Compare the expected, actual, and diff images; only then adjust pixel tolerances or exclude genuinely volatile content. Raising tolerance before checking the images can hide real font, layout, or content regressions.
Why anti-aliasing differences fail screenshot tests
Anti-aliasing smooths the edges of text and other shapes by blending edge pixels. Those pixels can render differently across operating systems, browsers, browser versions, settings, hardware, and headless modes. Playwright warns that screenshot output can vary with these factors and recommends using the same environment that created the baseline. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation also explains that browser and platform differences can require distinct baselines.
A failure limited to a few glyph-edge pixels may be rasterization noise. Changed text width, weight, wrapping, alignment, or surrounding layout suggests a font-loading, page-state, or actual UI difference instead. Inspect the expected, actual, and diff images before deciding which it is.
Fix the cause before loosening comparison
1. Inspect what changed
Open all three images Playwright reports. Check whether differences are confined to antialiased edges, or whether text metrics, component positions, or page content changed. A broad shift is not safely explained away as edge noise.

2. Reproduce the baseline environment
Run baseline generation and comparison with the same operating system or container image, browser and Playwright versions, headless mode, viewport, device scale factor, and relevant rendering settings. Keep the environment that produced the reference image available in CI as well as locally. Hardware and power-source differences can also affect rendering, so a pinned OS alone may not eliminate every discrepancy.
If the project intentionally tests across platforms or browsers, use separate baselines for those environments rather than expecting one image to match every renderer.

3. Make the page state deterministic
Verify that the intended web fonts have loaded before capture and that the page is at the expected state. Stabilize test data and time-dependent content, and account for animations or other changing regions. These checks help distinguish a renderer difference from a page that was captured too early or with different content.
4. Use the screenshot-specific assertion
For page screenshots, use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Playwright’s API reference says toMatchSnapshot() can compare image buffers, but recommends toHaveScreenshot() for screenshot comparisons. The screenshot assertion also waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the expected image. See the PageAssertions reference.

Choose the right tolerance
Playwright’s screenshot comparison controls address different kinds of difference. threshold changes how much color difference is accepted for an individual pixel; maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio limit the total number or fraction of pixels that may differ. A per-pixel allowance is not the same as an allowance for a certain amount of the image to change.

These options can be set on screenshot assertions or through Playwright’s expect configuration; consult the SnapshotAssertions API reference for the current configuration details. Start with the smallest allowance that addresses an understood, low-risk difference. A larger threshold can make each mismatched pixel easier to accept; a larger pixel count or ratio can allow more of the image to differ. Keep text, icons, and layout that matter to the test sensitive. There is no universal tolerance: screenshot size and the risk of masking a regression both matter.

Playwright’s stylePath option applies a stylesheet during screenshot capture, which can hide or neutralize content that changes independently of the behavior under test, such as a live timestamp or rotating content. Keep the rule narrowly scoped. Styling out the component being tested can conceal exactly the regression the screenshot is meant to catch. Update snapshots only after review
If the UI change is intentional, regenerate the reference with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, review the resulting images, and commit the updated snapshot files with the code change. Do not use snapshot updates to make an unexplained failure disappear: first establish whether the visual difference is expected.

Troubleshoot a failure that persists
- CI fails but local passes: Compare the CI and local OS or container, browser and Playwright versions, headless mode, viewport, device scale factor, and browser settings. Generate and consume snapshots in the same pinned environment.
- Only text edges differ: Confirm the intended font loaded, then consider a modest
thresholdadjustment. If only a few pixels are affected, a carefully bounded pixel allowance may be more appropriate. - Text wrapping or layout changed: Check font readiness, viewport and scale factor, browser version, and page state. Do not treat changed dimensions or alignment as harmless anti-aliasing.
- Dynamic content keeps moving: Stabilize the underlying data or timing where possible. Use
stylePathonly for unavoidable content outside the behavior being tested. - A broad difference appeared after a UI change: Review the expected, actual, and diff images. If the change is intended, update snapshots and commit them; otherwise investigate the regression instead of raising tolerance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() compare the first screenshot immediately?
No. It waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the expected image.
Is threshold: 0.2 a recommended anti-aliasing fix?
It is the documented default, not a guarantee that a test is appropriately tolerant. Choose any adjustment based on the difference you inspected and the risk of overlooking a regression.
