To troubleshoot low FPS or stuttering on a Lenovo Legion Go S, first identify your exact model and operating system, then check its power source and performance mode. Next, compare more than one game, adjust demanding settings if only one title is affected, and install updates using the official route for your OS. The Go S comes in Windows and SteamOS configurations, so driver, BIOS, and recovery instructions are not interchangeable.
Before changing settings, identify the problem
Stuttering can have several causes, and the symptom alone does not identify one. Note your exact Legion Go S model or SKU, operating system and build, affected game, and whether the issue started after an update. Also record whether it happens on battery, while plugged in, or both, along with the power or thermal mode currently shown.
Configurations vary. Lenovo’s Legion Go S 8ARP1 PSREF dated May 15, 2026 identifies an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go configuration and lists Windows 11 and SteamOS options; do not assume those details apply to every Go S SKU. Confirm the exact device before following firmware or driver instructions.
Check power and performance modes first
Compare plugged-in and battery performance
Connect a known-compatible adapter and compare the same game scene on AC power and battery. Lenovo’s Windows Legion Go S guide describes Best performance as the setting for maximum performance when plugged in. If the adapter is missing, damaged, or unsuitable, check compatibility with your exact model before replacing it; the 8ARP1 PSREF lists a 65W USB-C adapter with PD 3.0 as an available configuration item, not as a guarantee of higher frame rates.

Check Windows power mode and Legion Space separately
On Windows, check Settings > System > Power & battery for the OS power mode, or use Legion Space. Lenovo documents Best performance, Balanced, and Best power efficiency; the guide says the OS power-mode feature is unavailable when Energy saver is enabled. These OS controls are separate from Legion Space’s thermal mode and TDP controls. Menu names can change with software updates.
In Legion Space, check that the device is not in Quiet mode or a low custom TDP when playing a demanding game. Lenovo’s Windows user guide lists 30 W Performance, 10 W Quiet, and Custom from 5–40 W. Those are documented settings, not a promise that a game will draw or sustain a particular wattage or achieve a particular FPS.

Work out whether one game or the whole system is affected
Try a second game or repeat a consistent scene in the affected title. If the issue appears only in one game, focus first on that game’s graphics settings. Lenovo’s general Legion performance guidance identifies anti-aliasing, global illumination or real-time shadows, texture quality, and particle effects as settings that can affect frame rate.
- Choose a repeatable scene and note the current resolution and graphics settings.
- Lower resolution or one demanding graphics setting, such as anti-aliasing or real-time shadows.
- Replay the same scene and compare the result before changing another setting.
Changing a few settings at a time makes it easier to tell which adjustment matters. Lenovo’s article covers Legion devices generally; it does not establish a tested Legion Go S preset or a guaranteed performance improvement.

Update using the route for your operating system
Windows
Use Lenovo Vantage or the Lenovo Support page for your exact model to check device drivers. Lenovo’s Legion Go S Windows guide says BIOS updates can be checked in Legion Space > Disks and Drivers. Confirm the model before installing firmware, and use its current support page rather than assuming a driver package for another Legion device applies. A current driver or BIOS version number is not established here.
SteamOS
Keep SteamOS updates and recovery guidance separate from Windows procedures. Lenovo maintains a SteamOS Legion Go S FAQ, and Steam Support’s installation and repair guidance lists Legion Go S among officially powered-by-SteamOS devices. Do not install a Windows graphics package on SteamOS or follow BIOS instructions for a different model. Reinstalling the operating system is disruptive and is not a sensible first response to ordinary stutter.

When to contact Lenovo support
If stuttering continues across multiple games after checking modes, settings, and official updates, gather details before contacting Lenovo:
- Exact model or SKU, operating system, and OS build
- Affected games and whether the problem occurs in other titles
- Whether the device is on battery or plugged in, and the selected power or thermal mode
- Settings changed, approximate temperatures if available, and any error messages
- When the problem began and the date or version of any recent update
If performance changed abruptly after an update, report the timing and version as an observation; that alone does not prove the update caused the problem. The cause cannot be isolated without the device and a reproducible description.
