Start by checking whether the problem affects one app, the Fire TV menus, or other devices on your Wi-Fi. Then try the least disruptive fix that matches the symptom: clear an app’s cache, check for a system update, run network diagnostics, or restart the device. Save a factory reset for later.
First, narrow down what is affected
Notice whether only one app is freezing or crashing, whether the Fire TV menus themselves are slow or frozen, and whether phones or other devices on the same Wi-Fi are also having trouble. This comparison can point you toward an app, device, or network check, but it does not prove the root cause.
- One app has trouble: Start with that app’s cache and, if needed, its data.
- Menus or the whole Fire TV are slow or frozen: Check for a system update or restart the device.
- Videos buffer or several devices have connection trouble: Check the Fire TV network status and your router connection.
Fix a single app that crashes, freezes, or behaves unreliably
Amazon recommends clearing an app’s cache and data for intermittent app problems and low-storage messages. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose the affected app, and select Clear Cache. Test it again. If the issue continues, return to the app’s settings and select Clear Data.
Clearing data may reset the app’s local state or sign you out. Have your sign-in details ready before using that option. Amazon also says a Fire TV may automatically clear cache for apps that have not been used for more than 30 days when storage is low. Amazon’s app cache and data guidance explains the steps.

Check for a Fire TV system update
Menu labels vary by Fire TV interface. Look for either Settings > My Fire TV or Settings > Device & Software > About > Check for System Update, then follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. Amazon also recommends updating both Fire TV and the mobile device involved when troubleshooting casting. Amazon’s update guidance and casting troubleshooting cover these checks.

Stop videos from buffering or troubleshoot connection trouble
Use Fire TV’s network status or diagnostics before changing equipment. Open Settings > Network and choose the connected network to view its status. If you are on a connection error screen, choose Network Diagnostics. Amazon says the tool can help distinguish the Fire TV-to-router connection from the router-to-internet connection and offer recommendations. Some compatible devices also show speed tests or more detailed network information; those features are not available on every model. Learn about Fire TV network diagnostics.
- Restart Fire TV. Use the device’s restart option if it is responsive. If it is frozen, use the restart steps in the next section.
- Improve the Wi-Fi path. If possible, move the Fire TV and router closer together. Better placement and fewer obstacles may help when signal coverage is the issue.
- Restart the modem and router in order. Unplug both and wait one minute. Reconnect the modem first and allow about a minute for it to connect. Then reconnect the router and allow about a minute for it to connect.
- Check other devices. If several devices have gone offline, Amazon notes that a network outage may be involved. Check your internet provider’s service status if available.
Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance includes these steps for videos that buffer. If diagnostics and restarts do not help, follow the on-screen network recommendations and reconnect the Fire TV to Wi-Fi if prompted.

Restart a frozen Fire TV
If the device will not respond to its menus, press and hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds to force a restart. Alternatively, unplug the Fire TV’s power cord, wait 60 seconds, and reconnect it.
If the screen is frozen during startup or the device will not turn on, check that the HDMI connection and selected TV input are correct. Amazon also advises using the power cable and adapter that came with the Fire TV device. These checks are aimed at a frozen screen or startup fault, rather than ordinary video buffering. Consider wired networking or router changes only when they fit the problem
Extra equipment is not a general fix for an app-specific crash. Consider network changes when diagnostics or coverage checks suggest a connection problem that affects streaming.
- Ethernet: A wired connection may help if running a cable is practical and your particular Fire TV supports Ethernet. Some devices require an adapter. Verify compatibility for your exact model; Amazon’s guidance does not establish one universal adapter. See Fire TV setup and connection guidance.
- Router or mesh system: First consider whether the home’s size or layout creates weak coverage where the Fire TV is used. Amazon mentions mesh routers for larger homes, and Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher routers only for Fire TV devices that support Wi-Fi 6E. Neither is a necessary fix for every buffering problem. Use a factory reset only after less disruptive checks
Amazon places a factory reset after network diagnostics, restarting the device, resetting or reconnecting Wi-Fi, and restarting the router. Treat it as a later step: a reset returns the Fire TV to setup, so you will need to configure it again. Follow the reset instructions for your device model rather than assuming every model handles data the same way. Amazon’s network troubleshooting sequence lists reset after the earlier checks.
