Firefox can “not work” in several different ways on Windows 11: it may refuse to open, close immediately, freeze, display broken pages, or open normally but fail to load websites. The correct fix depends on which of these is happening.
Work through the least destructive checks first. Troubleshoot Mode, a graphics-driver check, and extension isolation can often identify the cause without removing your profile data. Avoid uninstalling Firefox as a first step: a normal reinstall usually leaves the damaged profile untouched.
1. Identify whether Firefox is hanging or crashing
If Firefox remains open but stops responding, that is a hang. If it closes unexpectedly, that is a crash. A page or individual Firefox process can also stop responding without the entire browser closing. These cases need slightly different investigation.
- Firefox is open but frozen: continue with Troubleshoot Mode and extension checks.
- Firefox closes unexpectedly: check crash reports and hardware acceleration.
- Firefox will not open at all: try the Windows-specific Troubleshoot Mode procedure, then check error messages, the profile, and the installation.
- Firefox opens but websites do not load: check extensions, security software, and Firefox’s graphics and network-related behavior.
2. Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode
Firefox now calls this diagnostic feature Troubleshoot Mode; older instructions may call it “Safe Mode.” It temporarily disables extensions and themes, switches to the default theme, turns off hardware acceleration and WebGL, ignores userChrome and userContent customizations, disables certain window and sidebar settings, and disables the JavaScript JIT compiler. It does not permanently reset your Firefox preferences.

If Firefox is open
- Click the Menu button.
- Choose Help.
- Select Troubleshoot Mode….
- Click Restart in the Restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode? dialog.
- Click Open in the Open Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode? dialog.
If Firefox will not open normally
- Close every visible Firefox window.
- Hold Shift while starting Firefox from the Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
- When the Troubleshoot Mode window appears, click Open.
If Firefox works in Troubleshoot Mode but not in its normal startup, the likely cause is one of the items that mode disables: an extension, theme, hardware acceleration, or another customization. If the same problem remains, those items are unlikely to be responsible. Changed preferences, damaged profile data, Windows, graphics drivers, security software, or Firefox program files are still possible causes.
Do not click Refresh Firefox by mistake if you only want to test the browser. Open starts the temporary diagnostic session; Refresh Firefox makes permanent profile changes.
3. Disable extensions to find the faulty one
A browser extension can cause freezes, crashes, blank pages, broken menus, or problems on particular websites. If Firefox works in Troubleshoot Mode, disable extensions in the normal browser session and test them individually.
- Start Firefox normally.
- Click the Menu button and choose Add-ons and themes.
- Select Extensions.
- Turn off every extension.
- Restart Firefox and test the problem.
- Re-enable one extension at a time, restarting or retesting after each one.
When the problem returns, the last extension enabled is the likely cause. Leave it disabled, update it, or remove it. If disabling all extensions does not help, repeat the test with the active theme or continue to the next diagnostic step.

4. Turn off hardware acceleration
Firefox uses the graphics processor for some rendering tasks. A graphics processor and driver combination can cause crashes, missing content, or text-rendering problems when hardware acceleration is enabled. Updating the graphics driver is the better long-term solution, but disabling acceleration is a useful workaround.
- Click the Menu button and choose Settings.
- On the General page, scroll to Performance.
- Clear Use recommended performance settings.
- Clear Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Click the Menu button, then choose Exit.
- Start Firefox again and test it.
If Firefox becomes stable, install the latest graphics driver supplied for your computer or graphics card. If the problem continues even with acceleration disabled, graphics acceleration was probably not the root cause.
5. Check crash reports
If Firefox opens and then crashes, its built-in crash-report page can show whether the failures are recurring.

about:crashesin the address bar and press Enter. - For recent unsubmitted reports, click Submit.
- Note the submitted report ID. Submitted IDs begin with
bp-.
If Firefox crashes before it can open, press Windows key + R, enter the following path including the quotation marks, and click OK:

6. Match the startup error to the correct fix
Specific launch messages point to different problems. Do not apply a profile reset when the message identifies a damaged program installation.

For Error opening file for writing…, locate firefox.exe, right-click it, choose Run As Administrator…, select The following user:, choose an administrator account, enter its password, and click OK.
A blank launch can also be caused by particular security products or configurations. Mozilla documents examples involving outdated Comodo software or leftover IseGuard64.dll/IseGuard32.dll files, ZoneAlarm’s Virtual Browsing, and some AVG or Avast configurations. These are vendor-specific cases, not general fixes for every Firefox startup problem. Update or temporarily review the security product’s Firefox-related settings rather than deleting random Windows or Firefox files.
7. Check antivirus and firewall permissions
Antivirus, antispyware, and firewall software can prevent Firefox from opening websites or can contribute to crashes. If Firefox opens but pages fail, remove Firefox from the security product’s allowed or trusted-program list so the product can detect it again. Then review its firewall configuration and add Firefox again if required.
Use the security product’s own settings and documentation. Do not leave protection disabled permanently just to test Firefox, and do not download replacement DLL files from unofficial websites.

8. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime if a DLL is missing
A corrupt or incomplete Microsoft Visual C++ installation can leave Firefox without required runtime components, particularly VCRUNTIME140_1.dll. Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package from Microsoft, then restart Windows and try Firefox again.
9. Refresh Firefox
Refresh Firefox resets Firefox settings while preserving important personal information. It preserves bookmarks, browsing history, open tabs, windows, passwords, cookies, and web-form autofill information. It removes extensions and themes and resets Firefox preferences.

- Click the Menu button.
- Choose Help.
- Select More Troubleshooting Information.
- Click Refresh Firefox….
- Click Refresh Firefox in the confirmation window.
Firefox closes and refreshes itself. If Firefox cannot start normally, open Troubleshoot Mode and use the Refresh Firefox button there. This is a permanent action, so use it only after testing Troubleshoot Mode and extensions.
Refresh may not repair profile files that it preserves. If the issue remains, create a new profile rather than repeatedly reinstalling the application.
10. Test with a new Firefox profile
Firefox profile data is separate from the browser’s program files. A damaged profile can therefore survive an ordinary uninstall and reinstall. A new profile provides a clean test without immediately deleting the old one.
When Firefox is closed
- Close all Firefox windows.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
firefox.exe -P. - Click OK.
- In Choose User Profile, click Create Profile….
- Click Next, enter a profile name, and click Finish.
- Select the new profile and start Firefox.
-p and -ProfileManager are equivalent alternatives. If Firefox is installed in a nondefault location, use the complete quoted path, followed by -P:
"C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" -P
"C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe" -PIf the Profile Manager does not open, Firefox may still be running in the background. Close all Firefox instances or restart Windows, then try the command again.

When Firefox opens
Enter about:profiles in the address bar. The profile page lets you create a profile and includes controls such as Rename, Remove, Set as default profile, and Launch profile in new browser.
If the new profile fixes the problem, the original profile is likely damaged or contains a problematic setting or add-on. When removing the old profile during troubleshooting, choose Don’t Delete Files to preserve its folder. Delete Files permanently removes its bookmarks, settings, passwords, and other data.

Use this step for damaged program files or errors such as Failed to read the configuration file and the XULRunner version mismatch. A normal reinstall is not a profile reset.
Uninstall Firefox on Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Mozilla Firefox.
- Click its three-dot icon and choose Uninstall.
- In the Mozilla Firefox Uninstall window, click Next, then Uninstall, and finally Finish.
The uninstaller may offer Refresh Firefox…. Choosing Next bypasses that option and continues with uninstall.
If the uninstaller does not open, run the appropriate file:
C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxuninstallhelper.exe
C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxuninstallhelper.exeAfter uninstalling, manually delete the remaining program folder if it exists:

Install a fresh copy
Mozilla documents both its download server and the Microsoft Store as Windows installation sources.
- Mozilla installer: use another browser to download Firefox, click Get Firefox or Download Firefox, open the installer, approve User Account Control with Yes if prompted, and complete setup.
- Microsoft Store: open the Store from the Windows taskbar or Start menu, search for Firefox, select Mozilla Firefox, and click Get.
An administrator installation normally uses C:Program Files and is available to all Windows users. Without administrator access, Firefox installs for the current user under:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMozilla FirefoxBest order to try the fixes
- Close Firefox completely and restart Windows.
- Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode.
- If it works, disable extensions and test hardware acceleration.
- If it crashes, inspect
about:crashesor the submitted crash-report folder. - Check antivirus, firewall, graphics drivers, and the Visual C++ runtime where relevant.
- Refresh Firefox if the profile settings appear to be the problem.
- Create a new profile if Refresh does not help.
- Perform a clean uninstall and reinstall only when program files or the installation itself appear damaged.
FAQ
Does reinstalling Firefox delete bookmarks and passwords?
Normally, no. Firefox profile data is separate from the program files, and uninstalling the application normally leaves bookmarks, passwords, preferences, and other profile data in place. A clean profile removal is a separate, destructive step.
Is Firefox Safe Mode still available in Windows 11?
Mozilla’s current name is Troubleshoot Mode. “Safe Mode” is the older terminology. Hold Shift while starting Firefox, or use Menu → Help → Troubleshoot Mode… when Firefox is already open.

Disable all extensions under Menu → Add-ons and themes → Extensions, then re-enable them one at a time. Also test with hardware acceleration disabled. The problem is likely related to an extension, theme, acceleration, or another customization.
What if Firefox still crashes in Troubleshoot Mode?
The crash is not caused by the extensions, theme, or hardware acceleration disabled by that mode. Investigate graphics drivers, security software, injected third-party modules, malware, defective RAM, Firefox program files, and the profile.
How do I start Firefox’s Profile Manager on Windows 11?
Close Firefox, press Windows key + R, enter `firefox.exe -P`, and click OK. If Firefox is installed elsewhere, use its complete quoted executable path followed by `-P`.
Will Refresh Firefox remove my browsing data?
Refresh Firefox preserves bookmarks, history, open tabs and windows, passwords, cookies, and form autofill information. It removes extensions and themes and resets Firefox preferences.
The Bottom Line
Start with Troubleshoot Mode rather than reinstalling Firefox. If the browser works there, isolate extensions and hardware acceleration. If it does not, check crash reports, security software, drivers, runtime components, and the profile. Refresh Firefox or create a new profile before attempting a clean reinstall, and remember that uninstalling Firefox alone normally does not remove corrupted profile data.
