If one earbud is silent, check its charge and seating first. If it is merely quieter than the other, inspect the speaker mesh and center your device’s left/right audio balance. Then check fit and Bluetooth before using reset instructions made specifically for your earbud model.
First, identify the problem
Notice whether the affected earbud is completely silent, much quieter or muffled, missing from the charging or connection display, or cutting in and out. Silence points first to charging or connection; low volume calls for mesh and balance checks; intermittent sound makes fit and connection worth checking. These symptoms can have different causes, so work through the relevant checks rather than starting with a reset.
Check charging and contact
- Make sure the case has power. Charge it if needed.
- Reseat both earbuds. Put each one in its correct case position and confirm it sits securely on the charging contacts. Check whether the case or companion app shows each side charging.
- Let them charge, then test again. Charging time varies by product. For AirPods, Apple Support’s AirPods procedure says to charge both for 30 seconds, open the case near an iPhone or iPad, and check each AirPod’s charge status. That 30-second instruction is specific to AirPods, not a universal charging time.
To isolate an AirPod that remains silent, Apple says to leave the other one in the case and test the affected AirPod by itself. If it works alone, charge both briefly in the case and test them together again.
If one earbud is quiet or muffled
Inspect the speaker mesh
Look for visible debris on the speaker mesh. Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact model; do not poke the mesh or apply liquid unless its manufacturer explicitly permits it. Apple’s AirPods guidance also says to check the microphone and speaker meshes and remove ear tips where applicable before following its cleaning directions. Samsung identifies debris or earwax on Galaxy Buds’ speaker mesh as a possible cause, and advises checking that tips are properly attached and the same size.

Center left/right audio balance
A device’s accessibility settings can shift sound toward one side. Put the slider in the middle:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Balance.
- Samsung Galaxy device: Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements → Left/right sound balance. Galaxy Wearable may also provide a balance control.
Labels and controls can vary by operating-system version, app, and earbud model. Samsung notes that left/right balance support is not available for every Galaxy Buds model.

Check fit and Bluetooth connection
Make sure the earbuds are fitted securely and that any ear tips are attached properly. Confirm Bluetooth is on, bring the playback device close, and pause then resume audio. If the earbuds appear connected incorrectly, reconnect them using the instructions for that model.
Interference or a connection problem can make audio unreliable. Sony’s WF-1000XM6 troubleshooting guidance includes moving the headphones and playback device closer and deleting Bluetooth device information before reconnecting. Those steps are specific to the WF-1000XM6; use your own product’s manual or official support page for exact menu steps.

Use the correct model-specific recovery steps
If charging, balance, mesh, fit, and connection checks do not help, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact product. There is no universal earbud reset sequence. A reset can erase pairing state or settings, so check what it changes before proceeding.
- AirPods: Apple says to reset the AirPods if one still does not work after its charging and individual-earbud test. Follow the reset steps on its AirPods support page.
- Galaxy Buds: Samsung describes recoupling the left and right earbuds, with steps that vary by generation. Some newer models use a case button; some earlier models use simultaneous touch-and-hold. Samsung also warns that different software versions can prevent connection mode. Do not apply one generation’s sequence to another.
- Sony WF-C710N: Sony’s WF-C710N troubleshooting guidance lists a software update and full charge before reset and initialization. If the fault remains, Sony directs users to an authorized service center.
When to seek service or consider replacement
If the earbud still will not charge, connect, or produce sound after the official recovery steps for its model, check warranty coverage and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. If the problem follows the same earbud when you connect to another source device, that helps distinguish an earbud-side fault from a balance or Bluetooth setting on one phone; it does not by itself establish what part has failed.

Some products may offer a compatible single-earbud replacement, but availability, pairing requirements, and service options depend on the model and region. Before buying a replacement bud or a new pair, check warranty coverage, compatibility, fit, service cost, and whether a single-bud replacement is available. The cited support guidance does not establish a universal replacement part or option.
