If your Pixel Buds won’t update or won’t reconnect afterward, start by charging the earbuds and case, checking Bluetooth, and letting any interrupted installation resume. If that fails, forget and pair the Buds again; reset them only as a last step because a reset erases settings and preferences.
Start with charge and Bluetooth
- Charge and reseat the Buds. Charge the case and earbuds, and make sure both earbuds sit securely in the case.
- Check the host device. Turn Bluetooth on, keep the Buds nearby, then toggle Bluetooth off and on. Wait several seconds; if the Buds do not reconnect automatically, select them in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Reduce possible interference. If the connection still drops, check for nearby wireless interference, including devices using the 2.4 GHz band.
Google’s connectivity troubleshooting guide recommends these checks before moving on to re-pairing.
Let the firmware update finish or resume
For Android, Google says updates download the next time the Buds are used with a Pixel or Android 6.0 or later device. Once the Buds and case have sufficient charge, installation begins the next time the earbuds are placed in the case. Google estimates about 10 minutes for downloading and about 10 minutes for installation. These are published procedure estimates, not guaranteed timings. If installation is interrupted—for example, by removing the earbuds—it pauses and resumes at the next opportunity.
Check update status and try the manual route
Open the Pixel Buds settings and select Firmware update to check status. If a manual update is offered, select Manual update available and follow the on-screen steps; Google says this flow takes about 15 minutes. If using the web companion on Windows
Google lists the browser companion for Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2, and Pixel Buds 2a, and recommends Chrome or Edge. If a Windows update is stuck at 0% or 50%, disconnect the Buds from the companion, remove them from Windows Bluetooth devices, pair them with Windows again, then reopen the web companion and retry the update. The companion’s supported operating systems and browser requirements are listed on Google’s update help page.
Forget the Buds and pair them again
If Bluetooth checks did not restore the connection, remove Google Pixel Buds from the host device’s Bluetooth settings. Then place both earbuds securely in the open case and hold the case pairing button for 3 seconds, until the case light bounces white. Select the Buds in the host device’s Bluetooth menu or follow its pairing prompt. Some Android devices require adding them manually through Bluetooth settings.

Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps cover this process. If the light does not enter the white-bouncing pairing state, check the earbud seating and case charge before continuing.
Reset the Pixel Buds if re-pairing fails
A reset clears settings such as the device name and feature preferences, so try it only after forgetting and re-pairing have failed. These instructions apply to current models covered by Google’s pairing help; the original 2017 Pixel Buds use different case-reset steps.

- Connect the charging case to power with a USB-C cable, seat both earbuds correctly, and leave the case open.
- Hold the pairing button on the back of the case for 30 seconds. Release it when the status light stops bouncing and turns off.
- Wait for the light to blink orange and white during the reset, then bounce white when reset is complete and the Buds are ready to pair.
If the light sequence does not begin, reseat the earbuds and confirm the case is powered. Check your case’s connector before using a cable; connector compatibility varies by case generation. Google’s pairing guide provides model-specific reset details.

If the connection steps and reset do not resolve the problem, contact Google customer support. If the case will not charge or the earbuds remain unresponsive after checking power and seating, use Google’s model-specific support rather than attempting an unverified repair. Start with Google’s connectivity help or pairing help.
