Either the NVIDIA installer failed, or Windows is reporting a problem with the graphics device through a Device Manager error code. Work out which one you have, confirm you downloaded the right package, then follow the step that matches your error message.
Step 1: Record exactly what failed
Before you change anything, write down the details. Microsoft assigns different causes and next steps to different Device Manager codes, so a vague description sends you down the wrong path.
- The full text of the NVIDIA installer message, and any error code it shows.
- Whether the installer exits with an error or hangs partway.
- Your exact GPU model and Windows version.
- Whether the problem started after a Windows update or a driver update.
Then check what Windows reports. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA GPU, choose Properties, and read the Device status box on the General tab. If it shows a code, such as Code 43, use the code-specific section below. Do not treat Codes 38, 39, 43 and 52 as interchangeable.
Step 2: Confirm you have the right driver package
Download from NVIDIA’s official driver page. Choose the product type, product series, product, operating system and driver type (Game Ready or Studio). Then open the release page and check that it lists both your Windows version and your GPU. A mismatched package is a common and easily avoided cause of a failed install.

Notebook GPUs
NVIDIA says its Game Ready and Studio drivers can install on supported notebook GPUs. It also says the laptop maker provides certified drivers for the specific notebook, and that you should check the maker’s site for recommended updates. On a laptop, look at both sources, and prefer the maker’s certified package if the generic one fails.
Treat version numbers as examples
As an example of what a release page shows, NVIDIA’s page for GeForce Game Ready Driver 617.14 lists a release date of September 22, 2026, with support for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Driver versions, supported products and OS support change often, so check the current release for your own GPU rather than copying a version number from an article.
Microsoft also warns against getting drivers from any website other than the hardware manufacturer’s official site. Avoid “driver updater” sites and mirrors, even when the official download is slow.

Step 3: Retry the installer with minimal changes
- Get a fresh copy. If the file may be incomplete, download it again from NVIDIA’s official page. NVIDIA’s installation hints advise against using download-accelerator utilities.
- Reduce interference. The same hints say not to run virus protection in the background during installation. This is NVIDIA’s guidance and not a guaranteed fix. If you pause your security software, do it only for the install and turn it back on straight afterward.
- Try Custom (Advanced). If the installer offers Express and Custom (Advanced), Custom lets you pick components. In NVIDIA’s documented installer flows it also includes a Perform a clean installation checkbox.
The clean-installation option resets NVIDIA settings and profiles in the documented versions. If you have custom control panel settings, note them first. NVIDIA’s detailed walkthroughs of these screens are legacy documents, so the labels and components in your installer release may differ.
Step 4: Follow the Windows path for your error
Code 38
Microsoft says a previous instance of the driver may still be loaded. Its recommendation is to restart the computer.
Code 39
Microsoft says the driver may be corrupted or missing. It recommends manually reinstalling the device driver.

Code 43
This means Windows stopped the device because the device reported problems. Microsoft’s general guidance starts with updating or reinstalling the driver. If that does not work, check the device documentation or contact the manufacturer. The code alone does not prove the GPU is faulty.
Code 52
Windows cannot verify the driver’s digital signature. Microsoft recommends getting the latest driver from the hardware manufacturer, or contacting it.
The problem began after an update
Microsoft’s driver instructions include rolling the driver back. In Device Manager, open the GPU’s Properties, go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver. If the button is greyed out, Windows has no earlier driver to return to, so use one of the options below.

Update, uninstall and reinstall
Microsoft describes three routes in Device Manager:
- Right-click the adapter and choose Update driver, then let Windows search automatically. Alternatively, browse to an official driver you have already downloaded.
- If that fails, right-click the adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart the PC. Windows will try to reinstall a driver on startup. Then run NVIDIA’s installer again.
If the screen goes blank
NVIDIA’s older documentation describes a brief screen flicker, blank moment or resolution change during driver installation as normal. Give the installer a few minutes before assuming it has failed.
If the screen stays blank, you have a Windows recovery problem and not an installer problem. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting page covers the steps: start Windows in Safe Mode, then update or roll back the graphics driver in Device Manager. If the problem began recently, use System Restore. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for getting into recovery rather than improvising with repeated forced shutdowns.

Installer problem or device problem?

If nothing works: collect details for support
The official sources do not name one root cause or one final remedy for every installer failure, so at this point you need support. Gather the following for NVIDIA or your PC maker:
- GPU and PC model, and whether it is a desktop or notebook.
- Windows version and build.
- The driver version you tried to install.
- The full installer error text and any Device Manager code.
- Recent Windows and driver update history.
For managed or server systems, NVIDIA’s data-center Windows driver guide documents silent installation and logging. That can help administrators capture diagnostics, but it applies mainly to those products and not to ordinary GeForce installs.
