A box, blank space, garbled letter, or jagged pixel edge can each have a different cause. First identify whether the character is absent, incorrect, mapped to the wrong glyph, or merely rendered poorly; then apply the fix for that specific failure. Changing fonts will not repair corrupted text, and changing encoding will not add a glyph that a font does not contain.

Identify what is actually failing

Unicode groups modern text display problems into three broad types: a font lacks support for a character, text is shaped incorrectly, or the characters themselves are incorrect or garbled. These are different problems, even if they look similar at first. Unicode’s “Display Problems?” guidance explains these distinctions.

  • A box or tofu symbol: The selected font may not contain the character, or the application may not be finding a suitable fallback.
  • Unexpected letters or symbols: The text may have been decoded using the wrong encoding, or the stored characters may not be what you intended.
  • A character that appears but looks wrong: Its character-to-glyph mapping, text shaping, or the application’s rendering may be responsible.
  • An apparently empty position: Some characters are intentionally invisible or display as blank space. Confirm the character’s identity and expected behavior before treating it as a font failure.

Start by copying the exact failing text and inspecting the character or code point in the application, if it provides character information. If the stored character is already wrong, a font change cannot correct it.

Check whether the retro font has the character

A font can cover basic Latin letters while omitting accented characters, punctuation, currency symbols, or entire writing systems. When a character is absent from the font, the application may show a missing-glyph box or try another font. Check the font’s character coverage for the exact character you need rather than judging coverage by how well it displays ordinary English text.

If the glyph is missing, choose a font with the required coverage or set up a fallback. A fallback can keep text readable while preserving the retro face wherever it has glyphs, but the substitute may look different in shape, weight, or pixel scale. Microsoft documents font fallback and recommends ending a CSS font stack with a generic family so text still has a display option when the named fonts are unavailable. See Microsoft’s font fallback guidance.

Use a deliberate fallback in a browser

Put the retro font first, followed by a compatible fallback and a generic family. For example:

font-family: "Retro Pixel", "Unicode-capable fallback", sans-serif;

Replace the example family names with fonts actually available to your users. Verify that the fallback contains the missing character and test the result in the browser and operating system you intend to support. The fallback helps with coverage; it does not make every character look as though it came from the retro font.

Fix garbled or substituted characters by checking encoding

If the text shows the wrong letters rather than a missing-glyph box, check how it was stored and how the application reads it. The text must be interpreted using the encoding in which it was saved, and web content should declare its encoding correctly. Unicode describes, for example, Russian text saved as Windows-1251 but read under a different encoding assumption; the result is incorrect characters, not a font-coverage problem. Consult Unicode’s display-problem guidance and verify the source encoding and its label before changing the font.

Inspect character-to-glyph mapping

A character can be present in a font file but still fail to select the intended glyph. The font’s character-to-glyph mapping, commonly called its cmap, associates character codes with glyphs. Apple describes this mapping in its TrueType reference for the cmap table. Microsoft’s OpenType recommendations describe platform and encoding conventions, including differences between Unicode and symbol fonts.

This check is especially relevant for older or symbol-encoded fonts. Before remapping characters or converting a font, confirm how its mapping is intended to work and whether the target application supports it. A font file’s existence alone does not establish that it behaves like an ordinary Unicode font.

Separate shaping problems from pixel rendering

If the correct character is present and mapped but looks clipped, misshapen, or poorly spaced, compare the same text in another application or renderer. Also test at the font’s intended pixel size: bitmap and pixel fonts may lose their intended appearance when scaled to sizes for which they were not designed.

Unicode treats incorrect shaping as distinct from missing font support. Microsoft describes text shaping and resolution-independent layout in its DirectWrite documentation. Applications and platforms can render the same font differently, so there is no single antialiasing switch that reliably fixes every retro font. Make changes in the application and operating system where the problem occurs, and compare the result rather than assuming one renderer setting will work everywhere.

Choose the remedy that fits the failure

What you see Check first Likely remedy Trade-off or limit
A box or missing-glyph symbol Whether the font contains the exact character and whether fallback is working Use a font with the needed coverage or configure a fallback Fallback characters may not match the retro font’s style or pixel scale
Wrong letters or symbols The actual stored character and the encoding used to read it Correct the text or make the encoding and its declaration agree A font change does not repair incorrectly decoded text
The wrong glyph for a character The font’s cmap and whether it is a Unicode or symbol font Use a compatible font or application; correct mapping only when appropriate Legacy mapping behavior can vary by platform and application
Correct character, poor shape or spacing Shaping, renderer, application, and intended font size Compare in the target app and another renderer; adjust only the relevant application or size settings Rendering is not necessarily pixel-identical across platforms
Blank position that may be intentional The character’s identity and expected display behavior Confirm whether it should be invisible, blank, or shown as a missing-glyph symbol Not every empty position signals a font defect

Check licensing before converting or embedding a font

Converting a font file does not remove restrictions on redistribution. Embedding and use remain subject to the font’s license. Review the applicable terms before converting, embedding, or sharing the file; Microsoft summarizes these constraints in its font FAQ.
