If OBS Studio says “Encoding overloaded,” start by reducing the work your computer has to do: on Windows, try running OBS as administrator; limit the game’s frame rate or graphics load; lower OBS output resolution or frame rate; and simplify demanding scenes. Make one change at a time, then check whether the warning and lag improve. If the problem is actually network dropped frames, troubleshoot your connection and bitrate instead.

First identify what is falling behind

“Encoding overloaded” points to OBS struggling to keep up with encoding or related system work. OBS also needs GPU resources to render and composite scenes, so a GPU bottleneck can contribute even when the warning mentions encoding. Check OBS’s status indicators and counters before changing settings.

  • Encoding or rendering performance: Investigate system resource pressure, game load, OBS output settings, and scene complexity.
  • Network dropped frames: If the dropped-frames counter is climbing and the connection indicator is yellow or red, your connection to the streaming service may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Follow the network troubleshooting guidance in the OBS Help Portal.

Both problems can occur at once. A network issue is not fixed by lowering scene complexity, and an encoding bottleneck is not fixed by changing the internet connection alone. OBS’s encoding performance guide covers the performance side.

Try the quickest GPU-load fixes

Run OBS as administrator on Windows

Close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS. Treat it as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix; it applies to Windows, not macOS.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Reduce competition for the GPU

Close or pause other GPU-heavy applications you opened. On Windows, use Task Manager to look for competing GPU activity; on macOS, use Activity Monitor. The exact labels vary by operating-system version, but the goal is to find software using substantial graphics resources while OBS is active.

Limit the game’s frame rate or graphics load

In the game’s settings, cap its frame rate at or below your monitor’s refresh rate, enable V-Sync, or lower demanding graphics settings. A game that renders as many frames as possible can leave too little GPU capacity for OBS to compose scenes.

Lower OBS output demands

In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 FPS is not working reliably, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 FPS. Lower output resolution or FPS can reduce the work required to produce each stream or recording, though it also reduces detail or motion smoothness.

Changing the Base (Canvas) Resolution is a more disruptive option. OBS reserves that step for severe resource constraints: sources may need to be repositioned or resized after the canvas changes. Try output settings first, and adjust the canvas only if the system still cannot keep up.

Simplify scenes, sources, and effects

Every active scene element can add work to rendering. Temporarily disable or remove expensive items to identify whether one is contributing, then test OBS before changing something else.

  • Reduce the resolution of capture or media sources when their full detail is not needed.
  • Disable demanding filters while diagnosing the issue.
  • Reduce the number or dimensions of browser sources. If an overlay is static, consider using an image source instead of a live browser page when that suits the overlay.
  • Keep scene collections focused rather than loading unnecessary sources and effects.

Re-enable items one at a time if needed. This helps isolate the source of the load on your particular system rather than assuming every browser source or filter is equally expensive.

Choose an encoder that fits your hardware

A hardware encoder can move encoding work away from the CPU to a dedicated component, which OBS generally recommends for performance when a compatible encoder is available. It is not automatically the best choice for every machine: availability depends on hardware and operating system, and older hardware-encoder generations can produce lower image quality than software encoding at the same bitrate.

Encoder family Availability listed by OBS What to consider
NVENC Windows and Linux Requires compatible NVIDIA hardware. Image quality depends on encoder generation and settings.
AMD AMF Windows and Linux Requires compatible AMD hardware.
Intel QSV Windows and Linux Requires compatible Intel hardware.
Apple VideoToolbox Apple Silicon and Intel Macs OBS notes streaming limitations on Intel Macs.

These platform listings come from OBS’s hardware encoding guide; check it for current compatibility and instructions for your device. If you are recording with x264 and CPU load is the constraint, OBS’s recording guide lists the veryfast CPU Usage Preset as a baseline. That is a recording recommendation, not a universal streaming fix.

OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated November 30, 2023, gives recording baselines of x264 CRF 16–23 with the veryfast preset, and NVENC Constant QP 16–23 with preset P5. These values are for recording; do not treat them as settings guaranteed to fix a streaming overload warning.

The OBS-hosted NVIDIA NVENC guide covers OBS Studio 29.1 and later. It advises reducing preset demands when running multiple encodes if the encoder is overloaded. Its platform codec notes reflect YouTube and Twitch capabilities as of May 2023; check current platform requirements before relying on those details.

Change one variable at a time and check the result

  1. Note whether the issue occurs while recording, streaming, or both, and check OBS’s relevant counters.
  2. Make one adjustment, such as capping the game frame rate or lowering output FPS.
  3. Repeat the same recording or streaming workload and see whether the warning, lag, or relevant counter changes.
  4. If the problem remains, test the next likely cause: another GPU-heavy app, a demanding source or filter, or an encoder mismatch.
  5. If settings changes do not identify the bottleneck, gather your operating system, CPU and GPU, OBS log, selected encoder, output resolution and FPS, scene complexity, and whether the issue affects recording, streaming, or both. That information is needed to diagnose a system-specific cause.
