If PCSX2 is slow, stuttering, or producing distorted audio, first check its Speed counter while the problem is happening. That tells you whether the game itself is running below its target speed; audio problems can be a symptom of that slowdown rather than a separate sound-device fault. Update PCSX2, capture its performance counters, and then test one likely cause at a time.
Measure performance during the slowdown
Update PCSX2, load the affected game, and reproduce the same section where performance drops. Open Settings > Graphics > OSD and enable all performance counters. Note or screenshot the readings while the problem is occurring. PCSX2’s Performance Issues guide identifies Speed as the game’s running speed; compare it with the video output FPS rather than treating FPS alone as a complete diagnosis.
If Speed is below the game’s target, the emulation is running slowly. Audio that slows, crackles, or falls out of sync may follow from that reduced speed. If Speed remains at target while sound is wrong, the slowdown diagnosis is less likely to explain the audio symptom, so inspect the current version’s audio options and game-specific guidance instead.
Rule out power, workload, and driver issues
PCSX2 is hardware-intensive, particularly on the processor, so check whether your system is limiting performance before changing emulator settings. The project’s performance guidance recommends a high-performance power plan or equivalent and notes that NVIDIA WhisperMode on some laptops can cap game frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- On a laptop, connect power and disable battery-saving restrictions for the test. Select a high-performance power mode if available.
- If your laptop has NVIDIA graphics, check whether WhisperMode is enabled and limiting frame rate.
- Confirm that the PC meets PCSX2’s system requirements, and close demanding background tasks for a comparison.
- If PCSX2 crashes when opening Settings or starting a game, the Windows troubleshooting guide flags outdated GPU drivers as a possible cause. Update drivers for all GPUs in a laptop, including integrated graphics.
These checks can uncover a system-side limit, but none guarantees a fix for every game or configuration.
Keep graphics settings conservative and test per game
If you are unsure which renderer to use, leave the Graphics API on Automatic, as recommended by PCSX2’s graphics API and Game Properties guide. Vulkan is described as fast across platforms, but the guide notes instability on Intel integrated graphics and the need for up-to-date drivers. OpenGL has vendor-specific behavior and is described as slower than Vulkan; Direct3D 12 and 11 have different accuracy and performance characteristics. These are broad comparisons, not a promise that one API will be fastest or most stable on every PC and game.

If a title has a known issue, check its compatibility information and wiki entry, then make changes under that title’s Game Properties rather than changing the global configuration. Change one setting at a time, retest the same gameplay section, and undo a change if it introduces glitches elsewhere in that game. The General Issues guide also recommends checking the game’s Verify action in its properties if a black screen or failure to load suggests an incomplete or corrupted disc dump.
Check the location of the game image
If the game ISO is stored on a USB-connected drive, storage latency is worth testing. PCSX2 explains that ISO access resembles PS2 disc access and that frequent small USB reads can impose substantial latency. Its performance guidance recommends SATA or M.2 storage instead.

For a controlled comparison, move the ISO to internal SATA or M.2 storage and replay the same section. This is a targeted test for a game image on USB; an SSD is not a general remedy for CPU-limited emulation, graphics API problems, or every kind of stutter.
Handle audio glitches after checking Speed
Check Speed before adjusting audio synchronization. Current PCSX2 performance documentation provides Speed as the way to see whether a game is running below target. The more detailed descriptions of particular synchronization modes come from older PCSX2 forum guides: the 2012 configuration guide describes TimeStretch as maintaining audio/video synchronization, with audio potentially slowing when emulation is below full speed. A 2014 troubleshooting FAQ describes Async Mix as letting audio play independently, while warning it can cause hangs or crashes in some games.
Those are legacy descriptions, not assurance that current interface labels or recommendations are unchanged. Consult the audio controls in your installed PCSX2 version and any game-specific notes. Avoid using an independent audio mode to mask low emulation speed without checking that the game remains stable.

Collect useful information if the problem persists
When the issue remains after these tests, provide PCSX2 helpers with a reproducible description and diagnostic files. Follow the current Diagnosing & Reporting instructions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose Tools > Enable File Logging.
- Restart PCSX2, then reproduce the slowdown, stutter, or glitch.
- Close PCSX2 and retrieve
emulog.txtfrom the logs directory. Do not reopen PCSX2 before collecting it; a restart can remove useful information. - For a graphical glitch, include a GS Dump as directed by the reporting guide.
Include the game title, the section where the issue occurs, your PCSX2 version, and the OSD readings captured during the problem. That helps distinguish an emulation-speed issue from a game-specific rendering or audio fault.
