Two different downloads can appear relevant on Switch 2, but their small-versus-large download sizes reflect different products, not a failed installation.

Check the product name and details from its HOME Menu icon or Nintendo eShop listing before troubleshooting. Why is KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 not downloading on Switch 2?
The release date has not arrived
Nintendo lists October 8, 2026 as the native Switch 2 edition’s release date. If you are trying to start a preorder download before then, the content may not yet be available to download or play. Nintendo UK says preorder content is not playable before release. Check the eShop listing for your region and try again when the listed date arrives; availability and purchase details are tied to the country setting on your Nintendo Account. Check the download prerequisites
Nintendo’s general eShop guidance says the console needs the latest system software, an internet connection, and enough free storage to complete a download. Confirm those basics before repeatedly cancelling and restarting. Nintendo UK’s listing gives the same baseline requirements: download information.
- On the HOME Menu, open System Settings and install any available system update.
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet, then reopen the eShop listing or download queue.
- Check available storage before retrying the download.
- Verify that the purchase or preorder is associated with the Nintendo Account you are using on the console.
- Allow the download to finish before launching the game.
How much space does KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 need?
Plan for roughly 27 GB for the native Switch 2 edition, but treat that as an estimate rather than a guaranteed final install size. Nintendo of America lists an estimated 26.9 GB; Nintendo Australia lists 26.8 GB of required space. The 0.1 GB difference is consistent with regional estimates, and Nintendo warns that actual installation space may be more or less than the listed amount. The regional figures are shown on Nintendo of America’s listing and Nintendo Australia’s eShop page.
If there is not enough free space, remove unused software or data, or add compatible expansion storage. Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards; check Nintendo’s microSD Express guidance before buying a card. The smaller 77 MB listing belongs to the separate Cloud Version, not the native Switch 2 download.

Before deleting and redownloading an installed digital game, check that the console is authorized to play it. Nintendo’s Switch 2 digital-game guidance recommends confirming that the purchasing account is selected and the game’s virtual game card is loaded. If you use an online license instead, make sure the feature is enabled and the console has internet access when launching. Nintendo says play can be interrupted after an extended period offline. - Select the Nintendo Account that purchased the game.
- Check the virtual game card section and load the game’s card onto the console if needed.

Check the Cloud Version’s official listing if the icon on your HOME Menu is the small launcher-style download.
What to do if the problem continues
If the native release is available in your region and the checks above do not resolve the problem, note the exact on-screen message or error code. Contact Nintendo Support or SQUARE ENIX Support with that detail. As of October 7, 2026, Nintendo’s native listing is still for a future release, so no particular game-specific error remedy or patch can be confirmed.
