If sound comes through only one side, first check the iPhone’s left-right audio balance. Then follow the steps for your type of headphones: AirPods need charge and earbud checks, while wired or other headphones need connection and cable checks. Testing another pair can help identify whether the problem is with the headphones or the iPhone.
Start with the iPhone’s audio balance
A balance setting shifted fully to the left or right can make one side seem silent. On iPhone, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual and center the Balance slider. The exact wording can vary with iOS version. Apple’s iOS 26 guide also explains stereo balance and Mono Audio settings.
Mono Audio sends the same content to both sides rather than preserving left-right stereo separation. It may help as a listening workaround, but it will not repair a faulty earbud, cable, or port.
If one AirPod is silent or much quieter
Check charging, then test the affected AirPod by itself
- Make sure the charging case has charge. Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds.
- Check on your iPhone or iPad that each AirPod is charging.
- Put the affected AirPod in your ear, leave the other AirPod in the case, and close the lid. Play audio to test it.
- If it works on its own, put both AirPods back in the case for another 30 seconds and test them together again.
These are Apple Support’s recommended checks for a left or right AirPod that is not working.

Clean an AirPod that is quieter than the other
Inspect the speaker and microphone mesh for debris. Clean the AirPods using Apple’s directions rather than probing the mesh with a sharp object or applying liquid. Apple’s AirPods Support hub links to cleaning and audio help.
Reset it if the AirPod still does not work
If an AirPod remains silent after the charging and isolation checks, Apple says to reset the AirPods. Follow the reset instructions for your AirPods model in Apple’s support guidance. If you have just replaced one AirPod, set up the replacement AirPod as directed there.

If wired or other headphones work in only one ear
Check the physical connection and visible condition
- Inspect the iPhone’s headphone port, if your model has one, for debris.
- Check the cable, connector, remote, and earbuds for visible damage or debris.
- Reconnect the headphones firmly. A phone case can sometimes prevent the connector from seating fully.
- Adjust the volume and check whether the one-sided sound persists.
Apple advises updating iOS or iPadOS and restarting the device if needed. For headphone openings, Apple’s documented cleaning method is to brush gently with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush. See Apple’s headphone troubleshooting steps.
Test with another pair to locate the fault
Connect a second pair of headphones to the iPhone. If the second pair works normally, the original headphones are the likely source; contact their manufacturer about repair or replacement. If the second pair also plays through only one side, contact Apple Support about the iPhone. The second pair is a diagnostic test, not a reason to assume you need to buy new headphones.

What the checks tell you

These checks can narrow down the cause, but they do not establish whether a device is covered by warranty or what a repair will cost. For service or an individual replacement AirPod, confirm the model and availability with Apple for your region.
