If it is not, fix the service or host firewall before changing the router. If it is reachable locally, check the forwarding rule and target address, then determine whether the router has a public WAN address and test from outside your network.
1. Confirm the service works on your local network
Try connecting to the service from another device on the same LAN using the host device’s local IP address and the service’s port. If this fails, port forwarding is not yet the problem: the router cannot forward traffic to a service that is not running or reachable on the host.
Check that the application or server is enabled, configured for the expected port, and listening for connections on the host’s LAN interface. Also check that the host firewall or third-party security software permits the required inbound traffic. If another program is using the port, the intended service may not be able to listen on it.
Allow only the specific inbound service and port you need. Temporarily disabling a firewall can help isolate a problem, as TP-Link suggests in its port-forwarding troubleshooting guide, but do not leave the firewall disabled as a fix.

2. Check the forwarding rule and target device
Once local access works, compare the router rule with the service’s actual settings. A rule can appear enabled yet send traffic to the wrong device, port, or protocol.
- Target LAN IP: Confirm the device’s current local IP address matches the rule’s destination. A DHCP reservation helps keep that address stable; if the device’s address changes, update the rule.
- Ports: Verify the external port and internal destination port against the service’s configuration. They may differ, so do not assume they are interchangeable.
- Protocol: Select the protocol the service requires—typically TCP, UDP, or both, depending on the application. Check its documentation rather than guessing.
Router menus and labels vary by model and firmware. Use the manual or support page for your exact router if you cannot find the relevant settings.

3. Check whether another router or CGNAT is upstream
Look at the WAN or Internet IP address shown in your router’s status page and compare it with the public IPv4 address seen by an online IP-checking service. If the router’s WAN address is private or does not match the public address, another network layer may be between your router and the internet.
Private WAN address or another home router
If an upstream modem/router or gateway is also routing traffic, a forwarding rule on your own router may not be enough. You may need to forward the same traffic on the upstream device as well, or configure a suitable bridge or single-router setup. ASUS explains that port forwarding may not function properly when a router is behind another router with multi-layer NAT in its port-forwarding support guidance.

WAN address in the CGNAT range
An address from 100.64.0.0–100.127.255.255 is in the shared address block used for carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), rather than a public IPv4 address directly assigned to your router. Your router cannot control the ISP’s upstream NAT. TP-Link states that port forwarding requires a public WAN IP address in its CGNAT and public-IP guidance. Ask your ISP whether it offers a public IPv4 address or another supported way to accept inbound connections; availability depends on the provider.
4. Test from a genuinely external network
After checking the service, rule, firewall, and WAN address, test the public address and forwarded port from a device that is not on your home network—for example, a phone using cellular data with Wi‑Fi turned off. Testing the public address from inside the same LAN can fail on routers without NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT), even when outside access works. ASUS distinguishes LAN access from WAN access in its support guidance.

If the test fails from outside, revisit the earlier checks in order: local service reachability, host firewall and listening port, rule destination and protocol, and the router’s WAN address. If those are correct and the router has a public WAN address, consult the exact model’s current support information and ask your ISP whether it restricts inbound connections. ISP policies vary; the available guidance does not establish a universal filtering rule.

These fixes address different layers of the connection: a router rule cannot repair a service that fails locally, and a correctly configured home router cannot control NAT performed upstream by an ISP.
