Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix low FPS and stuttering in Steam games by identifying whether the problem is limited to one title, checking the game’s requirements, then testing background load, memory, storage activity, drivers, and graphics settings. There is no universal Steam setting that solves every case. The order below helps distinguish persistent low frame rates from brief hitches—and both from online lag.
First, identify what kind of problem you have
Low average FPS means the game is rendering frames slowly over time. Stuttering usually feels like brief pauses or uneven motion, even if the displayed FPS is otherwise acceptable. Online lag is different: a delayed response to other players or the server can occur even when local rendering is smooth.
Before changing settings, note whether the issue affects one game or several, whether it began after a game or driver update, and whether the slowdown is constant or occurs in short bursts. These observations are clues, not a standardized diagnostic test.
- One game only: Check that game’s requirements and settings first; the cause may be title-specific.
- Several games: Check shared factors such as background applications, available memory, drivers, or hardware capability.
- Brief pauses: Look for a relationship with memory or disk activity while the pause occurs.
- Delayed online response: Investigate network or server conditions separately from frame rate. Steam’s lag guidance treats lag as a network-latency issue.
Check whether your PC meets the game’s requirements
Open the game’s Steam Store page and compare its listed requirements with your actual PC hardware. Requirements are a starting point, not a promise of high FPS: Steam notes that later game updates may add features or visual detail that reduce performance on older hardware. Steam’s performance guidance also cautions that low or reduced FPS can have many causes that are difficult to diagnose without examining the machine.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your PC is below the game’s requirements, reducing resolution and demanding graphics settings may help, but it may not be enough. A hardware upgrade may be necessary; which component, if any, depends on the specific game and your system. Do not assume that a particular RAM or graphics-card upgrade is appropriate without checking compatibility and the game’s needs.
Reduce background load and check available memory
Close applications you do not need while gaming, including unnecessary startup apps, then test the game again. Background processes consume system resources, and low available memory can lead Windows to move data to disk, which may affect gameplay.

- Start the game and reproduce the slowdown.
- Open Windows Task Manager and inspect memory use while the game is running.
- Close nonessential applications, then check whether available memory or gameplay improves.
Steam Support gives indicative memory guidance in its hardware troubleshooting article: it describes 1,000 MB available as a target, 2,000 MB or more as safer, and about 800 MB as a level below which Windows will start writing data to disk to free memory. Treat these as Steam’s troubleshooting rules of thumb, not universal requirements for modern games.
Steam also notes that systems with 16 GB or more of memory can cache files to help with level loads and relaunches. That is not a guarantee of smooth FPS. Consider a compatible RAM upgrade only if the game requirements or observed memory pressure indicate that your system is short of memory.

Check for disk activity when the game hitches
Some games read or write data during play, and slow disk responses can coincide with pauses. To investigate, open Windows Resource Monitor, go to Disk, and inspect the Response Time column while reproducing a hitch. Look for long responses that occur at the same time as the stutter rather than assuming the drive is responsible.
Steam says response times above 10–20 ms may start causing performance problems in games. This is diagnostic guidance from Steam, not a universal cutoff or proof that storage is the cause. A nearly full drive or a drive that spins down may be worth checking, but the useful evidence is whether disk activity and slow responses line up with the symptom. Steam’s hardware article describes this check.

Update drivers, then adjust graphics settings one at a time
Steam recommends checking CPU, graphics, and audio drivers because outdated drivers may prevent hardware from working as intended. For graphics drivers, use the release intended for your specific GPU from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel, as appropriate. Steam’s driver guidance covers its recommended update step.
If driver updates do not resolve the issue, lower the resolution or reduce demanding in-game graphics options. Change one setting at a time and retest so you can tell which change matters. The best balance depends on the title and hardware. For the integrated-graphics situations covered in Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance, low shader detail and windowed mode may help. If random freezes are involved, Steam also advises restoring the video-card software to its factory-default settings rather than relying on custom driver overrides.

Use launch options only for supported Valve games
Steam launch commands are not generic FPS fixes. The documented rendering options apply to supported Valve Source or GoldSrc games; Steam says its listed launch options do not apply to most third-party games.
For a supported game, Steam documents -autoconfig as a way to restore detected video and performance settings for the current hardware. Follow the relevant instructions for the game and remove the option afterward if the documentation or the game’s behavior requires it. See Steam’s launch-options guidance and its Valve video troubleshooting page before trying engine-specific options.
Verify game files only if corruption is plausible
Steam’s file-verification instructions address missing content and crashes. Verification may be reasonable if you suspect damaged or missing files, but Steam does not present it as a general FPS optimization. Some local configuration files may normally fail verification. Follow Steam’s instructions for verifying game files when the symptoms point to an integrity problem.
When to contact support
If the steps above do not help, gather the game title, PC specifications, operating-system version, driver versions, and a short description of when the slowdown occurs. Note whether it happens in one game or several, and whether it tracks with memory or disk activity. Steam recommends contacting the third-party game’s support for configuration-specific problems; if its general performance guidance does not help, it also suggests consulting a local PC technician. Steam’s performance article explains that low FPS can have many possible causes.
