If Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver will not save, do not replace a cartridge battery: Nintendo says Nintendo DS game saves do not use backup batteries. One official troubleshooting suggestion is to clean the game card’s terminals. The Pokéwalker is different—it has a replaceable battery, but that cell does not store the DS game’s save.
Why HeartGold and SoulSilver do not need a save battery
HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS games. Nintendo’s game-software repair guidance says DS and DSi software saves do not use backup batteries. A missing or failed save therefore is not, by itself, evidence that the cartridge’s save battery has died.
Nintendo also says its backup-battery replacement repair service for game software has ended. Its guidance does not name an approved third-party replacement provider. Avoid opening or modifying the card on the assumption that a battery swap is the needed repair.
What to try when the game card will not save
Clean the game-card terminals
Nintendo identifies dirty terminals as a possible cause of saving trouble and recommends cleaning them. Its support guidance does not specify a cleaning agent, tool, or detailed procedure, so follow the limits of that advice rather than applying an unverified solvent or method.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

If the problem continues
If cleaning does not resolve the issue, the fault may require diagnosis of the game card or console. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not provide a repair procedure for persistent card faults or promise save-data recovery. Specialist game-card diagnosis is an option, but no particular provider or service availability is established here.
Pokéwalker battery problems are separate
The Pokéwalker accessory uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell; that battery powers the accessory, not the save stored on the HeartGold or SoulSilver game card. Nintendo’s Pokéwalker FAQ specifies a size-1 Phillips screwdriver for replacing the cell.

Nintendo warns that replacement may erase up to one hour of the Pokéwalker’s game and step data. When the Pokéwalker communicates with the DS game, its clock resets to match the DS system. Treat a low-battery indicator, recent missing steps, or an accessory clock issue as a Pokéwalker matter—not as evidence of a cartridge save-battery failure.
