When all documents fail, investigate the printer, connection, print queue, or driver. When only one PDF fails, focus on the file or the app displaying it. For a PDF that fails in Acrobat, save a fresh local copy and try Print as Image.
Start with the printer and connection
Before changing PDF settings, make sure the job is going to the printer you intend to use and that the printer is ready. Adobe recommends checking the printer connection and restarting the printer when a PDF will not print. Adobe’s PDF-printing troubleshooting page covers these initial checks.
- Confirm the correct printer is selected in the print dialog and that it is available.
- Check the printer for paper, ink or toner, open covers, and paper jams.
- For a USB connection, make sure the cable is seated securely. Connect it directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub.
- Power-cycle the printer, wait for it to become ready, then try the job again.
Find out whether the problem is the PDF or the printer
Print a test page or another document, then try the PDF in a different viewer if one is available. This separates a printer-wide problem from one tied to a particular file or app. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance recommends testing another printer and refreshing the PDF when the issue appears file-specific; Microsoft’s Windows printer guidance covers printer and queue problems.
- Other documents also fail: check the printer connection and status, the operating system’s print queue, and the printer driver.
- Only this PDF fails: try a fresh copy of the file or another viewer, then use Acrobat’s image-printing workaround if the file still fails there.
- The page prints but looks wrong: check paper size, orientation, scaling, and the print preview.
Fix a stuck Windows print job
If other documents are also stuck or failing on a Windows printer, inspect the queue before repeatedly resending the PDF. Microsoft documents steps for detecting printers, clearing stuck jobs, and addressing the print spooler in its printer connection and printing troubleshooting guide.

- Open the printer queue for the printer you selected and look for paused or stuck jobs.
- Cancel the affected job if it is blocked, then try printing again once the queue is clear.
- If jobs remain stuck or the printer is still unavailable, follow Microsoft’s current instructions for restarting the print workflow or spooler for your Windows version.
Queue and spooler steps depend on the Windows version and printer setup; use Microsoft’s instructions rather than applying a generic service change.
Correct a PDF that is cropped, too small, or misoriented
A job can complete while the result is still wrong because the PDF’s page dimensions do not match the selected paper or tray. In the print dialog, confirm that paper size and orientation match the document and printer. Check the preview before printing; use fit-to-page or another scaling option when the page is otherwise cut off or prints at an unexpected size. Repair a PDF that prints blank or will not print in Acrobat
If other files print normally, get a clean copy of the problem PDF: download it again or copy it again from its source, then save it locally. In Acrobat, use Save As and give the copy a simple filename. Adobe recommends refreshing or saving a local copy before trying further file-specific fixes. Adobe’s desktop troubleshooting instructions also document the following option:
- In Acrobat, open the PDF and choose Print.
- Open Advanced in the print dialog.
- Select Print as Image, confirm the dialog, and print.
Print as Image sends page content as images rather than relying on the usual rendering path. It can resolve some output problems, but printing may take longer; it is a workaround, not proof of what caused the failure. Adobe’s archived Reader documentation describes the feature as printing pages as bitmap images: Adobe Reader printing help. If the option is unavailable or the failure persists, Adobe also documents Preflight syntax analysis for problematic PDFs in its desktop troubleshooting page.

Update the printer driver if the problem affects more than one file
When multiple documents fail or the printer is not behaving correctly across apps, identify the exact printer model and operating system, then get the driver from that model’s manufacturer’s official support site. Install it using the manufacturer’s instructions, restart the computer if directed, and test printing again. Adobe and Microsoft both identify printer drivers as a troubleshooting area; driver choices and installation steps vary by manufacturer, model, and operating system. Start with Adobe’s printer troubleshooting advice or Microsoft’s Windows steps, then use the printer maker’s support page for the actual download.
