Start by identifying when the connection failed: while adding the device, or after it had already been working. Then check power, the device’s Wi-Fi requirements, and whether your controller and phone can communicate with it on the home network. For Google Home, also verify IPv6; guest networks and client isolation can block local communication. Restart the affected devices before resetting or removing the accessory.
First determine whether setup failed or a working device went offline
The right fix depends on when the problem began. A device that cannot be added may have a commissioning, compatibility, or initial network issue. A device that was already added but now cannot be controlled may instead have lost power or network access, or be unable to communicate with its controller.
- During setup: Note the exact app message. Check that the device is supported by the platform, powered on, and close enough to the router for setup if its manufacturer recommends that. Confirm the phone has the connectivity the platform requires.
- After setup: Check whether the device is powered and whether its manufacturer’s app can control it. If that app also cannot reach it, investigate the device’s power and network connection. If only one smart-home platform cannot control it, focus on the controller and local-network path.
- Several brands fail at once: Suspect a shared factor such as the router, home hub, VPN, or third-party security software rather than resetting every accessory.
Matter commissioning is the process of discovering and adding a device; it can use supported interfaces such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. Once a Wi-Fi accessory has been commissioned, a later outage is not necessarily a pairing problem. Also confirm that the accessory actually uses Wi-Fi: Matter can use Thread or Ethernet too, and Wi-Fi band advice does not apply to a Thread device.
Fix a Matter device that will not add
Check power, compatibility, and setup prerequisites
Make sure the accessory is powered and that the phone and controller meet the chosen platform’s requirements. Keep the phone near the accessory during setup if the device or platform instructions call for it. Turn on Bluetooth when required: Google Home lists Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 4.2 or later among its Matter setup prerequisites. Google Home also requires a Matter-enabled hub.

Update the phone’s operating system and the relevant smart-home app. Check the manufacturer’s app or instructions for accessory firmware updates and model-specific setup steps. Platform requirements and supported-device lists can change, so check the current instructions for the exact model and app.
Match the device to the Wi-Fi network it supports
Some Matter Wi-Fi accessories do not support 5 GHz. If Apple Home reports “network is incompatible,” check whether the accessory supports the band the phone or network is using and follow the manufacturer’s setup guidance. Amazon specifies that a Matter Wi-Fi device in Alexa must use the same 2.4 GHz network as its compatible Matter controller.

These are platform- and device-specific requirements, not a general rule that every Matter device needs a separate Wi-Fi name or that every household must split its bands. Before changing a router’s band settings, renaming a network, or creating a separate SSID, check the accessory’s requirements and the platform’s current guidance.
Respond to the exact setup message
- Apple Home: “Unable to add to home” — Check power, proximity, and the relevant home hub, then follow Apple’s and the manufacturer’s reset or setup instructions if needed.
- Apple Home: “network is incompatible” — Check the accessory’s supported Wi-Fi bands; some accessories are incompatible with 5 GHz.
- Amazon Alexa: “No new devices found” — Check the Alexa device list before trying again. Amazon notes that a device may have connected automatically through Frustration-Free Setup.
Check the home network when setup or control fails
Verify IPv6 for Google Home
Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly in Google Home. A setup may appear to succeed without it, then control or other functionality can fail later. Check the router’s documentation or ask your internet service provider if you are unsure whether IPv6 is enabled or available.

Check guest Wi-Fi and client isolation
A phone, controller, or accessory on a guest network may be separated from other local devices. Router features called AP isolation, client isolation, or similar can also prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi network from communicating with one another. Google identifies isolation as a potential barrier to smart-device communication.
Consult the router manual to identify the relevant setting and understand its security effect before changing it. Do not broadly disable security features just to test a connection; make only the change needed for trusted devices to communicate, following your router maker’s instructions.

Consider whether the problem is local
Google Home and Nest Help explains that Matter devices work locally over the existing home wireless network without needing to connect to the cloud over the internet. That means an internet outage alone does not necessarily explain why a local Matter accessory is unreachable. The phone, controller, and accessory still need a working local network path, and some app features may separately depend on internet service.

- Restart the accessory. Use its normal power control or the manufacturer’s instructions; avoid interrupting a firmware update.
- Restart the home hub or Matter controller. If the platform uses a separate hub, follow its restart instructions.
- Reopen the smart-home app. Check again for the device’s status and try control or setup once more.
- Restart the router or modem if the problem appears network-wide. Apple recommends this as part of troubleshooting when multiple accessories are affected.
- Check VPN and security software if several accessories fail together. Apple advises checking whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering.
Update phone and controller software, and check the manufacturer’s app for accessory firmware, before proceeding to removal or reset. If the device is a third-party Thread accessory rather than Wi-Fi, Apple’s guidance specifies disconnecting power for five minutes, reconnecting it, and then waiting ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. Those timings are for Thread accessories, not Wi-Fi devices.

Remove and re-add only if the simpler checks fail
If one accessory remains unreachable after the power, network, software, and restart checks, removal and re-commissioning may be appropriate. Apple advises removing an unresponsive accessory from Home, following the manufacturer’s reset instructions, and adding it again; some accessories must instead be removed through the manufacturer’s app. Amazon places reset after its earlier troubleshooting steps.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact reset procedure and any setup credentials you will need.
- Remove the accessory using the platform or manufacturer app specified for that model.
- Reset it as directed by the manufacturer, then add it again using the platform’s current Matter setup flow.
A reset can erase configuration and require setup information, so do not use it as the first response to a brief outage. If the device still will not add, retain the exact app error and contact the accessory maker or platform support with the model and the steps already tried.
