First identify the game and both players’ platforms, then determine whether the invite is for voice chat, a game session, or an in-game lobby. Those are different invitation flows, and the right fix depends on whether the invite never arrives, cannot be accepted, or fails when the recipient tries to join.
Start with the symptom and invitation type
Ask the other player which game they are using and which device or platform each of you is on. Then clarify what the invitation is supposed to open:
- Voice party: a voice-chat group, which may be separate from the game session.
- Game session or group: a platform-level invitation to join a friend’s game.
- In-game lobby: an invitation created through that game’s own multiplayer or social menu.
Note whether the invite is missing, appears but cannot be accepted, or is accepted but leads to a failed join. That distinction helps separate delivery and privacy problems from session eligibility or connectivity problems.
Use an invitation route supported by the platform and game
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch, received invitations are available from the profile’s Online Play Invites area. Nintendo says that the Switch User Page menu cannot invite a specific person from the friend list to a multiplayer game. If that route is unavailable, check whether the game provides its own invite or join option. See Nintendo’s Switch invitation guidance.

For supported software on Nintendo Switch 2, invitations can also be handled through the C Menu; received invitations are also accessible from the profile’s Online Play Invites area. PlayStation 5
On PS5, a game invitation can be sent from a player profile, Game Base, or the game itself. Sony’s profile and Game Base instructions apply to PS5 games; an individual game’s own invite flow may differ. Received invitations appear as notifications. Depending on the game, a player may also be able to join from a friend’s profile or the Play With Friends card. See Sony’s PS5 game-joining instructions.

Do not treat a voice-party invite as a game-session invite: PS5 voice parties have their own open and closed party behavior. Sony explains that flow in its guide to PS5 party voice chat.
Other platforms
Invitation paths are game- and platform-specific. The official guidance covered here does not establish current consumer Xbox menu steps, so use the game’s own support page or the platform’s current support instructions rather than assuming a PlayStation or Nintendo path applies.

If the invitation never arrives
- Confirm the sender used the right route. Try the game’s own multiplayer or social menu if a system-level invitation is unavailable or does not work.
- Check the correct inbox. On Switch and Switch 2, look in the profile’s Online Play Invites area rather than relying only on a notification or another system menu.
- Check blocked-player status on PS5. Sony says a blocked player in the group or party will not receive the game invitation.
- Review communication and multiplayer privacy controls. On PlayStation, check whether privacy settings allow communication, multiplayer, and cross-play game invitations. A family manager, parent, or guardian may manage settings for a child account or limit which settings the child can change. See Sony’s PlayStation privacy settings guide.
If the invite arrives but cannot be accepted or joined
Check whether the recipient is eligible to enter the intended session, not just whether the invite was delivered. On PS5, Sony notes that the game must be installed and the group must have an open place for a direct join. Some games may offer a request-to-join flow instead; use that option if shown rather than assuming the session is directly joinable. The available conditions can vary by game.
On Switch, confirm that the game supports the invitation behavior being attempted. A system-level invite route that is not supported by the title will not become valid simply because the players are friends.

If only cross-platform invitations fail
If same-platform invites work but invitations between different device types do not, check whether the specific game supports cross-play between those platforms and whether both players have the relevant in-game settings enabled. Cross-play support can vary by title and configuration.
Some invite and join failures originate in the game or service configuration rather than a player’s console settings. Microsoft’s developer-facing Game Development Kit troubleshooting guidance describes issues involving cross-play configuration, session ownership and invite permissions, device availability, and audience restrictions. Those are developer-side causes; players should not try to edit developer configuration. Check the game publisher’s support guidance for the title.

Test the network when joining or matchmaking fails
Network troubleshooting is most relevant when the invite works but the game cannot connect, matchmake, or complete the join. Nintendo recommends testing the console’s Internet connection and noting the NAT type, download speed, and upload speed. Retest after each change so you can tell whether it helped. See Nintendo’s online connection and matchmaking troubleshooting.
- If the console reports a non-optimal NAT type, peer-to-peer connections may be affected. Ask your network administrator or ISP for help as appropriate; consult the router manufacturer about firmware or reset questions.
- If the console is already connected by Ethernet and the cable may be damaged, try another cable to check whether the original is the problem. This is a diagnostic for a suspect wired connection, not a general invitation fix.
- Record the connection-test result before and after each change. If the failure is limited to one game or one friend while other online play works, include that detail when contacting support.
What to send support if it still fails
Contact the game publisher or platform support for a title-specific or account-specific problem. Include the details that distinguish an invite failure from a connection failure:
