For a Steam crash, first install the game’s available update; D-Pad Studio’s May 2022 announcements document a fix for one specific backtracking crash and a historical Steam-only option to launch the pre-update version. For a missing Nintendo Switch save, use Nintendo’s general save-data checks: confirm the selected user, check for updates and corrupted data, and restore an eligible cloud backup if available. The right steps depend on your platform and symptom; the sources do not establish one current fix for every Owlboy version or store.
Fixing Owlboy crashes on Steam or PC
- In your Steam library, check Owlboy for an available update and install it. Note your operating system and where in the game the crash happens.
- If the crash happens while backtracking, compare it with D-Pad Studio’s May 25, 2022 announcement. The studio said that patch fixed a crash that could prevent a return to the final dungeon and might improve other crash or stability issues on some PCs. This is a historical patch note, not confirmation that every present-day crash is fixed: D-Pad Studio’s Owlboy patch announcements.
- If you still experience crashes on Steam, D-Pad Studio’s May 4, 2022 announcement described launching the pre-2022-update XNA-based build by choosing “Play Owlboy (original version)” at startup, instead of “Play Owlboy.” Treat this as a historical diagnostic or workaround option, not a guaranteed repair. The announcement does not establish that the option is available through GOG or on consoles: D-Pad Studio’s Owlboy patch announcements.
If those steps do not resolve a PC crash, contact Owlboy support through Steam. Steam lists Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux for the game; those storefront details are not a guarantee of crash-free play on a machine that meets the listed minimum requirements.
Check a missing or unreadable Nintendo Switch save
The following are Nintendo’s general Switch save-data steps, not Owlboy-specific troubleshooting. Before changing users or accounts, note that save data belongs to its user account: deleting a user account also deletes that user’s associated save data.
- Confirm that you launched the game under the Switch user profile that owns the save.
- Check for a Nintendo Switch system update and an Owlboy software update using the console’s update options.
- Open System Settings > Data Management and use the option to check Owlboy for corrupt data.
- If Owlboy supports Save Data Cloud for your account and you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, check whether a backup is available to download. Cloud recovery is conditional; it is not guaranteed for every game, account, or missing save.
See Nintendo’s instructions for missing or corrupted Switch save data for its full guidance. Do not delete a user profile as a troubleshooting shortcut.

When an Owlboy update fails
Use the update mechanism for the platform where you own the game, then record the platform and installed game version if the update still fails. The available source information does not confirm a current Owlboy version number, a store-by-store update procedure, or the current patch status on Switch. Avoid uninstalling the game, overwriting saves, or editing save files unless your platform or D-Pad Studio provides a verified procedure. For unresolved PC issues, use the official Owlboy support route listed on Steam.
