Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a mission objective will not advance, first check that you have met its in-game conditions; a stalled marker is not always a technical bug. Then retry the relevant step, refresh the area or game, and move on to updates, save recovery, or official support only as needed. The exact triggers and menu options vary by game and platform, so use the title’s official instructions for game-specific steps.
1. Check for a missed objective condition
Read the objective text and quest journal carefully, then check whether the game expects an action that is easy to miss. Some progression issues come from game mechanics rather than a technical fault, as HoYoverse’s support guidance notes.
- Check prerequisites: Another quest may need to be completed first. CD PROJEKT RED says a related quest can activate and block progress until you finish it. See The Witcher 3 support.
- Check the marker’s elevation: The objective may be on a different floor or platform. Bethesda’s DOOM Eternal support warns that a nearby marker can be above or below the player.
- Look for a tutorial prompt: Some tutorial sections pause progress until you perform the prompted action. Insomniac documents this for its games at Insomniac Support.
- Check character, time, or call triggers: In GTA V Story Mode, some missions depend on the active character, elapsed in-game time, or receiving a phone call. These are examples of title-specific conditions, not rules for every open-world game. See Rockstar Support.
- Confirm the NPC or enemy state: An encounter may require an NPC to reach a location or an enemy to return to an arena before the next step can trigger.
Do not assume a marker alone tells the whole story. Compare it with the objective wording, nearby prompts, and the game’s own quest instructions.
2. Retry the gameplay step and refresh the area
If it is safe and the game allows it, repeat the interaction or action that should have advanced the objective. Some encounters need time to settle into the expected state; Bethesda’s DOOM Eternal guidance, for example, says an escaped demon may need time to return to the arena.

#1 Best Overall
For an objective tied to a location or NPC, move away and return, or leave and re-enter the area. HoYoverse recommends teleporting away and back for applicable issues; The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) support includes leaving an area or instance, returning, or changing zones. In ESO, retrying solo may also help where phasing or group play is involved. These are game-specific options, not guaranteed fixes. See HoYoverse Help Center and ESO Support.
3. Restart the game or reload a checkpoint
Close the game completely, then relaunch it. If the game offers a return-to-character-select option, checkpoint restart, or interface reload, follow the relevant title’s support instructions and use the actual menu labels shown in your version.

A checkpoint restart can help when the current mission state is stuck. Santa Monica Studio recommends restarting from a checkpoint and, if that fails, trying the latest manual save for its progression guidance. Bethesda’s earlier-checkpoint advice applies to a specific DOOM Eternal arena problem, not every quest. See Santa Monica Studio Support and Bethesda Support.
4. Update the game or verify its files
Check for an available game update and install it, then fully close and relaunch the game. Santa Monica Studio notes that its game will not update while it remains open and recommends relaunching after an update is available. If the issue persists, verify the installation only through a method supported for your game and platform.

- On PC, file verification steps depend on the launcher. Use the official instructions for Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or whichever platform you use; do not assume one launcher’s path applies to another.
- Some games offer an in-game resource check instead. HoYoverse describes resource verification through Settings > Resources for applicable games.
Built-in verification is safer than manually changing game files. The official guidance cited here supports file or resource checks, not arbitrary data edits or unofficial console commands. See Santa Monica Studio Support and HoYoverse Help Center.
5. Consider an earlier save only after weighing the rollback
If a checkpoint restart does not work, look for a manual or backup save from before the objective stopped progressing. Preserve the current save first if the game allows it, and check the game’s official instructions before restoring anything.

- Includes the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine expansions, 16 DLC's which offer a massive 50 hours of additional storytelling as well as new features and new areas that expand the explorable world by over a third!
- Affords access to all additional content released so far, including weapons, armor, side quests, game modes and new GWENT cards!
- Features all technical and visual updates as well as a new user interface completely redesigned on the basis of feedback from members of the Witcher Community.
Loading an older save can remove progress made since that save was created. Insomniac describes backup saves as a workaround for certain situations and warns that side-content progress may be lost. Rockstar also notes that in some cases of corrupted GTA V Story Mode progression, an earlier save from before a title update may be needed; it says some corrupted saves cannot be fixed. Those examples do not establish that an earlier save will repair every game. See Insomniac Support and Rockstar Support.
6. Report a persistent block to official support
If the objective still will not advance, use the game’s official support or bug-report channel. Include enough detail for support staff to identify the trigger and reproduce the problem:

- Game title, platform, and—if relevant—the game version.
- Quest or mission name and the exact objective wording.
- The last action you took before progress stopped.
- Steps you have already tried and what happened after each one.
- A screenshot or short video showing the objective and its state.
- Save information or a save file, but only through the developer’s requested official channel.
- Whether you use mods or trainers, if applicable.
CD PROJEKT RED requests quest and save details and mod or trainer history; HoYoverse requests screenshot or video evidence; ESO provides in-game bug reporting and official report channels. Follow the exact submission options for your title and platform. See CD PROJEKT RED Support, HoYoverse Help Center, and ESO Support.

Start with actions that are easy to undo and unlikely to affect saved progress. Save rollback has the greatest potential cost; file checks and support escalation depend on your game’s official procedures.
| Action | Typical purpose | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Recheck the objective, journal, map height, tutorial, and prerequisites | Find a missed condition | Conditions vary by mission and game. See CD PROJEKT RED, Bethesda, Insomniac, and Rockstar. |
| Repeat the step; leave and return | Retry a trigger or refresh an area | Only applies when the game permits it; it is not a universal fix. See HoYoverse and ESO. |
| Restart or reload a checkpoint | Refresh the current progression state | Checkpoint behavior varies; follow title-specific support. See Santa Monica Studio and Bethesda. |
| Update or verify resources or files | Address an outdated or damaged installation | Menus and procedures vary by platform. See Santa Monica Studio and HoYoverse. |
| Load an earlier manual or backup save | Return to a state before the block | Can roll back progress; some save corruption may not be recoverable. See Insomniac and Rockstar. |
| File a support or bug report | Get game-specific investigation | Provide precise details and evidence. See CD PROJEKT RED, HoYoverse, and ESO. |
Game-specific instructions take priority
The examples above come from official support guidance for multiple titles, including HoYoverse games, ESO, The Witcher 3, God of War (2018), DOOM Eternal, GTA V Story Mode, and Marvel’s Spider-Man titles. Their mechanics and recovery options should not be treated as interchangeable. For instance, an EA forum discussion documents a Battlefield 6 version 1.0.1.0 example in which leaving the intended mission path could stop AI or objectives from functioning; that example is specific to that title and version. Current bugs, patches, menu labels, and support procedures can change, so check the official support page for your game and platform.
