Start by identifying which version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask you’re playing: the original Nintendo 64 game, Majora’s Mask 3D on Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo 64 app on Switch, or a third-party emulator such as Project64. Controls, save behavior, and the right troubleshooting steps differ by platform. Use the matching section below rather than applying one edition’s instructions to another.
Fix control-stick problems on the original Nintendo 64
If the stick responds as though it is off-center, first stop touching it and let it return to center. Nintendo’s original game manual explains that a stick held at an angle when the console powers on can have that position registered as neutral, causing incorrect control response.
- Release the Control Stick and make sure it is centered.
- While playing, hold L and R, then press Start to reset the stick calibration.
- If you changed or reconnected the controller during play, reset the game or power-cycle the console, then test again. The manual specifies controller socket one.
Avoid opening the controller or putting liquid or objects into it as an initial fix. Nintendo describes the stick as a precision instrument and warns against introducing liquids or foreign objects.
Fix an N64 controller that misbehaves on Nintendo Switch
For the Nintendo 64 controller used with Switch, follow Nintendo’s controller troubleshooting guidance: make sure the console is updated, the controller has power and is paired, and stick calibration completes successfully.

- Move closer to the console and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Test the controller in another compatible Nintendo 64 Switch Online title. If the symptom occurs only in one game, check whether that game supports the controller.
- If the problem continues after these checks, follow Nintendo’s support guidance for service.
Nintendo says compatibility with games outside the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online libraries is not guaranteed. A controller that navigates the Switch menus may still be unsupported by a particular game. Nintendo’s separate support results also identify response or input-lag symptoms for the N64 controller, model HAC-043; that is not evidence that every lag or button problem has the same cause.
Fix Circle Pad Pro controls in Majora’s Mask 3D
If you use a Circle Pad Pro with the 3DS remake, first check that the accessory is enabled in the game. In Majora’s Mask 3D, open Options and enable Circle Pad Pro on the first page. The Nintendo 3DS manual also describes system Circle Pad calibration and a separate in-game Circle Pad Pro calibration procedure; use the one that matches your control setup.

The Circle Pad Pro enters standby after five minutes without activity. Press ZL or ZR to wake it if it stops responding after being idle.
Diagnose slowdown, graphics, or input problems in Project64
Project64 performance symptoms can depend on the emulator build, the game dump, operating system, drivers, and plugins. The Project64 support guide recommends updating Windows and drivers, trying the latest stable or nightly Project64 build, checking that the game dump is good, and testing other plugins. It lists separate plugin setups for accuracy and performance/general gaming; its performance configuration names GLideN64 in HLE for graphics, Parallel-RSP in HLE for RSP, Azimer’s audio v0.70 WIP 10 in HLE for audio, and Project64 input or N-Rage input depending on controller needs.

Those are Project64 recommendations, not a guaranteed fix for every Majora’s Mask slowdown, visual artifact, or input issue. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it affects the symptom. If you are using a ROM hack, test whether the same problem occurs in an unmodified game before blaming the emulator or the base game.
What to record before asking for help
- Project64 version and build, plus your Windows version.
- The game region/version and whether the game is modified.
- Graphics, RSP, audio, and input plugin names and settings.
- What happens, when it happens, and repeatable steps to reproduce it.
No single Project64 setting or hardware upgrade is established as a universal performance fix for Majora’s Mask. Specific build and symptom details are more useful than a general report that the game is slow.

Understand how saving works in each edition
Original Nintendo 64
The original manual describes using the Song of Time to return Link to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. The game’s three-day cycle lasts 72 in-game hours if Link does not prevent its end with the Song of Time. Nintendo says that if the game ends, play resumes from the last time saved using the Song of Time. This cycle reset is not the same as preserving every item or temporary state; consult the manual’s full saving section for what carries over.
Nintendo 3DS
In Majora’s Mask 3D, stand in front of an owl or quill statue and press A to save. Returning to the dawn of the first day does not save automatically, as Nintendo’s 3DS manual explicitly warns. Do not power off or reset the system, or remove the game or SD card, while saving; Nintendo warns that doing so can cause permanent data loss.

Project64
If a Project64 save disappears or fails to load, note the exact emulator build and check whether it is writing save files where expected. Back up existing saves before changing files or moving to another build. A Project64 issue report opened April 26, 2022, described Majora’s Mask (USA) saves failing to load in development build Dev-4.0.0-5787-2f1074a while the preceding Dev-4.0.0-5786-1975a99 reportedly worked. This is a specific historical report, not evidence that saves broadly fail in Project64 or in current versions.
Check the known Majora’s Mask 3D update fix
Nintendo released Majora’s Mask 3D Ver. 1.1 on February 27, 2015. Its update history lists fixes for an in-game “ERROR!****” message and inability to swing the sword after playing at Honey and Darling’s Shop, plus unspecified gameplay adjustments. If you encounter either named issue, check that the game reports Ver. 1.1 and install the update where available. Nintendo does not say that this update fixes unrelated control, performance, or save problems.
