If Hindi or other Devanagari text appears as boxes, separated marks, or the wrong letters in a Playwright screenshot, first check the fonts and rendering environment—not the screenshot encoder. Confirm the page text and CSS, verify the font files are present where the browser runs, check that any web font loaded, and capture in a consistent OS and browser environment.
Why Devanagari looks broken in a Playwright screenshot
Playwright captures the page as its browser rendered it in the current runtime. If that runtime lacks a font with the required glyphs, or a requested web font fails to load, the browser may use a fallback face. A fallback can change glyph coverage, appearance, and shaping. Boxes are a clue that glyphs may be missing; separated or misordered marks can point to a font or shaping difference. Neither symptom proves a particular cause.
Playwright documents that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual-comparison guidance states: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Start by recording the exact failing case
Before changing fonts or browser settings, save the screenshot and the exact text that renders incorrectly. Record the environment that produced it; without these details, a root cause cannot be assigned reliably.

Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox; do not assume their font fallback or rendering is identical. See Playwright’s browser documentation.
Check the font in the browser’s runtime environment
A font installed on your workstation is not automatically available in a Linux CI container. Check the image or machine where Playwright launches its browser, not just the development host.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS lists the fonts-noto-core package, whose files include regular and bold Noto Sans Devanagari and Noto Serif Devanagari. If those faces are missing in an Ubuntu 24.04 runtime, add the package to the image build and verify that the resulting image contains the font files. Package names and contents can differ on other distributions and base images, so check their package metadata rather than assuming the Ubuntu instructions apply.

Check requested and effective fonts
Inspect the affected element’s computed font-family and the page’s @font-face rules. Then inspect browser network failures for font files. A declared font family is only a request: if its font resource is blocked or unavailable, the browser can fall back. A Playwright Linux issue report describes blocked requested fonts followed by system-font fallback; treat it as an example of a possible failure, not proof that every broken capture has the same cause.
Check Chromium defaults, but do not assume your build has them
Chromium’s Linux defaults are version-sensitive. A Chromium source change dated March 4, 2026 added explicit Devanagari defaults: Noto Sans Devanagari for standard and sans-serif, and Noto Serif Devanagari for serif. The change says that before it, Chromium had no configured Devanagari defaults and relied on generic system font resolution. This describes the state before that source change; it does not establish that every Playwright-installed Chromium includes the change or that the named fonts are installed in your runtime. Check the exact browser build and font files used by CI. See the Chromium source change.

Wait for the page and fonts before capturing
A screenshot taken before the application or its fonts are ready can capture an incomplete state. Wait for the page’s own ready condition and check that font requests did not fail. Playwright’s Page API documents screenshot capture and options such as injecting a stylesheet: Page.screenshot. The cited documentation does not establish a single font-readiness recipe that fits every app, so use a readiness condition appropriate to your page and verify it with your installed Playwright version.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor example, a project can wait for an app-specific element before capturing:
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('[data-app-ready="true"]').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Replace the example URL and readiness selector with the real page and a condition your application sets only when its content is ready. Network idle alone does not prove that the intended font rendered; inspect font requests and computed styles as well.

Compare one variable at a time
Use the same URL and text while changing only one factor per comparison. This helps distinguish an asset-delivery problem from a browser or environment difference, without treating any one symptom as a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Capture the page in a normal browser session and in the Playwright runtime.
- In the Playwright runtime, compare the intended web font with an installed Devanagari system font.
- If needed, compare browser engines while keeping the OS, font files, page, and capture mode fixed.
- Compare headed and headless runs separately, keeping the other conditions fixed.
If the font fails across engines, investigate CSS and font delivery. If only one engine differs, check its version, available fonts, and fallback behavior. These are diagnostic comparisons, not guaranteed decision rules.

Make screenshot baselines reproducible
Run visual comparisons in the same pinned operating-system image, browser build, and font setup. Playwright’s screenshot comparison captures until two consecutive screenshots match, which can stabilize timing within a run; it cannot make different operating systems or font stacks equivalent. Snapshot names can include browser and platform to make environment-specific baselines easier to identify. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes in place of Devanagari characters | Whether the effective font has the needed glyphs; whether the intended web font loaded. | Check computed font-family, font requests, and installed fonts in the browser runtime. |
| Separated or misordered marks | The effective font, actual text, and whether fallback differs from the intended face. | Compare with the intended web font and an installed Devanagari font in the same environment. |
| Works locally but fails in CI | Differences in OS image, installed fonts, browser build, or headless mode. | Record those values in both environments and align the CI image and browser setup. |
| Intermittent wrong or incomplete rendering | Whether capture starts before app content or font resources are ready; failed network requests. | Wait for an app-specific ready condition and inspect font-loading failures. |
| Different output across browser engines | Engine and exact version, available fonts, and fallback behavior. | Keep OS and fonts fixed, then compare one engine at a time. |

If you need a screenshot rather than a Playwright-managed browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of an Indian website:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.in -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which page verdict applied and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing Noto guarantee that every Devanagari page will render correctly?
No. The page may request a web font, use different CSS, or fail to load a font resource. Verify the effective font and the page’s actual font requests in the runtime.
Will Chromium’s newer Devanagari defaults fix older Playwright CI images?
Not necessarily. The mapping is a Chromium source change dated March 4, 2026; check whether your exact browser build includes it and whether the mapped fonts are installed.
