Path\To\Folder” -Recurse -File | Unblock-File
For one file, use:
Unblock-File -LiteralPath “C:\Path\To\File.pdf”
This removes the Zone.Identifier alternate data stream that identifies an internet-originated file. Review the files and their sources before using the recursive command. Do not bulk-unblock files merely to remove a warning you do not understand.
Fix previews from a trusted network share
If files are stored on a trusted server and Windows treats that server as an Internet Zone location, add only that server to the appropriate security zone:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
- Open the Security tab.
- Select Local intranet or Trusted sites.
- Select Sites.
- Add the trusted file server’s address.
- Select Close, then OK.
Do not add an entire network range or an unknown server just to restore previews. This changes how Windows treats files from that location.
5. Fix PDF previews
PDF preview requires a PDF preview component. Installing a PDF reader does not always mean its Explorer preview feature is enabled.
Enable the Adobe PDF preview handler
For Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader:
- Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
- Open the hamburger menu (☰) and select Preferences.
- Select General.
- Select Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer.
- Select OK.
- If Adobe asks to add the feature to the installation, select Yes.
If the option is missing, update Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
Check PowerToys
Microsoft PowerToys can provide preview handlers and may override another installed PDF handler. To test for a conflict:
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select File Explorer add-ons.
- Temporarily turn off the PDF preview extension.
- Test a PDF in File Explorer again.
If PDFs work after disabling the PowerToys extension, leave the conflicting handler disabled or choose which PDF application should provide previews.
6. Repair Microsoft 365 or Office previews
If images and text files preview correctly but Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files do not, repair the Office installation:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the … button beside it.
- Select Modify.
- For a Click-to-Run installation, choose Online Repair, then Repair.
Quick Repair is faster and replaces detected damaged files. Online Repair performs a more complete repair and is the better choice when the preview handler remains broken. The repair affects the Office suite, not only the application that displays the problem.

7. Check the Outlook .msg limitation
.msg files have a specific Outlook limitation. Microsoft documents that the Windows preview host requires a 32-bit application previewer. With 64-bit Outlook installed, File Explorer may fail to preview .msg files and display messages such as:
- “Either there is no default mail client…”
- “This file can’t be previewed because of an error in the Windows e-mail previewer.”
The documented alternatives are to disable the Preview pane and open the message directly in Outlook, or install 32-bit Outlook instead of 64-bit Outlook if Explorer previewing is essential. Reinstalling a PDF viewer or repeatedly toggling the Preview pane will not fix this Outlook-specific limitation.
8. Repair Windows system files
If no file type previews even after enabling the pane and preview handlers, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
- Search for Command Prompt from the taskbar.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the command below.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to complete successfully, then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until SFC reports Verification 100% complete, then restart Windows. DISM is run first because it can provide the files that SFC needs to repair protected Windows components.
9. Install Windows updates
A cumulative update may fix File Explorer or shell problems. Check for updates before attempting invasive registry changes:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
The available update depends on your Windows 11 version and edition, so the build number on another computer may not match yours.

Restarting Explorer can clear a temporary shell problem, but it cannot install a missing preview handler.

- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
If the problem returns only for one file type, repair or reinstall the application that supplies that extension’s handler instead of repeatedly restarting Explorer.
What not to do
- Do not clear “Show preview handlers in preview pane.” That disables handler-based previews.
- Do not confuse thumbnails with the Preview pane. Thumbnails are small images in a folder view; the Preview pane displays file content in the reading pane. A file can have one working without the other.
- Do not assume changing the default app will fix previews. The default application association and the Preview pane handler are not identical.
- Do not run regsvr32 /i shell32.dll as a universal fix. Preview handlers are registered by the applications that provide them, through file associations and ShellEx registration. Identify the affected extension and its application before attempting registry repairs.
- Do not treat the October 2025 security change as removal of the feature. It blocks previews for certain internet-marked files; local, trusted files can still preview when a compatible handler is installed.
FAQ
Why does the Preview pane work for images but not PDFs?
Image and PDF previews use different handlers. Check the PDF application’s preview setting, update or repair the PDF application, and test whether PowerToys is overriding its PDF handler.
Why do downloaded files show a security warning instead of a preview?
Windows may have marked them with Mark of the Web. For a trusted file, open Properties, select Unblock, and apply the change. Sign out and back in if the preview does not return immediately.
Does changing the default app restore Preview pane support?
Not always. An application can open a file normally without installing or registering a compatible File Explorer preview handler.

Should I repair Windows before repairing Office or Acrobat?
Use the test results to choose the repair. If no file type previews, run DISM and SFC. If only Office or PDF files fail, repair the application that supplies that file type’s handler.
The Bottom Line
Start by enabling the Preview pane and Show preview handlers in preview pane. Then test multiple extensions. A failure across all file types points to File Explorer or Windows; a failure limited to PDFs, Office files, Outlook messages, or downloaded files points to that component’s handler or Windows security marking. Use application repair, Unblock-File, DISM/SFC, or a Windows update only when the test identifies the relevant cause.
