If you’re not receiving verification code texts on iPhone, first check Messages’ Unknown Senders and Spam filters—an SMS may arrive without appearing in your main conversation list. If it is not there, check whether ordinary texts work: that helps distinguish an iPhone filtering issue from a carrier or one-service delivery problem.

1. Check filtered messages first

  1. Open Messages and tap Filters, if shown.
  2. Check Unknown Senders and Spam, if those folders are available in your region and iOS version.
  3. If you find the code, mark the sender as known or restore the message from Spam as appropriate. Use the newest code you requested; earlier codes may have expired.

Menu labels and filter availability vary by iOS version and region. A missing notification does not necessarily mean the text was not delivered.

2. Review unknown-sender notifications and blocked senders

Apple provides a control to allow notifications from some unknown senders, including time-sensitive messages such as verification codes. On versions with the newer settings, review Settings → Apps → Messages → Unknown Senders and its notification categories. The exact controls differ across iOS releases and regions.

Also review blocked contacts for the service’s sending number. Apple says messages from a blocked sender are not delivered. A carrier can separately block or restrict short-code messages, regardless of the iPhone’s contact settings.

3. Request a fresh code or try an offered alternative

Request a new code once and use the most recent one. Repeated requests can cause confusion or trigger a service’s cooldown. Use another delivery method only if the service offers it, such as an authenticator app, email, backup code, or phone call.

For Apple Account sign-in, tap Didn’t get a code? or Can’t get to your devices? when available, then request a text or phone call to a trusted number. If you cannot access a trusted device or number, Apple Account recovery may be required; Apple says it can take several days or longer, and contacting Apple cannot speed up the process. These Apple-specific options do not apply to every service.

4. Check whether ordinary SMS works

SMS requires mobile-network service. Send yourself a normal text from another phone. If it does not arrive, check cellular signal and make sure Airplane Mode is off, then contact your carrier to investigate SMS service. Wi‑Fi alone does not replace cellular SMS.

What you observe What to check next
One service’s codes fail Ask that service to confirm the number on your account and whether its message was sent. Check for sender-specific blocking.
Codes from several services fail, but ordinary texts arrive Ask your carrier whether automated or short-code messages are blocked or restricted for your line.
Ordinary texts also fail Ask your carrier to check mobile-network SMS service and any account restrictions.

These are diagnostic clues, not definitive causes. Carrier procedures and short-code policies vary.

5. Check the correct phone number and line

Check the digits shown on the sign-in or recovery page. If you changed numbers, switched carriers, or use more than one line, the service may have an old number saved or the code may be going to another line. In Settings → Cellular, confirm that the intended SIM or eSIM line is turned on.

iSYFIX SIM Card Tray Eject Pin Removal Tool, 10 Pack
  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs

If you recently changed carriers or activated a SIM or eSIM, ask the carrier whether the line is provisioned for SMS and whether message routing needs attention. Do not delete an eSIM plan simply to troubleshoot texts.

6. Update iOS or carrier settings if needed

To check for an iOS update, open Settings → General → Software Update. To check for a carrier-settings update, open Settings → General → About and wait briefly for a prompt. These checks may help with network issues, but they cannot guarantee that a missing verification text will be fixed.

FAQ

Why am I receiving normal texts but not verification codes on my iPhone?

Automated or short-code messages may be handled differently from ordinary texts. Check Unknown Senders and Spam, then ask your carrier whether short-code or automated SMS is restricted. If only one service’s codes fail, contact that service too.

Do verification codes require iMessage?

No. A code sent by text uses SMS rather than iMessage. iMessage being unavailable does not by itself explain why SMS codes are missing.

Why did I get the code but no notification?

The message may be in Unknown Senders or Spam, or notifications for unknown senders may not be allowed. Check the Messages filters and the unknown-sender notification settings available on your iOS version.

Can I get an Apple Account verification code by phone call?

Apple offers text or phone-call delivery to a trusted number in supported sign-in flows. Tap Didn’t get a code? or Can’t get to your devices? and follow the available options. Other services may not offer calls.

Should I turn off Wi‑Fi to receive a verification code?

Usually no. Ordinary SMS depends on mobile-network service, not Wi‑Fi. Turning Wi‑Fi off is not a general fix for a cellular SMS delivery problem.

The Bottom Line

Start by checking Messages’ Unknown Senders and Spam folders, then determine whether ordinary SMS works. If only one service’s codes fail, check its account record and delivery system; if multiple services fail, ask your carrier about automated or short-code messages. iOS filters and carrier policies vary, so there is no single fix for every iPhone.
