If Minecraft Dungeons matchmaking is not working because you are waiting for random players, nothing is broken: the game does not offer public matchmaking. Its online co-op is for playing with friends. If you already have a friend to join, check platform compatibility, account access, online-play eligibility, and multiplayer settings before troubleshooting the connection itself.
Does Minecraft Dungeons have public matchmaking?
No. Minecraft Dungeons has no public queue for finding random teammates. Mojang’s official FAQ describes online play as a way to play with friends, not a matchmaking service. Arrange a session with friends and use the game’s invitation or friend-joining flow; waiting for a random-player queue or changing network settings will not create one.
The game supports local couch co-op as well as online co-op. The launch FAQ describes up to four players in local or online co-op, while the current Minecraft Help multiplayer article lists two to four players online.
Can’t join a friend in Minecraft Dungeons? Check these requirements first
- Confirm the platform combination. Cross-platform multiplayer is supported across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows. Mojang announced the free cross-play update on November 17, 2020, in its cross-platform announcement. Make sure everyone is playing Minecraft Dungeons and can access the game’s online and cross-platform options.
- Check sign-in and multiplayer settings. The Minecraft Help multiplayer guide directs players to the official instructions for enabling multiplayer and cross-platform play. Each player should be signed into the intended account and have multiplayer and cross-platform access enabled where applicable. A Microsoft account may be required depending on platform, according to the Minecraft Dungeons account FAQ.
- Check platform online-play eligibility. Minecraft Help identifies Xbox Game Pass Core and Nintendo Switch Online as online multiplayer requirements on those consoles; general Minecraft multiplayer support also lists PlayStation Plus for PlayStation console play. Check the current platform provider’s terms for your region, account type, and console. Membership can satisfy an eligibility requirement, but it does not resolve a failed invitation or service outage by itself.
For child or family accounts, permissions vary by platform and account type. Review the account’s current multiplayer and cross-play permissions with the relevant platform provider rather than relying on a menu path that may not apply to your setup.

Minecraft Dungeons cross-platform play not working
Cross-platform play is a current feature, not a planned update: it became available in a free update announced on November 17, 2020. The launch-era FAQ’s statement that cross-play was not available at launch is historical and should not be treated as the current status. Current supported platforms listed by Minecraft Help are Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Windows PC, and Xbox.
If players on different systems cannot connect, verify that each can access online play, is signed into the expected account, and has multiplayer and cross-platform options enabled. Cloud saves are a separate feature; cross-save setup is not required to establish that a platform combination supports multiplayer.

Connection to host timed out: isolate the failure
A timeout does not, by itself, show that the host’s router is the cause. Official sources do not establish one universal Minecraft Dungeons fix involving router settings, DNS, port forwarding, security software, or network equipment. Try to identify where the failure occurs before changing anything:
- Does the problem affect one friend or every friend?
- Does the invitation arrive, and what happens when the player accepts it?
- Can the same players connect when they use the same platform, or does the problem occur only across platforms?
- Can each player use online multiplayer in another game?
- What platform is each person using, what exact on-screen message appears, and when does the failure happen?
Record those details, along with the game version if visible and each player’s account and cross-play status. Restarting the game or checking official service status can be reasonable general support steps, but neither is established in the cited sources as a Minecraft Dungeons-specific cure. Avoid treating a router change, DNS change, security setting, or hardware purchase as a proven remedy without evidence tied to the platform and error.

How to enable multiplayer in Minecraft Dungeons
Use the official Minecraft Dungeons multiplayer and cross-platform guide for the current game instructions. Then check the account and platform conditions for every person joining:
- Confirm each player is signed into the account they intend to use; a Microsoft account may be required depending on platform.
- Confirm multiplayer and cross-platform access are allowed in the game and account settings, where applicable.
- On consoles, verify that the account meets the platform’s current online multiplayer membership rules.
Exact account controls can differ, especially for child and family accounts, so use the relevant platform’s current guidance for account-specific settings.

When to escalate the problem
If the group has compatible platforms, valid online access, and permitted multiplayer settings but still cannot connect, contact official support with the recorded details. Include the platform for each player, exact error text, game version if shown, account type and sign-in state, cross-play status, and whether the issue affects one friend or everyone. These details help distinguish an invitation, account, platform eligibility, or connection problem without assuming a particular network fault.
