Microsoft says a reset can fix some sync issues without deleting files or data, but it disconnects sync connections, clears app settings, and triggers a full sync.
Choose the right OneDrive recovery option
Pausing, unlinking and relinking, and resetting solve different problems. Use this comparison before changing the app:

Try these steps in order
- Decide whether you need a temporary stop. If you only need OneDrive to stop syncing for a while, pause it or quit the app rather than resetting it. Follow Microsoft’s pause and resume instructions to select a duration or quit OneDrive.
- For a desktop connection problem, unlink and reconnect. Use Microsoft’s unlink and relink procedure. When setup recognizes your existing OneDrive folder, choose Use this folder. Allow syncing to complete; changes made while the folder was disconnected should sync after reconnection.
- Reset only if syncing still fails. Use the instructions for your device below. A reset requires setup again, disconnects sync connections, and starts a full sync; it is not just a temporary pause.
- Check the specific cause if the problem persists. On a Mac, verify available Microsoft storage and check Keychain sign-in credentials. For a managed work or school account, ask your IT administrator if account access or organizational policy may be involved.
Reset OneDrive on Windows
For the OneDrive desktop app, Microsoft’s documented reset method uses the Run dialog. After the command, launch OneDrive manually and complete setup.
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Enter
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /resetand select OK. - If Windows cannot find that path, try
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. If that also cannot be found, tryC:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OneDriveonedrive.exe /reset. - Open OneDrive from the Start menu and complete setup for the account or accounts you use.
A reset disconnects all sync connections, including personal and work or school connections. If you previously chose to sync only certain folders, select those folders again after syncing completes. A full sync can take time. See Microsoft’s Windows reset guidance.

Reset the OneDrive Store app
If you use the Store app rather than the desktop app, open Run with Windows key + R, enter apps:onedrive, and select OK. Open App settings and select Reset. Then reopen OneDrive and complete setup. Microsoft’s reset page covers this route as well.
Reset OneDrive on a Mac
- Quit OneDrive.
- In Applications, locate OneDrive, control-click it, and choose Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents > Resources, then run
ResetOneDriveApp.command. For the standalone app, runResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command. - Start OneDrive and complete setup. When prompted, choose the previous sync location so unchanged files do not need to be downloaded again.
After syncing, reselect any folders you had previously excluded from sync. If the reset commands are missing, Microsoft advises updating OneDrive because some older app versions do not include them. Follow Microsoft’s Mac reset instructions.

If Mac syncing still fails
- Check storage. Microsoft says exceeding your storage prevents new uploads, edits, or syncs. Repeated resets will not address that condition.
- Clear cached sign-in credentials. Microsoft’s Mac troubleshooting guidance includes clearing OneDrive sign-in credentials in Keychain Access.
- Consider organization controls. If this is a work or school account, contact your IT administrator when access or policy settings may be involved; Microsoft notes administrators can restrict some Mac backup features.

Reset OneDrive on Android or iPhone
Android
Microsoft’s reset guidance is to clear the OneDrive app’s data and cache, uninstall the app, and reinstall it from Google Play. The exact Android settings path for clearing app data can vary by device and Android version; use your device’s app settings to find OneDrive’s storage controls, then follow Microsoft’s current reset instructions.

iOS
In OneDrive, go to Profile > Settings > Account > Reset. If the issue continues, Microsoft advises uninstalling and reinstalling the app. App screen labels can change; consult the current Microsoft reset page if your interface differs.
Check common limits and error messages
Windows 7, 8, or 8.1
Microsoft says the OneDrive sync app is no longer supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. A reset cannot restore support for an unsupported operating system. Check Microsoft’s OneDrive known issues and support information.

Error 0x80010007
Microsoft describes 0x80010007 as a sync difficulty and recommends unlinking OneDrive, then running setup again. Use the OneDrive error-code guidance for this code rather than treating it as proof that a reset is required.
What a reset changes—and what it does not
Microsoft says, “You won’t lose files or data by resetting OneDrive.” That reassurance describes the reset itself; the same guidance says reset disconnects sync connections and initiates a full sync. It clears app settings, so setup and any previously restricted folder selections need attention afterward. Keep the distinction clear: reset is a disruptive app recovery step, unlinking reconnects an account, and pausing only stops sync temporarily. Microsoft’s reset guidance.
